UNIVERSAL IDOL S2: Week 7, Ep1
This week, the show began with a voiceover:

"For the last six weeks, we've watched our performers have to fend for themselves, and prove that they're not only talented, but also survivors. This week... they learn to combine taking guidance with knowing what's best for them as we enter Mentors Week."

Then, photos of each performer and mentor began to be shown on the screen.

"This week, we'll see Olive Penderghast mentored by Bad Reputation's Ginnifer Callaway. Alex Manes-Guerin mentored by Eternal Embrace's Kaitlin Crowe. Queen Barb mentored by Scream Queens' Skylar Bale. And Spencer Quill mentored by A Woman Scorned's Morgan Raleigh."

(Starting this week, the remaining eliminations will be voted on by you! Between Tuesday, Dec. 1st at 11pm EST and Thursday, Dec. 3rd at 11pm, each player in the game will be allowed to send ONE email to Dan, stating which performer they would choose to keep in the competition. At 11pm on Dec. 3rd, whoever has the least amount of votes will be eliminated!)

PERFORMANCE: Queen Barb

2020-12-01 01:48 am UTC (link)
The promo clip began with a shot of Barb and Skylar sitting in one of the recording studios at Full Moon HQ, Barb, dressed in snugly-fitting ripped jeans and a Heart "Bad Animals" tee, was all smiles, sitting there with her knees pulled in close to her chest.

The pink-and-blonde haired girl fidgeted a little in her seat, clearly full of energy.  "I'm not sure what I was expecting with this mentoring thing, but honestly? I loved it. Ms. Bale has so much knowledge about this stuff...  in one day she taught me things I didn't even realize I needed to learn."

Dressed in a sleek black dress that offset her bright blue hair even more, Skylar smiled as well. "I was so glad to get Barb to work with. She's someone that I think will go far in the music industry. Tonight, I wanted her to show a slightly different side of herself. It's a side that I think everyone's going to be thrilled to see."

"This is gonna be fun but a little terrifying, too." Barb admitted with a giggle. "I just hope it comes off as authentic, and doesn't disappoint anyone. Especially my new sensei here."

Skylar looked at Barbara and patted her hand. "With me by your side, you're definitely going to be authentic," Skylar insisted. "I wouldn't have you do anything that I thought you couldn't do." She looked back at the camera. "Like be terrible. Impossible for you," she teased.

Barb beamed a little at the compliments, before turning to the camera and giving the metal horn with her right hand. "For everyone pulling for me... thank you. I'm gonna kick ass again tonight, and together, we're going all... the... way."

The video cut out to the live feed, the camera zooming in on Queen Barb, standing in what was designed to look like an Old West setting. She wore skintight leather pants, black high-heeled boots, and a leather jacket over a white corset, her multicolored hair mostly covered by a  wide-brimmed cowboy hat.

She stood in place, slowly moving her hips in time with the slow, rhythmic bass and drum beat. This week, she had no guitar with her, and had both hands on the microphone stand as her body moved with the music.

"Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rodgers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky"

The strong, seductive tone to her voice was aided by the way she moved, lightly slapping her thigh with one hand as she used the other to slowly twirl the mic stand.

"The boy could sing, knew how to move ev'rything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please"

Barb knew how to rock. And thanks to some pointers from Paige and a few others, she knew how to be sexy. But sultry? Seductive? Those were still foreign to her. But Skylar had done a hell of a job teaching her, because this was coming off like something she'd had in her for her entire life. The slow, deliberate movements. The way she timed her hip movements just right to be in synch with the beat of the song. The bedroom eyes she flashed at the crowd. She wasn't sure how authentic she'd seem... but she was acting sultry AF right now, thank you.

"Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of ev'ry school girl
"Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for"

She took her hat off, twirling it into the crowd as she ran a hand through her pink-and-blonde hair, before quickly slipping out of the leather jacket and flinging it backstage.

"Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet and that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please"

Until a week or two ago, Barb would've had no idea what sultry or sexy even meant, but now she was epitomizing them perfectly, using her wispy figure to her advantage as she moved in snakelike fashion to the music, before slowly lowering to a crouching position as she continued singing.

"Ev'ry word of ev'ry song that he sang was for you
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon
What could you do?"

"Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet in that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please"

She could feel her confidence soaring. She truly felt like she was going to win this whole thing now. If she didn't? She could tell Skylar was ready to do anything it took to sign her regardless. That wasn't the point though. Barb wanted the reputation that would come with basically being the most popular singer in the universe.

"Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet in that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please"

"If you please
If you please
If you please"

Jutting her hip out as the song hit it's final beat, Barb dipped her head back, soaking in the applause and screaming from the crowd. No matter the world she was in... the stage? Was her home.

"Ok, admission time. I kinda always thought that was one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard in my life." Rachelle said with a nod, before chuckling and shaking her head. "Until now. You just crushed the original, babe. I shouldn't even be surprised... I've known Skylar for over a decade, and if there's anyone who knows the ins and outs of being sultry, it's her. It didn't feel forced or fake at all, and I applaud the entire performance."

"Hey! A song I actually know," Kyle let out a chuckle. "What? It doesn't happen very often on this show for me." Sure, he was a hip-hop guy, but he had heard some songs outside of the genre. "I think that you already had all of the tools to make the performance what it was. It was just a matter of someone telling you how to use what you've got. You're ready for the big stage. I'm sure we'll be seeing you at the finale."

PERFORMANCE - ALEX MANES GUERIN
[info]threequarters
2020-12-02 12:12 am UTC (link)
The video opened on Mouse and Alex, sitting in what appeared to be Mouse's living room. The redhead wore a baggy pink sweatshirt over a pair of little black shorts, and sat curled up in a ball, with a big smile on her face.

"As soon as I heard Alex here sing on Week 1, I told Ben that if he was still here come Mentors Week, I called dibs. I love his voice and his presence, and I was even more pleased to find out what a genuinely good guy he is." She giggled, reaching over to playfully punch him in the shoulder.

It was hard for Alex to believe that he was there still. He was surprised that Nevaeh was voted off before him. Although he felt everyone that was there now were so talented. He didn't know how he would pick and he had decided to go for Idol on a whim.

Now he was sitting next to Mouse on a couch seven weeks into the show. He didn't show it but he was floored. Just completely floored that he was performing again, working with Mouse.

He laughed as she punched him in the shoulder. "When I first heard about mentor week I wasn't sure who I'd be paired with," he said with a quick look to Mouse. "I hadn't really listened to much music outside artists that were familiar from home." Which he didn't think was uncommon. There was a comfort in music. "Not only did we work really well together but we had fun listening to some local music."

For him that was a bigger lesson, "Even at the end of the week I don't think I've learned everything I'm going to from her." He enjoyed working with her and from the music he's started listening to he thought she was very talented.

"Well, whether Alex goes all the way or not, I plan to help him with anything he needs moving forward." Mouse said with a big grin. "We have this... natural sibling kinda chemistry that's so rare. No matter what, I think we both made a new friend."

PERFORMANCE - ALEX MANES GUERIN
[info]threequarters
2020-12-02 12:13 am UTC (link)
It was then the video cut to Alex walking onto the stage. He was surprised the no matter how many times he was on stage he felt a tinge of nerves. He took a deep breath before he made it to center stage.

This time he wasn't wearing a similar style to his previous performances. No jeans, no boots. This time he was in a plain, fitted white t-shirt with black slacks and shoes.

He was standing center stage with a wireless microphone in his hand. There was a brief few seconds of music before he started to sing.

Coming out of my cage
and I've been doing just fine
Gotta be down
because I want it all

His voice was soft to go with the sound on the piano. He slowly started to take steps forward.

It started out with a kiss
how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss,
but she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
let me go (yeah)

He stopped two feet from the edge as the beat changed. A flash of a smile as a few in the audience actually yelled his name. A feeling that started to make his heart race. He didn't think he'd ever have that happening.

I just can't look, it's killing me
and taking control

Jealousy,
turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
choking on your alibis

As the music changed to a faster tempo he started to move the length of the stage. Keeping a two feet distance from the edge of the stand as he did. Keeping his attention on the audience, not only wanting to give attention to those lucky enough to be right down center stage. His body swayed naturally to the music as he side stepped.

But it's just the price I pay,
destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I'm Mr. Brightside

It just can't look,
it's killing me
and taking control

He bent over as he sang, grasping onto the fitted t-shirt. Unintentionally showing off some skin. The audience had been loud when he stepped out but it roared for a moment then. He released the fabric as he held the last note of the verse.

I never

Raising the mic to slightly above his head as his head lifted when holding the note.

But it's just the price I pay,
destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'cause I'm Mr. Brightside

At the end was when he noticed that his shirt had lifted and audibly nervous laugh escaped his lips he fixed it.

"Alex, Alex, Alex." Rachelle laughed, kicking her feet up on the table and knocking back a bit of her drink. "It feels redundant even complimenting you at this point, because it's common knowledge that I think you're the absolute balls out there week in and week out."

Chelle took a few seconds to think, before continuing.

"Here's the thing. I fucking loathe The Killers. I do. You know how some people violently hate Nickelback? They're my Nickelback. So admittedly, I had a harder time connecting to this one as much as I did your other performances. BUT! I did still enjoy the hell out of it. You can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes at this point."

Mere couldn't stop herself from snorting when Chelle admitted how much she hated The Killers. Chelle getting annoyed was always kinda funny to her, OK? "At this rate, you'll be doing love scenes in the movies in no time," Kyle smirked as he added to what Meredith had just said. "Though I've done some, and I don't really recommend it. So take that as you like." He shrugged, "but onto the song, I'm not at all familiar with it. So that helps me focus on just you, and helps me to not compare it to the original. So based on your vocals alone, I say that it was great. I thought that you had a very pure tone, and you've really come a long way when it comes to performing, man. I'm really proud of you."

Mentor Interview: Olive Penderghast
[info]fancymyth
2020-12-02 12:41 am UTC (link)
After finding out that Ginny was going to be her mentor and getting her contact information, she gave directions to the warehouse and let her know when she'd be available. She still worked at a little coffee shop with absolutely no intentions of ever signing, even after her talk with Rachelle. She was just set in her ways like that.

When Ginny was coming over, she had a camera ready while she was working on one of her new mixes. She knew that she had put on her weakest performance to date the week before, and she knew that she would need to really up her game going into her next performance, she just wasn't sure what she was going to do.

Ginny was actually really excited to work with Olive. Everyone kind of assumed (between the similarities in style and the fact that her lead guitarist was dating her) that she'd end up working with Queen Barb, but to Ginny, this was far more interesting, because they weren't the same.

The pale, busty vocalist knocked on the door, wearing tight black jeans, black high heeled boots, and a leather jacket over a white Joan Jett tee.

When she heard the knock, Olive got up excitedly and ran over to the door and opened it. "Hi!" she squealed, taking Ginny's hand. "Come, come. Let me show you my studio."

Ginny had to smile. The girl's mood was infectious. "Of course!" She said, happily letting the redhead lead the way. "I'm excited for this. I think we're gonna have some fun here."

Olive nodded with a grin, "this place is awesome. I'm so glad I found it." She sat down in her chair, offering the other one to Ginny.

With a sweet smile, Ginny nodded and took a seat. "Kinda reminds me of the place I got back home when we were putting our first band together."

She motioned to the computer, "all of my stuff is on here. I've made all of the backing tracks that aren't just regular instruments for my songs."

"I love how much you're already doing for your career. This is really, really impressive, Olive." Ginny told her, eyes wide with surprise.

"The way that things ended for me on The Masked Singer really lit a fire under me," she shrugged.

"I can see that. I think that's one of the things that's drawing people to you. They can feel how passionate you are about this." She nodded, crossing her legs. "And I have an idea for something that would really blow people away."

Olive nodded with a smile, listening to Ginny with great interest. "I'm willing to do just about anything."

"I'm not sure if you're overly familiar with Bad Reputation's album or not... but we have a song on there that I think would sound very unique with your voice," Ginny told her, looking pretty excited about this. She'd enjoyed her experience doing this last season, and felt a real kinship to her protege this season.

"Well, I was already aware of your music, but I didn't start to go out of my way to really listen to any of it until recently," Olive admitted with a nod. "You have some songs that I have wanted to work with."

"Your bestie's girlfriend and I wrote this one together... I think the pitch you have would make it sound really different but cool." Ginny said, getting out her phone and bringing up a short clip of 'I Miss The Misery'.

Olive listened carefully, nodding. "Yeah, I think that you're right about that."

"I think I'm more nervous about this week than you are." Ginny laughed, shaking her head. "I'm so scared of giving you advice that gets you voted off or something."

Re: Mentor Interview: Olive Penderghast
[info]fancymyth
2020-12-02 12:42 am UTC (link)

"It can't be worse than what I did to myself last week," Olive shrugged, overly critical of herself.

"I thought you did great, to be honest," Ginny told her, shrugging. "I've actually been really impressed with all of you this season. I haven't heard one performance yet that I found disappointing."

"I do like to keep things a little on the spontaneous side," Olive shrugged. "Never the same thing twice."

"Then how's this sound? I'll order us the best dinner I can think of, we can eat and get to know each other better, then when we're done? Team up and kick this song's ass." Ginny said, nibbling her lip in excitement. She felt, deep inside, like this might be the eventual natural progression of her career: she really loved taking young talent under her wing.

Olive nodded, "that sounds perfect. I have a feeling we'll be spending a lot of time together in the future anyway."

The package cut to the girls backstage, sitting in director’s style chair as they discussed things after Olive was (mostly) happy with her arrangement.

"I don't throw compliments like this around too often... but I think the girl sitting next to me here is going to be an absolute megastar." Ginny Callaway said with a proud smile, sitting next to Olive like a proud mama bear. The jet black leather jacket and jeans she wore combined with her black hair to make her paleness even more pronounced. "That said, I was psyched at getting the chance to work with her this week, and see what makes her tick."

"Which is more of a complicated process than one may assume," Olive chuckled. "I'm never satisfied, so I'm always changing things."

"She's not kidding, either." Ginny laughed, widening her eyes. "We changed the basic arrangement four times before finally deciding to just tweak the tuning a little to match her range better."

"And I think that I'm happy with it that way," Olive laughed. "I mean, it does feel right."

"Keep your eyes on this one, folks," Ginny added, jerking a thumb at Olive with a knowing smirk. "You heard it here first."

Performance: Olive Penderghast
[info]fancymyth
2020-12-02 12:43 am UTC (link)
Olive walked out onto the stage in a fishnet bodysuit with a lime green bra underneath it, a leather jacket to somewhat cover that, along with tattered denim shorts and black high-heeled boots. Her makeup and accessories only added to her “ginger version of Ginny Caloway” look. She walked over to where the microphone was waiting for her with a grin, placing one hand on top of it, as she ran the other through her hair.

“Ohhh, I miss the misery!” Olive belted out in a near scream before the music started.

Before the verse started, she vocalized a bit, getting ready to get into the song.

“I've been a mess since you stayed
I've been a wreck since you changed
Don't let me get in your way,” she closed her eyes, looking down for a moment.
“I miss the lies and the pain
The fights that keep us awake-ake-ake
I'm tellin’ you!” she tilted the mic stand to the side during the brief vocal pause, getting ready to bring more into the first chorus.

“I miss the bad things
The way you hate me
I miss the screaming
The way that you blame me!
Miss the phone calls
When it's your fault
I miss the late nights
Don't miss you at all!
I like that kick in the face
And the things you do to me!
I love the way that it hurts!
I don't miss you, I miss the misery!” she thrust her fist in the air with a grin.

“I've tried but I just can't take it
I'd rather fight than just fake it (cause I like it rough),” she looked over to Victor and winked.
“You know that I've had enough
I dare you to call my bluff
Can't take too much of a good thing
I'm tellin’ you!” she pulled the mic out of the stand, starting to walk to the edge of the stage.

“I miss the bad things
The way you hate me
I miss the screaming
The way that you blame me!
Miss the phone calls
When it's your fault
I miss the late nights
Don't miss you at all!
I like that kick in the face
And the things you do to me!
I love the way that it hurts!
I don't miss you, I miss the misery!” she crouched down on the edge of the stage, using her free hand to keep her balance.

“Just know that I'll make you hurt
(I miss the lies and the pain what you did to me)
When you tell me you'll make it worse
(I'd rather fight all night than watch the TV)
I hate that feelin’ inside
You tell me how hard you'll try
But when we're at our worst
I miss the misery,” she casually hopped off of the stage, walking along the front row of the audience.

“I miss the bad things
The way you hate me
I miss the screaming
The way that you blame me,” she made her way to the judges’ table, taking Rachelle’s hand to step up on top of it.

“I miss the rough sex
Leaves me a mess
I miss the feeling of pains in my chest!
Miss the phone calls
When it's your fault
I miss the late nights
Don't miss you at all!” she got off of the judges’ table and made her way back to the stage.
“I like that kick in the face
And the things you do to me!
I love the way that it hurts!
I don't miss you, I miss the misery!” she got back to where she left the mic stand grinned.

“I don't miss you, I miss the misery!” she vocalized as the music faded out. Once the music faded out, she wiped the sweat off of her brow, panting excitedly.

"Hey, Gin! Good job not making me wanna punch you in the titties this year." Rachelle said with a cheesy grin, giving the singer a big thumbs-up. "Seriously. Kudos on that shit."

She turned, to look at Olive.

"I'm still trying to figure out your endgame here, babe. You're just stupidly talented, and clearly you're inventive as hell. But I also know you hate the idea of being shackled creatively, and not being 100% in charge of everything you do musically. I'm seriously dying to find out what your ultimate goal is here. Now... I'm a little torn on this one. As usual, your voice was bad-ass, and the performance overall was great. You're completely at home with your confidence and it shows SO much. But while I respect trying to tackle a song Tits McGee over here did originally, I feel like you might've been better served doing one of her more reserved ones. You sounded great, but the parts where she'd let that gravelly roar out felt... a tiny bit empty. Best way to word it? Not my favorite of your performances, but still better than pretty much anything out there right now."

Mere pursed her lips in thought for a moment before continuing. "You're not Ginny. I don't want you to be Ginny, though. "I think that Ginny did a good job with this one. Again it's a song and artist that I am not all familiar with, so I'm looking at this performance with a fresh perspective," Kyle nodded. "Which I why I believe I am here. It's like Mere said, all three of you are extremely familiar with Bad Reputation's original version of this song and here I am, hearing it for the very first time. And honestly?" he looked to the ladies on either side of him before looking up at Olive, "I loved it. Olive, you know who you are. You know your sound and what you want to do with it. Performance: Spencer Quill
[info]justyourtype

Spencer walked out onto the stage after her video package ended in a pair of jeans and Converse sneakers with an oversized sweater. So she still looked pretty, but she didn't have that oversexed jailbait look from previous weeks. She sat on a stool next to someone on an acoustic guitar and turned the microphone toward herself.

"Everybody loves the things you do
From the way you talk to the way you move
Everybody here is watching you
'Cause you feel like home
You're like a dream come true," she didn't make a move to get up and in fact, she even hit notes lower than she ever had before.

"But if by chance you're here alone
Can I have a moment before I go?
'Cause I've been by myself all night long
Hoping you're someone I used to know," she smiled, taking a deep breath before going into the chorus.

"You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young," she looked down a moment, tapping her foot a bit, getting ready to pick things up a bit for the chorus.

"Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song," even in the more powerful notes, she barely moved, only using her hands for expression.

"I was so scared to face my fears
Nobody told me that you'd be here
And I swear you moved overseas
That's what you said, when you left me," despite never really experiencing heartbreak, she could feel those words and a single tear trailed down her cheek.

"You still look like a movie
You still sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young," she closed her eyes, getting ready to bring the next part out, making sure that it was big.

"Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song," she raised up a bit on the stool, getting ready to bring it all home.

"When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young," she let the music die out a bit, looking down for a moment before continuing.

"It's hard to admit that
Everything just takes me back
To when you were there
To when you were there
And a part of me keeps holding on
Just in case it hasn't gone
I guess I still care
Do you still care?" she bit her lip, the lyrics hitting her harder than she realized.

"It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young," she swallowed hard, composing herself before going into the last run of the song.

When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young

"Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
Oh I'm so mad I'm getting old
It makes me reckless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young," she was actually proud of herself as she finished. She had officially shown the other side of the more mature side to herself and even managed to find a little vulnerability, as well.

"Alright. So... hear me out, because this is gonna be a little more detailed than my critiques usually get."

Rachelle took a deep breath, downed the rest of her drink... sigh... then chucked the empty glass haphazardly backstage.

"You need to understand how much that song, and ALL of Morgan's songs, really, mean to me. Some people know this, some don't - Morgan is one of "The Wives" that I talk about all the time. I love that woman with a sincerity and loyalty that most people could never even begin to understand. And... my younger, semi-stupid ass inadvertently inspired some of her songs."

"So... you have to understand that I'm far more protective and in love with her songs more than I would be with the average artist. Which makes it hard for me to critique this without being all 'oh, Morgan sounded better'. Because honestly, if you came out here and had a voice ten times better than Morgan's, to me? Hers would still be better. But this impressed me."

"You held your own vocally, which for me to say is a huge compliment. Also, the part that shocked me... you felt it. It wasn't a flat performance: you were feeling those lyrics, which makes all the difference. I've liked you from the beginning. I've had doubts, and I've had fun, and everything in between. But this? Girl... win or lose, you just made a believer out of me."

Kayla scrunched her nose cutely at Rachelle. "You big softie. I knew you had a heart in there somewhere," she teased. "This is obviously a song from back home for me too. And I'd agree with Rachelle on this, you really sung your heart out with it and it showed. Well done."

"Yeah, Chelle likes to pretend that she's a big badass who can chew people up and spit them out when she's in the mood, but she's an adorable pillow of softness when she wants to be, too." That probably made sense to someone out there. "You did an amazing job with this song, since it's so obvious that you were able to feel the emotions going on behind it. I'm sincerely relieved you were able to handle it, though! Else Chelle would have torn you a new asshole and no one wants to see that."

"Thank you, Spencer," he laughed along with a handful of audience members. "It's no surprise here that I'm, again not at all familiar with this song. So I definitely don't have the same problem that Rachelle here does with it. Morgan may have gone through a handful of songs before landing on this one and I'm sure Spencer here probably sounded just as beautiful on each of them. But even if Morgan wasn't 100% sure of it before, a home run was hit with this one. What really won it for you was when you let the entire galaxy that you felt it. We all know that you've been having fun with all of those jazzy versions in previous weeks, but this time... you actually showed some vulnerability and a glance into what could easily be in your future."
