To say that Eleanore was having a bad day would be the understatement of the century. From the moment she had opened her eyes that morning, she had been...irate. The day had been no different from any other in terms of scheduling and workload but for the simple fact that today was the day she was to sign her life away. At least on a legal level. After today she would be tied to that boy for the next year, for the rest of her life really if they followed the Government's plan and brought a child into the world. Never before had she been so tempted to skip work all together and hide out in her apartment. She doubted that he would attempt to come and find her.
Her obvious irritation kept the majority of her coworkers far away from her, all of them afraid of her enough when she was not in a mood to be completely terrified now that she was. Not everyone had managed to avoid her wrath though and she had already angered a fellow partner enough that he took an early lunch and made a temp lock herself in a bathroom sobbing. Now she was sitting in her office, the lacquered black door emblazoned with her name closed tightly and her eyes staring blankly out of the tinted glass wall behind her. An elbow was placed on the armrest of her office chair, her chin cradled in her hand. Eleanore had always prided herself on being the type of person who faced her problems head on, the type of person who refused to let them get the best of her and beat them soundly into submission but today she wanted nothing more than to hide away.
It was one thing that the government was taking such a decision away from her, stealing her right to choose her own husband and decide rather or not she even wanted a family (which she did not), but what made her so very angry was how unsure it all made her. She did not know where she stood, all of her carefully made plans had been torn to pieces and scattered in the wind and without them she didn't know what to do with herself. After she had turned eighteen she had made the decision to never let anyone rule her life again, not after her mother had controlled nearly ever aspect of it from her distant perch. Now it felt like it was all happening again. She hated it. She hated it so much and there was not a thing she could do to stop any of this.
And then that man! Miles. He frustrated her, he got under her skin and made her angry enough that she wanted to break something. No one spoke to her the way he did, it just wasn't done because she was not a woman anyone opposed. Everyone knew it and yet he continued to goad her and he did it so easily that it made her feel like she was in even less control. She hated him for it.
With every second the clock ticked closer to 12 o'clock Eleanore felt the walls starting to close in. With a huff of frustration, she pushed herself out of the black, faux-leather chair and stood in front of the large window. She glared at her reflection, trying to intimidate the woman in front of her into being stronger than this. She would not let him see even a speck of weakness from her. She smoothed down her already perfect hair, making sure that not a strand of hair had escaped the tight bun at the back of her head. She ignored the shaking of her hands and she brushed imaginary lint from the deep black fabric of her tailored suit, folding the plum colored scarf around her neck so that it laid perfectly. God, how she just wanted this all to end.
