RP: Well, this is awkward
Who: Dennis, Wayne, Rolf and OPEN

What: A hilariously awkward meet up

Where: The Bestiary, Diagon Alley

When: Friday, 10th of October, Morning

Rating: Currently SFW

Dennis walked briskly down Diagon Alley from the Prophet's offices, stopping to pick up two coffees and two chocolate croissants along the way. He'd managed to turn in a couple of articles early, and so had the morning off and figured he'd go and see Rolf. The day was cloudy and blustery and he pulled his coat more firmly around him, visibly drooping in relief as he reached the Bestiary.

He wandered through the shop, waving to the assistant, and passed into the back room without a second thought. He looked around curiously for Rolf, then shrugged; he wasn't always here and Dennis had enough time to kill to wait for him. Casting some preservation charms on the croissants and coffees, he sat down and pulled out the notepad he habitually carried with him, jotting down some notes for future articles. He was concentrating so hard he nearly didn't hear the person call out on the shop floor. "Is that you Rolf," he called, poking his head out the door to see what was going on.

Wayne's eyes darted between Rolf and Dennis, waiting for something miraculous to happen and he would be able to get out of this situation. But, apparently, not even magic was magic.

"I, uh," he stalled, hoping that Rolf would go away.

You know what? he thought to himself suddenly. Fine. If he wants to do it like this, we can do it like this. Suits me just fine.

"Look, I'm sorry I didn't call back, it's just...I've been really busy. I had family stuff all this weekend, and...I work like 60 hours a week. And you were in Indonesia? So -- " Wait. Picking a fight --> bad idea.

"But I got your message. Rose is your...flatmate, I take it? Sister?"

Dennis glanced at Rolf, who seemed content to stand as a silent and forbidding sentinel in the background. He felt a rush of brotherly love for the man, and decided to buy him a ridiculous and obscene amount of dried chilli mangos and Turkish delights as a thank you.

"You, uh, what," Dennis asked, lifting his eyebrows questioningly. He knew he was being a prat and that it probably wasn't fair to be so angry, but a lot of other things that were bothering Dennis seemed to have coalesced into a white hot anger over this small and insignificant issue.

His expression grew slightly less frigid at the apology. "Look, it was a random drunken hookup that I actually barely remember," he said, taking a deep breath and deciding to not make an issue of the slight ethical dilemma inherent in hooking up while black-out drunk. "It's not like I was expecting some deep and meaningful relationship or anything like that, and I know what working long hours is like, but even a text to acknowledge the message would've been nice." He glanced at Rolf again then stood up slightly straighter. "And yes, I was in Indonesia but I did have an international sim so you could have reached me."

He moved his shoulders uncomfortably, remembering the slightly awkward and deeply hungover message he'd left after Rose had growled at him for moping. "Rose is one of my best friends, and flatmates, and also my other best friend's girlfriend," he said pointing at Rolf.

Rolf, unfortunately, wasn't going away unless Dennis told him to, partly because this was his shop, and partly because Dennis was in a temper and that could be dangerous, but also partly because he didn't know this guy who had made his friend mope around and hurt his feelings a bit and that always made him rather, well, over-protective.

He did content himself to stay in the background, however, and let himself be taken as an unknown threat without actively doing anything to be threatening. Unless you counted him putting the large cage of large tarantulas down on the nearby shelf, which was actually only because it was getting heavy and he really didn't want to compromise the spell keeping them in by casting a lightening charm on it.

He did have to wonder what he could do to short circuit what seemed like a spat of very bad sexual decisions on Dennis' part since Paden had done what he'd done. He really didn't like to see his friend getting into these situations. He gestured, a small thing, encouragingly at Dennis when he glanced back, proud that Dennis was able to rein in his temper, which Rolf knew ran hot and fast though icy as well.

Rolf gave Wayne a small, tight lipped smile and a small, short wave.

"Yeah," Wayne sighed, deflating. "I shoulda been more clear that I'm not-- this isn't-- it was just-- I'm really not looking for anything-- Shit." Wayne ran his hands through his hair and pulled it, trying to get his feet on the ground somehow.

Well, he could at least try to make it as uncomfortable for the others as it was for him, right now. Underhanded, maybe, but he wasn't thinking especially clearly about making good choices.

"Dennis, look. I didn't mean to blow you off. I can't actually text, but that's sort of not the point. Anyway." He ticked off bullet points on his fingers.

"We were both drunk. But you didn't actually seem unwilling, by the way. And for drunk sex it was actually pretty good - you seemed to like the things I could do with my mouth. And I didn't disappear, I left you my number. Not a fake one, I should mention."

Wait. What was his point?

"Sorry I was a jerk. But not as big a jerk as I could have been, and..." Deep breath. Steps.

"Making amends is sort of a thing I'm trying to do right now. So. There's that. I'm sorry you got burned by your boyfriend or whatever, but this wasn't ever going to be more than one night."

Dennis stood his ground resolutely. "Well, thank you for your honesty," he said, feeling a lot of the anger drain from him. "For the record I'm not looking to settle down with anyone at the moment either," he lied, deciding that it would be pointless to add that while he was looking for someone, it definitely wouldn't be with a drunken one night stand.

The ghost of a smile touched his lips as the man began ticking points off his fingers. "You make a couple of good points, and while I seem to remember that I was quite into it at the time it still was a bit..." He looked at Rolf for inspiration. "A bit dubious let's say, and the number was very nice but really if you weren't going to reply you probably could have just left nothing. I'm a big boy, I can get over these things. Still, I appreciate the sentiment if not the delivery." He sighed again and nodded. "You weren't that much of a jerk, and sorry for being pissy with you."

Dennis felt any feelings of warmth suddenly freeze at the mention of Paden. He tried to stop the pain pinch his face even as spears of ice seemed to impale his chest. "I... You... I told you about my ex," he asked in a would-be-calm voice. "Wow, I must've been even more paralytic than I thought if I mentioned that. Alright then," he turned to go back out in the back room in case he embarrassed himself by crying, before the word amends sunk into his brain. "Good luck with the whole alcoholics anonymous thing. Maybe try not to get shit faced and pick up random strangers in bars if you're on the programme," he said over his shoulder, before opening the door and going to lean against the bench with his head in Bast's fur.

Rolf thought for a long moment that everything was going to go just fine. That it would wrap up in as neat a bow as such things could ever wrap up, given it had been a very drunken encounter where consent was dubious at best. That was something that definitely concerned Rolf.

But then the jerk mentioned Dennis' ex, and Rolf visibly winced. Fucking Paden and fucking Tom and someday he'd fucking hurt them. Rolf wasn't generally one for foul language but those two brought out the absolute worst in him in regards to Dennis these days.

"You are such a fucking jerk, you idiot," Rolf said, exasperated and angry, as the door closed behind Dennis. At least the cat went with him, he thought, as she'd try to comfort him. Otherwise she might try to defend him and he'd have a claw whirlwind on his hands. Dennis might be a bit dramatic even now, but that was a sore point that should have been obvious if the man knew even that much about Dennis. He stalked away from the shelf and the tarantula, glaring.

He stopped right in front of Wayne, looming a little. Looming didn't come naturally to his generally gentle, good natured Hufflepuff nature, but when you were as tall as he was, you really didn't have to work hard at it. "Here's a hint, next time you're saying no to more, if he'd even been offering, don't bring up a person's ex as you do so. That's just low and dirty, though not quite as low and dirty as taking home someone who was as drunk as Dennis was and having sex with him." That bothered him more deeply than anything else, honestly. He drew on his experience with his remote, cool parents and grandparents, giving the man a disgusted, cool look before turning around and heading toward the door again.

"Ethan will help you find whatever you need. The Bestiary thanks you for your business," he said flatly before slipping inside.

He saw Dennis leaning on the counter and Bast curled around his head, purring so loudly that Rolf was surprised he hadn't heard it over the blood in his ears through the door. His familiar was also patting a paw on a curl, claws carefully in, with every appearance of actually comforting Dennis, which honestly he thought that's what she was doing. He went over and wrapped his arms around Dennis, hugging him tightly. "Hey, Cubby," he murmured, all coolness discarded at the door.

Wayne was unsure if he was the idiot fucking jerk, or if Rolf was talking to another person, but he was relatively sure he was the idiot fucking jerk.

Plus, it had been Dennis that propositioned him, hadn't it? That was how Wayne remembered it. Though it was all mildly fuzzy.

Speaking of which - how the hell had Dennis been able to call him on the AA shit? That was fucking embarrassing, and Wayne was mildly peeved.

"You're both unnaturally tall, you know that?" Wayne called, voice empty of any sort of bitterness or anger. Not because he wasn't bitter or angry, but because it was second nature to him, having worked in customer service for his entire adult life.

Pacing, he stuffed his hands in his pockets and balled them into fists to keep himself from punching walls. Ugh, he needed a drink. Or a few rounds with the punch bag.

His first instinct - to call out "I don't owe you any explanation" - was shouted down by the better angels in his head that said, yes, as a matter of fact, you sort of do.

Plus, he'd meant what he said. It was awful, what Dennis's ex had done to him. No one deserved that shit. But he knew better than to chase someone down when he clearly didn't want to be followed, and after deciding against leaving a note, left the shop instead. He'd look at frogs later.
