"Hey, thanks for having me over," Ellie said as soon as she entered Kat's home. Being on Galador, she had more good days than bad, but the bad days? She decided that she never wanted to be alone on the bad days. Her thoughts took her to a dark place. She was dressed in cargo's, a long-sleeve shirt with a tee over it that had 'small but mighty' printed across the chest. She held her hand over the bite scar on her forearm as, despite it not being visible, she was still very self-conscious and aware of it. "Seriously, I promise I don't cry all the time."
"Oh shush, you." Kat said, hopping to her feet and making grabby hands at the girl. "Kat-cuddles are all ready, so cooooome and get 'em!" She looked at her friend, for probably the hundredth time wondering if she would EVER realize how amazing she was.
Ellie smiled weakly and went for the hug. Back home she'd learned to keep people at arms length, but she was naturally a very affectionate person. "So, tell me things. Take my mind off of things. How've you been? Build anything crazy lately?"
"Heh. Right now... I'm working on probably the craziest thing I've ever done. But to explain that, I should proooobably tell you something that literally NOBODY else but my mom and dad know." She knew she could get in a LOT of trouble if Ellie repeated this to anyone... but she trusted her not to say anything. Besides, at the end of the day? There was pretty much nothing Kat WOULDN'T tell her.
Ellie was good at keeping a secret. She gave Kat a puzzled little frown and found a seat. "Okay, so... I am both curious and concerned. Should I be concerned?" Her eyes widened. "Don't tell me. You made a killer death robot."
"No no no. Nothing like that." She took a deep breath, nibbling her lip. "Nothing professionally done, just... me and my computer equipment.... but... I kinda started writing an album. You know what show they're doing? The Masked Singer? I'm kinda on it. And had to sign a confidentiality form."
Ellie's eyebrows shot up. She tucked her hands underneath her legs and shifted anxiously. "Shit dude, that's impressive! I mean, I knew that you liked music and all I just never... I never even thought." Shit, how could she not have known that that was something Kat wanted to do? "Do you have anything finished? Can I hear it?"
"Just some vocals and keyboard. It's probably shitty." Kat laughed, shaking her head. "I just signed up for the show cos it sounded like a blast. But the response to my first performance was really positive." She said sheepishly. "I feel stupid even doing this on my own, you know?"
"Well, I mean. I play guitar. I suck at it, but I could always help some and you wouldn't be alone anymore," Ellie offered. She didn't think she had much to offer other people, but when she thought she could help in some way she always dove in head first. It was one of her more endearing traits.
"Here..." Kat said, grabbing her phone and pulling up the clip of her performing. "Don't laugh. Please god don't laugh..."
Ellie watched the performance quietly. It was certainly... explicit. Still, that was not something she was going to say out loud. Once the clip ended, she said: "Wow. You're a--you're a really good singer."
"You really liked it?" Kat asked, blushing. She really didn't think she had a lick of talent vocally.. she just wanted to have fun. "It was SUCH a rush."
"You did look like you were having fun." Among other things. Ellie cleared her throat at the thought and looked away briefly. "It's important to do things that make you happy, I think."
"SoBo's gonna FLIP when she realizes it's me. She has no idea." Kat snickered deviously, "But yeah... I found this cool, gothy kinda rock style playing around with some synth sites... and started experimenting. Once I get a little more done, I'd really like you to hear it."
"Of course, dude. I'd love to." Ellie's music was more for her than anyone else. It took her to a different place. Still, music was different for everyone. "You should be proud of yourself. You saw what you wanted and went out and did it. Not many people can say that."
"I... don't do that as often as you'd think." Kat said, almost more to herself. No... if she did that? Maybe her head and heart wouldn't be as screwed up as they are. "But anyway... yeah. This isn't anything I wanna do professionally or anything. I just really enjoy it."
Ellie nodded. "Yeah, I get that." She crossed her legs underneath her and drummed her hands across her thighs. She was the type to fidget. At least these days she wasn't in the sprinter's start position so often. No need to run as often in a place like this. "You gotta hold on to the things that make you happy."
"Maybe that's why I hug you so often." Kat laughed, winking at her. "Maybe subconsciously I'm trying to hold onto what makes me happy."
"Maybe," Ellie agreed with a lopsided smile. "Maybe that's why your hugs are so epic."
"I love ya, El." Kat told her, giving another hug for good measure. "I hope that girl you're seeing understands what a flarkin' gem she has."
Ellie sighed happily into the hug. She didn't have that many friends on this planet, but... well, it was hard to measure up to Kat anyway. "Love you too," she murmured. "And yeah. I mean. She'd have to be blind not to appreciate this tiny bundle of awesomeness."
"She really would." Kat said, the smile on her face saying everything her words weren't: she really thought Ellie was one of the most amazing people she'd ever met. "We definitely gotta hang more. I know we both got lives now outside of each other, but I miss you!"
Some song lyrics came to mind... mostly because she'd been learning to play it, but still. "Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall. All you've got to do is call." She didn't go as far as to sing the lyrics, but Ellie hoped that the sentiment was there, at least.
"Ohgawwwwd." Kat murmured, eyes wide. "Stoppit. Right now." She said, locking eyes with Ellie. "You are NOT allowed to be so perfect. It's seriously not fair."
"Can't help being this awesome," Ellie replied, eyes locked on Kat's. What exactly was going on here? She blinked to banish the thought. She was probably overthinking it. "Seriously. Thanks for this."
"I was gonna thank YOU, actually." Kat laughed, that smile just beaming happiness right now. "Just... like that old TV show said: thank you for being a friend. I hate being all uber-mushy, but I really feel like that."
Ellie chuckled. She'd never been one to be overly sentimental either... but that was more due to the fact that she was afraid that whenever she formed an attachment to someone, they'd leave her. Y'know. By dying. But on Galador? She'd felt safer than she ever had in her entire life. "Y'know. I could count all the people in my life that I trust on one hand? And you're one of 'em."
"...and that's why I'm gonna let go right now." Kat chuckled, a sad tone to her voice as she released the other girl and backed off a little. "Because I love that you trust me... and I felt kinda ready to do something that would've ruined that. And possibly a lot more."
A puzzled frown crossed Ellie's face... but then it was as if a lightbulb lit up over her head. Ooooh. That's what was going on. She blushed and hopped up out of her seat, drumming her hands on the side of her thighs. "Yeah, I'd better." She scratched her thumbnail over the scar on her right eyebrow and looked at Kat for a moment. "Okay. Yeah." She walked a few steps over to the door. "We'll talk later?"
"Hey... at least I didn't do something stupid, right?" Kat asked nervously, terrified that she'd just fucked up their friendship. "El? I didn't... I didn't mess anything up, did I?"
"You didn't mess anything up," Ellie promised, crossing an 'x' over her heart. If anything, it made her realize that there was the potential for more than friendship there, but they were both also happily taken. They would have to discuss boundaries next time. "All that mushy stuff is still there," she assured her before leaving. She'd arrived with one thing on her mind and ended up leaving with something else on her mind entirely.
