Who: Theodore Nott15-thg & Arion Carrow1-can
What: meeting alternate world... family, of a sort.
When: Thursday
Where: in the village
Warnings: TBD

Logically, Theodore had not yet figured out how he was supposed to feel about Arion Carrow. So far as he knew, the man did not even exist in his world and was therefore an unknown. He obviously cared for Theodore's alternate mother very much, but Theodore was not biologically his son; did he consider the alternate world Theodore to be his son anyway? Theodore was not sure how he would react to the man behaving as his father. It would be strange, at the very least, since he could already tell that Arion was very different than his father at home. He was not incredibly experienced with different types of parents and parenting styles. It seemed a purely emotional territory, and therefore one that Theodore was likely to have trouble navigating.

But he was willing enough to try, especially since that seemed to be somewhat the purpose of this place, and the experiments going on here. His brand of logic was not helping him very much at the moment, with all of this Christmas stuff, and with his new scientist in general, but he was determined to persist and handle all of it to the best of his ability. The perfectionist in him certainly wasn't going to let the matter go.

He arrived early at the store Arion had suggested, because "about twenty minutes" was not a precise time, and he preferred to wait rather than to be late. With ten minutes to go before the twenty minute deadline passed, he looked around to get his bearings in the town again, at the merrily twinkling lights and the snow and the brightly colored displays.

Arion was miserable. Well, not really. Honestly, Arion was happier than he had been in a decade. He had Adele back, and though things between them weren't exactly normal, he had seen a lot more of her room lately than he had seen of his. But when he put on the "festive" Christmas sweater he'd found in his closet, his mood completely turned around. Arion rarely wore sweaters, and certainly never sweaters with pictures of naughty reindeer right on he chest. But Adele had gotten a kick out of it, so he left it on, but tried to cover it up with a jacket he also found.

He was also nervous to meet Theodore face-to-face. He hadn't really had any contact with his world's Theo since Adele's funeral, though he had always been fond of the little boy. This situation was just odd in every respect. Theodore wasn't his son, and never would be. But he was important to Adele and Arion would do anything to make her happy. And he needed to make some decisions about what to buy Adele, so it seemed a good time to kill two birds with one stone.

Shaking out his dreadlocks, he stuck his hands in his pockets and made his way to the candy store. He was a few minutes early, and found Theodore waiting for him. "Theodore," he said, stepping near him and holding his hand out. "Good to meet you face-to-face."

Whatever Theodore had expected, this man was not it. He was tall, and muscular, and looked nothing like anyone in District 2; everything about him was foreign to Theodore's eyes. He hadn't even reached the conclusion that this was Arion Carrow; instead he was performing risk analyses in his head, imagining how a confrontation between him and this man might play out. He had taken on boys larger than him in the arena, but not fully grown men; the man's approach unnerved him, but his instincts were not immediately swayed towards flight. He could hold his own, especially since this appeared to be a peaceful arena, the way all of them had been so far-- certainly by comparison to the arena he'd come from.

It still took him completely by surprise when the man addressed him, which was when he made the connection that this was the person he was meeting. He blinked, but that was the only indication that he was even the slightest bit startled; that and the moment's hesitation before he held out his hand to accept the handshake. "Arion," he said, hoping that his pronunciation of the man's name was correct. "Hello."

Arion nodded and put his hand back in his pocket, trying to keep them warm and give himself something to do at the same time. They'd said hello... now what? He had no idea.

"So I suppose we'll just take it shop by shop then," he said, gesturing to the row of shops before them, each one more decorated than the last. "And you can tell me a bit about yourself. I've read through that pamphlet you put through to my journal, so I've got a vague idea of your world, but that's all. Seems like hell."

"Alright," Theodore agreed. Since they were heading for nothing in particular, this seemed a perfectly reasonable suggestion. At least, he surmised from the suggestion that Arion did not quite know where he wanted to go, but perhaps he should not make such an assumption. "Do you have any ideas about what you're looking for?"

If he did, Theodore could offer a more logical suggestion, although he supposed efficiency in their shopping was not the point. It might even be the opposite of the point, since in fact the goal of the outing was not to actually buy anything. It was to find something to buy later, and to get to know each other.

Which meant that Theodore was expecting the request to talk about himself, but he still had not figured out how to tell his story to people here. He'd told it to his mother, but that was different. His mother was accustomed to the spectre of death in the near future; she gracefully accepted the idea of her own demise. That was true even in an alternate universe. Mulling over ways to begin this conversation, he said, "My world is very different from yours. And most of the others as well."

"Seems that way," Arion said with a nod. "Kids killing each other and calling it Games. No offense, but it seems rather barbaric to me. I mean, I know my world's not perfect, but we don't make our children kill each other for sport."

He could tell that it was going to take work to get Theodore to really warm up to him and open up, but Arion liked a challenge, even though he was a bit awkward in this situation as well. It was important that he and Theodore get to know each other.

He shrugged then. "As for a gift for Addie, I don't really know. In my timeline, when she was still alive, I would get her chocolates, some jewelry, and usually something small that meant something special just to the two of us. But it's been so long, and I'm not the same Arion she left in her timeline. Maybe I should just stick with one gift this time, while we're still trying to understand our situation."

"I don't find that offensive," Theodore said. "The barbarism is the point." He reached up and pulled his hat down farther over his ears to keep them warm when he felt a bite of the chill. "Most people in my world do not consider it a sport. Except for the people from the capitol, who have never had to worry about their friends or their children being selected for the games."

His tone was calm and even, despite the subject. He had been able to discuss the Games in a cool and logical manner for years, long before experiencing them himself, and if he had been traumatized by the experience... well, he would probably have to let himself believe that he was no longer in the arena before he discovered what the aftermath was like.

It struck him as Arion spoke that this man's situation with his mother was not unlike the one that Pansy found herself in with him. Did that make him capable of giving advice as to what someone who had died might want from someone that they'd left behind? Probably not, because it wasn't the same situation at all, except that there was death involved; Theodore probably understood 'their situation' even less than he did the one between himself and Pansy. "I would say chocolates are usually safe, regardless of the situation."

"Just seems bloody wrong," Arion said. He didn't think he would ever truly understand all the other worlds, but Theodore's seemed especially awful, and made him glad that things hadn't gotten quite that bad at home.

He sighed and scratched his head, looking through the shop window at the display of chocolate boxes. "I don't know," he said. "They're a great stand-by gift, but after ten years, i want her to have something more special. More meaningful. Let's head down a bit and see what the other shops have to offer."

"Anything about yourself you think I should know?" he asked then. "Or do you want to turn the tables on me now?"

"Yes," Theodore said. "You don't even have to watch the games to be disturbed by it. That's why they're so effective."

Children killing each other was universally awful, but it seemed that the meaning of certain gifts did not translate quite so well. Chocolate was a precious luxury that many people in the districts could not afford, so hearing it described as a 'stand-by gift' made very little sense. But Theodore had already gathered that other-world concerns were somewhat opposite his own; for example, many females from other worlds were worried about gaining too much weight rather than about feeding their children. Theodore had grown up in relative luxury, being a victor's son, but he was still all too familiar with the idea of resources being limited. He still understood poverty, especially from seeing the toll it took on his patients.

"I am a healer," he said, turning his attention to the question after processing this train of thought. "Like my father."

"Well that's something," Arion said. "Healers are always needed, no matter the world." The boy seemed to have a good hold on things, making something of himself. At least that's what Arion thought. He would know more the more he got to know Theodore, but so far, Arion was impressed.

"I was an Auror in my world while your mother was alive," he said then. "But when she died things went down for me. Spent a long time not really doing much of anything. But now I have a few clients for occasional bodyguarding, and I work the door at a few different clubs at night."

He chuckled deeply. "Not the most glamorous work, but it has it's own air of excitement."

"It's very rare for them to have money for supplies," Theodore said. "And for professional training or technology. But my father was a victor, so he had more than most." And he had been corrupt, but since Theodore's father was considered a dark wizard in other worlds, he wasn't sure if that needed to be specified. "What is an Auror?"

It was an interesting word, but he had never heard it before. Not surprising; there were many things about other worlds that were foreign to him, and that had never been more apparent to him than in this Christmas world. This actually reminded him even more strongly of the Capitol in his world than the one they'd just been in, with all the lights and bright colors and costumes.

"What sort of clients?" he asked. "Politicians?" Those were the only types of people he could think of who would need bodyguards. "What sort of clubs?"

"It's like law enforcement for wizards," Arion told him. "I helped keep the peace, made arrests when needed, that sort of thing." Truthfully, Arion never really understood why he became an Auror. It wasn't like he disliked the job, but it just didn't seem to fit for him. But it had paid the bills.

But when Adele had died, Arion didn't care about the bills, or anything else. It was only after his mother got him back on his feet and forced him to find a job doing something that he stumbled upon bodyguarding and bouncing.

"I have guarded politicians before," he said. "But it varies. I work for a security company and they contact me when I'm needed. I've done politicians, actresses, businessmen, musicians, people like that. And when I'm not doing that I work at a couple of night clubs depending on the night. They're dance clubs, where people go to drink and dance and meet people. That job is a bit more interesting. I've had to break up plenty of fights. Then about once a month I enter into a streetlight or two. Brings in a little extra money."

"Like a Peacekeeper," Theodore said, with a slight frown. It meant something very different to him, much like the chocolates. He had never had a problem with the Peacekeepers personally, because he did not generally break the rules, but even he knew that their job was not as humane and harmonious as it sounded. "Did you to the answer to the President? Or is it a Minister, in your world?"

He had seen the word Minister used in worlds that were different from his, but had not heard either one in association with the world his mother and Arion were from. "What is the President or Minister like?"

These were questions he should have asked before, rather than assuming things were similar. He had been very curious when he'd first arrived, but ended up abandoning his attempts to discover more about other worlds. The current circumstances had reignited his curiosity, however.

"We have a Minister," Arion said. "But no, the Aurors don't answer directly to him. They're a subdivision of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Aurors answer to the Head Auror, who answers to the Department head, who then answers to the Minister. Chain of command and all that."

Arion shrugged then, not really knowing how to describe the Minister. Having distanced himself from the entire wizarding world after Adele's death, Ministry wise, at least, the only information he got was from his parents and hearing things on the street. "Well we just got a new Minister," he said. "He was appointed just a few days before I was taken. The old Minister, Fudge, was a bit of a ponce, apparently. He cared too much for appearances and actively ignored when Voldemort returned. When his return was made public at the end of last month, he was forced to resign. They've just appointed Rufus Scrimgeour to the position from being Head Auror. As far as I can tell, everyone is pleased with the selection. We're at war, so I suppose they think having an Auror as a leader with end it quickly."

Not quite like Peacekeepers, then. At least, that wasn't how it sounded, but Theodore knew that the perspective of them was very different in the Capitol. Different if you were a Peacekeeper, if you believed in your job to keep the Districts under control. It was difficult to tell if there were any such circumstances when he wasn't talking to one of the people who would be truly affected by them.

"My father is on Voldemort's side," he said. He had been told that much from discussions with people in colour world. Riddle was Voldemort and his father was one of Voldemort's 'servants'; they were both dark wizards. His mind tried to fit the new information about Arion in with his previous knowledge. "But you were law enforcement for the Ministry that is fighting against them. Does that mean you're on the other side?"

"Yes, your father is," Arion said with a curt not. He didn't really like talking about Adele's husband. He had accepted their relationship once Theo was born and didn't stand in Arion's way, but Arion had never liked him. When he tried to prevent Arion from going to the funeral, he really lost it.

He sighed then and scratched his head. "It's a bit hard to explain my side. I'm pureblood. My family, going back for many generations, we're all wizards. In my world, there are a lot of purebloods who believe they are better than other wizards and that non-purebloods are dirty and don't deserve to have magic. That's the sort of people I was raise by. My mother and father weren't as bad, but my father's parents and his brother were very set in those values. My cousins are on Voldemort's side and have been for years, but I was too young to really be involved. Then after your mother died I sort of fell out of contact with everything in the wizarding world. Nothing really mattered anymore, least of all blood status."

He paused then, distracted by a necklace in a shop window. "But if you're asking," he said then. "I'm not on a side. But if I were, it wouldn't be Voldemort's."

Theodore listened, finding the explanation actually rather simple to follow, although that was likely because the idea of blood purity had been explained to him. On a personal level he still did not understand why it really mattered, since money was the determining factor in magical ability back home, not blood, but he understood the basic theory of prejudice and that different worlds had different concerns.

"My mother was a muggle," he said. "I don't think the version of my father that you knew would have married her. Blood status doesn't make any difference in my world, though." He stopped to look at the necklace that Arion was examining, as well. "There is no Voldemort in my world. I know the man who becomes him in yours, though. He was my father's mentor in the games."

"I don't know how much Adele has told you about how our world worked, but purebloods often arranged marriages amongst each other to keep bloodlines pure and the money where they thing it should be. That's why she got married. My father wanted to arrange something for me as well, but my mother knew how I felt about her, so she convinced him to let the matter drop. If I had been a year older, Adele and I would have gotten married, but her parents weren't going to let her stay unmarried for an entire year out of school. That wasn't the way things were done."

Thinking about what might have been if Adele's parents had let her wait, or if he had been older, was painful for Arion, and he had to stop for a moment. He stood in front of the shop window, staring at the jewelry and kicking the wall lightly with his boot. "I remember the first war. Voldemort... even being raised the way I was raised, I can't agree with what he stands for. I never met him during the first war, but my cousins did and they told me about it. They worship him. I think it's mental, actually."

"She told me," Theodore said, nodding. She had explained that their marriage had been arranged; her explanation had been slightly different, but it fit with the explanation that Arion gave. Arranged marriages were not a foreign concept to him, although for them to be based on blood made sense considering that was an important factor in their world. "And I have heard that Voldemort was a dark wizard who ruled with fear and killed a large number of people. I believe Healy is the equivalent in my world, only more successful than Voldemort was in yours."

"Seems like it," Arion nodded, then pointed towards the door of the jewelry shop. "Let's go in here," he said. "I want to see if they've got a necklace I think she'll like."

He moved to the door and held it open for Theodore to enter, then went to the first display case. It was full of diamond bracelets, all of them very gorgeous. "So what about you?" he asked as he examined each bracelet. "I mean, I know a bit about your world, but what else can you tell me? About you."

Theodore considered the question as he followed Arion inside. What was there to tell about himself, besides his interest in medicine and his family? There was his games, but he didn't think talking about those would make very good conversation. In his world, he had died even younger than his mother had. That was not exactly in the spirit of Christmas.

"I believe I was a Slytherin in your world," he said, after a moment. "But there is no Hogwarts in mine."

"I was a Slytherin as well," Arion said, moving to the next case containing rings and earrings. He stated at the rings for a moment, thinking about the ring he had wanted to buy Adele so badly, but was never allowed to.

He was silent for a minute before moving to the next case, this one full of sparkling necklaces. "But lately I haven't really been the best example of house traits."

"Ambition and cunning," Theodore recited from memory, looking around at all the jewels. There was more jewelry here than he'd ever seen in one place before, and it dazzled him a little. He kept his hands in his pockets, but looked around, wondering if any of this was the sort of thing Pansy would wear now. "Is it important to be an example of your house's traits, in your world?"

Arion shrugged. "Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't," he said. "When you're in school, it's sort of a big deal. But after you're out and in the real world, it doesn't really matter all that much, at least to me."

As he was speaking, an associate at the shop came up and asked if they needed any help. "I'd like to see these necklaces, please," Arion said, gesturing to a group of six necklaces in the back corner of the case. Once they were all set out on the counter, he began looking over them closely, trying to decide if Adele would like any of them.

"What do you think of this one?" he asked Theodore, pulling forward a simple diamond necklace. "Too simple?"`

"Not like the factions, then," Theodore said. From what he had observed, the world with factions put quite a bit more emphasis on traits that defined people. In that world they did affect a person's entire life. The factions made sense to him, because he was used to the districts; the Hogwarts houses were still something he was a little bit unclear on. Not that he didn't understand the concept, but the point of them was a little beyond his ability to grasp without having lived through it.

He moved closer to look at the necklaces, but the shine of them all seemed to be the same to him. The simple necklace seemed less gaudy than some, though, so he shook his head. "No, I think simple is good." He paused, then added, "But my opinion of jewelry is probably not very accurate for your world."

Arion shrugged and pushed the simple necklace off to the side. "Simple is good, but simple is anything but Adele. Your mother is one of the most complicated women I've ever met. I don't think simple is enough."

He then reached for a teardrop shaped necklace, but soon set it aside, along with two more that looked similar. Then he grabbed a necklace that looked like a cross between a sun and a flower. "This one is nice," he said. "Not simple, but not entirely complicated."

"She doesn't seem complicated to me," Theodore said, but his tone was thoughtful, not argumentative. He had an entirely different perspective, of course. He was more similar to his mother than Arion was. "But I suppose she is."

He thought the teardrop shaped necklace was very nice, but didn't say as much aloud. This was not the gift he was choosing for his mother, but the one that Arion was choosing for her. And frankly, it seemed that Arion understood her better, at least this version of her. "It is nice," he agreed. He found the pattern of what he assumed were meant to be flower petals very pleasing to the eye.

Arion stared at the necklace for a bit, then nodded. It really was beautiful, and was 100 coins. He knew that he would be earning coins through his scientist soon, and he didn't think a goal of at least 100 was unattainable. He looked at the shop associate and nodded. "Could I put this on hold, please?" he asked, and the associate went to find the proper paperwork he needed to sign.

"Your mother is one hell of a woman," he said then. "Sometimes it's hard to believe that she's here with me. I just hope we don't get sent back any time soon. Or ever, really."

"This is a place where we can have the people we've lost," Theodore said. In his case, of course, he was a person that had been lost. But he also was happy to have his mother here, even if it hadn't had quite as much of an effect on him as it had Arion. Well, at least not in the same way. He had grown accustomed to being self-sufficient, to not even counting on his father for anything, because his father was so often busy or away in the Capitol, and even when they spent time together they were quite formal.

Arion was something else altogether. After a moment, he asked, "How much did you see me after she died?"

Arion scratched his head and opened his mouth to speak, but stopped when the associate returned. After signing the papers, he stood tall and motioned for the two of them to exit the shop. "I didn't see you as much as I liked," he admitted.

"I always liked spending time with you when you were a baby," he said. "After you were born, your father didn't really do much to stop Adele and I from seeing each other, so I spent a lot of time with you. She would bring you to my flat, or I would go to the house and we would all be together. But after she died, your father tried to keep me from going to the funeral. He didn't think it would be proper, for her lover to be there, because he knew that her death affected me more than it ever would affect him. He had the son he wanted, and he didn't need anything else from her. So after that, there wasn't really a point to any of it. Your father took over raising you, and that was that."

As they left the shop, getting back out into the cold street, Arion sighed. "Listen, Theodore. I know that I'm not your father. I never tried to be, and I'm not going to pretend to be now. But... I love your mother. And I want to be here for you. So if you ever need to talk about something, anything. You can come to me... you know, if you want."

Theodore wasn't sure what kind of answer he expected, but that answer made quite a bit of sense. It would have been a very strange concept for him to grasp if Arion had said that his father Tewdric had simply accepted his wife's lover in his son's life. But it was entirely believable that his father had tried to keep Arion away. Theodore wondered how his other self felt about that, in Arion's world. For him, it didn't inspire any emotion in particular.

But the offer took him by surprise. He had sort of already understood that the sentiment was there, since Arion seemed so interested in meeting him, but he had wondered at it. Even Tom Riddle, his father's closest friend, had not had much of an emotional investment in Theodore, though they'd had some very interesting conversations. He wasn't sure what sort of thing he might need to talk to Arion about, either. He supposed that the perspective he had about Adele might be slightly helpful when it came to dealing with Pansy, but he'd have to trust Arion with Pansy's secrets to do that, and he wasn't sure how he felt about that. His mother was one thing; she'd met his mother, she'd never met Arion.

Still, he took the offer seriously. After a moment's thought, he nodded. "Thank you."

Arion nodded in return and gestured down the street, continuing to walk. He didn't really want to look for anything else for Adele at that moment though. He knew he would probably end up getting her more than just the necklace, but until he actually started earning coins, he didn't want to set his heart on anything he wouldn't be able to afford later.

"Anything else you want to ask me?" he asked Theodore then. He had hoped to learn about the boy, but either there wasn't much to tell or Theodore didn't feel like talking about himself. Either way, Arion didn't want to pressure him, but he did want to keep him talking.
