LAS VEGAS -- Cory Blanchard has no friends.
Sure, he likes to sit on the floor and play with colorful building blocks. And yes, the six-year-old enjoys the occasional romp down the hallway in a bright red-and-yellow Power Wheels buggy. But the other children – and potential foster parents – have steered clear.
“We’re at a loss, really,” Regina Clarke, Cory’s case worker at Child Protective Services, said. “There’s a lot of red tape as far as Cory’s concerned, seemingly more so than usual. Probably has something to do with his mother.”
Cory’s mother is Samantha Blanchard, the Las Vegas homicide detective who on Sept. 10, 2011 was arrested for the murder of Gerald Watkins. Watkins was Cory’s adoptive father, and sources believed he was in town to return Cory to his mother.
But when authorities discovered Watkins’ body stuffed in the trunk of Blanchard’s car with four bullets lodged in his stomach, a detective’s career was thrown away and Cory’s life changed in the blink of an eye.
