It was rare indeed that Merlin ever properly courted a woman. He was never in a village long enough to form lasting attachments, and he much preferred the more casual relationships that came along with such a lifestyle. He was always respectful, and a part of him fell in love with virtually everyone he met - something about everyone was worthwhile and fascinating, and Merlin had a particular talent finding it.
But this was not courting, and he was far too respectful of Astoria's situation to even so much as think of her in such a way. Well, no - he didn't have that much restraint. She was a beautiful, kind girl who deserved far better than the hand she had been dealt in this strange place. He was, however, masterful at hiding any inappropriate feelings he might have had, so it made little difference. All he wanted was to show her an enjoyable evening, whatever that might be.
He had never heard of Beau Mangerie until she had mentioned it, but now that he knew it was where she wanted to go, he had prepared. He wore his best suit and tie, and he had foregone traditional flowers for a book full of pictures of beautiful places he had never been. Perhaps she had visited those sandy shores and white-capped peaks, but either way, he hoped it was something she would enjoy more than flowers.
He stood on her porch and knocked, adjusting his suit jacket and wearing his usual boyish smile.
