Who: Adele Nott and Arion Carrow
Where: "plaza thing" and then their cottage
When: monday late afternoon
What: Helping Adele home after a vision
Warnings: unlikely

Adele had managed to stagger into a little nook where she could vomit in peace, leaning weakly against the wall. She didn't want to sit, she wanted to prove she could stand, but it was sapping her strength, and she found herself struggling to hold her toga in place as she slid down the wall to sit, managing to avoid the sick. Part of it was already stained with blood where she was trying to staunch the flow from her nose. At least her little nook was relatively dark and quiet.

Arion had been walking around the competition training area when his journal went off. Competitions were over, but he wanted to get in a workout before the awards ceremony.

It only took him about two minutes at top speed to get to the plaza that served their block. "Adele!" he called, scanning the area for her. He knew she would try to find some place out of the way, so it didn't take him long to find her.

"Adele," he said, falling down beside her and lifting her chin to look at him. "Let me see." Pulling off his cloak thing, he never bothered to learn the name of it, Arion wiped at her face, and placed his hand on the back of her head. "Sit forward," he said. "I'll pick you up and take you inside."

Adele nodded a little, weakly, and sat forward. She assumed he was going to pick her up once he could get an arm around her. How many times had he done so in the past? "I'm okay," she said softly, despite all indications to the contrary. "I just have to rest and I'll be fine."

Arion slid one arm behind Adele's back and another under her knees, picking her up like she weighed nothing. He had a lot of practice picking her up like this, and she really didn't weigh that much at all.

A few moments later they were in their cottage and he was setting her down on the bed. "Tell me what you saw," he said, going for a clean toga he could help her into. "Was it bad?"

Adele put her hands over her face and let herself fall to the side, against the pillows. Her nose was still bleeding, and there was blood smeared on her face, but it was slowing a lot. "Not bad, I don't think. There's a cat somewhere in the city having kittens. Someone will claim one, but I don't know if they were Taken or...native. Whatever they are." She curled her knees up to her chest, trying to block out all light and sound. Her head was pounding, and being carried hadn't really helped.

"That doesn't sound bad at all," he said, taking his cloak and holding it to her face. "Bleed on this, not the bed," he said with a grin. Gently, he touched her hair, then moved to slip her toga off her shoulder. "Let me get you changed," he said.

He always hated seeing her like this, especially now that he knew that with every vision she inched closer and closer to death. He just wished there had been some way of knowing before it had happened. Yes, she'd always said she was going to die young, but without a when or a how, that didn't really mean much to him.

"Should I get Dr. Upsilon?" he asked. "Or will it go away on its own you think?"

"It's Captain Epsilon now," she reminded, keeping her voice soft so as not to hurt her own head. She pressed the cloak to her nose, moving to let him unwind the toga from her and closing her eyes. "I just need to rest. Just let me rest awhile, I'll be okay." For now. Arion had filled in most of the holes in what she knew -- she knew that these visions were killing her. She'd have expected herself to be angry, to rage at the futility of everything, but she'd just accepted it calmly. There was a kind of peace in it, really.

"I know that." Arion said, continuing to get her undressed. "But Dr. Upsilon runs the hospital, silly girl."

"Oh." She'd forgotten about that. "Yes." She was feeling pretty weak and faint, she considered herself lucky she was verbal at all.

Arion pulled her dirty toga off and tossed it to the floor, then reached for the clean one he'd found. Slowly, he eased her into it, dressing her like one would a fragile doll.

"Let me check your nose," he said then, pulling the cloak from her face to check. "I think you'll be fine," he said. "I've seen worse."

"I've had worse," she agreed. "Overall this wasn't too bad, comparatively. I didn't pass out or start talking gibberish. My nose didn't bleed that much." That seemed an odd thing to say, with the amount of blood still on her face even though the active bleeding had stopped. She reflected briefly that she'd still thrown up and had a horrible migraine, and that she was still an inch closer to death. What was her life that this counted as a good one?

"I always like it when you don't talk gibberish," Arion said, giving her a gentle grin. He didn't want to show her how he was really feeling. He knew that every vision led her closer and closer to the end, and all those feelings came rushing back on him. Her death, the funeral, the aftermath. He needed to get out.

Taking her hand, he brought it to his lips and kissed it. "I'll be right back," he said. "I'm going to get some water, then I'll clean your face up, okay?"

Adele nodded. "Okay," she said softly, closing her eyes again and tugging the blanket up a bit. She needed to rest, to sleep.

Giving her hand a squeeze, Arion left the room, and their cottage. He went around back and stood there for a few moments before leaning against the outer wall and collapsing to the ground. She was going to die. He knew the date, he knew the time, and he knew there was nothing he could do about it. It wasn't fair.

He leaned his forehead on his knee and let himself cry. He hadn't cried in ages. He hadn't cared about anything enough to cry since Adele's funeral. But here she was. Young and beautiful, and dying all over again.

But he had to stay strong. He couldn't let her know how weak he truly was. Yes, she was going to die, but they still had each other here, and he was so grateful for that. Maybe one of the scientists knew a way to help her, to prevent her from dying back in their world...

"Pull it together," he told himself, standing and pushing off the wall. She needed him today, and he was going to be there for her. So he went back inside and got a small bowl of water. Heading back to their bed, he found her asleep. She would have looked perfect had it not been for the blood drying on her face.

Gently, he grabbed a clean corner of his cloak and dipped it in the water, running it softly over her skin to clean her up.
