RP: None of That!
Who: Orla Quirke and Roger Davies

What: Snarking and wedding present shopping

Where: London

When: Monday 6 October, Morning

Rating: SFW

Roger sat in the middle of a café, impatiently drumming his fingers on the table as he sipped his coffee (his third for the morning) and read the Guardian. It was a Monday morning and Oxford Street heaved with people, a fact which usually calmed Roger down, but today only seemed to add to his sleep-deprived irritation. Following Appleby's loss in their last game, Roger had been having trouble sleeping sure that he was somehow partly-responsible for his team's inability to win at home or stay on form. Luckily, he was going to be spending the day with Orla which usually lifted his spirits immensely. He glanced up again, hoping to see her walking towards him - although they weren't set to meet for another fifteen minutes - and sighed. Shrugging a little he went back to his paper, tutting to himself as he read his way through the World News section.

Finally, after ten minutes and a slice of cake that would have given the team nutritionist the vapours, Roger looked up and smiled. "Hey you, I've been sat here waiting for ages like and idiot!"

"Well, that's your fault for getting here too early," Orla said with an easy smile. Sure, she had a tendency to generally arrive early -- and today was technically no exception as her watch said she still had five minutes until their agreed upon meet-up time -- but that was beside the point. He didn't have to get there "ages" ago to be waiting so long, but she wasn't about to lecture Roger or something. Besides, the thought of him waiting around like an idiot amused her more than a quick rundown on analysing when someone tends to arrive and planning accordingly.

"Anyway." She tugged down the hem of her hoodie, glad for the protection from the chill -- and also glad it wasn't quite yet winter, even if she had a few nice coats for the occasion. "You ready to hunt down a wedding present, or should I let you finish and come back in a few minutes?" Although she'd eaten and already had a couple of cups of coffee, the smells coming from the cafe weren't exactly uninviting. But did she really need another cup? That was the great debate she'd likely have for the rest of her life.

Roger rolled his eyes gently at his friend and stuck his tongue out at her. "Trust me it was either get here early and have some breakfast or sit at home stewing in my own thoughts," he said with candour. "Plus you know I was just teasing, it's not your fault I was here for ages."

He nodded and got up. "Wait a mo, I'll just go pay for my coffee and cake," he said, sauntering over to the counter and giving the waitress his most dazzling smile as he paid. "So, Sybil managed to smuggle me a list of things she and Cyprian would actually really like that have been deemed too 'common' by her mother," he said as he walked back over to Orla. "So I thought we could go have a look around Marks and Spencer?"

"Oh, brilliant!" Orla said when Roger told her the news about getting a smuggled list of items. It was always easier shopping for wedding presents when there were lists, even if the items on the list weren't practical. Not that she was silently accusing Roger's... cousin, was it? Not that she was accusing Sybil and Cyprian of being illogical. She didn't even know them! But she did know some people bought more practically and that weddings had a tendency to bring out the practical home presents in loads of people, not just the bride and groom, and that that had its own problems. Too many toasters or blenders, for instance, and not enough of other needed or wanted items. Or not enough fun things the couple could enjoy together. So a list was always nice in her opinion.

"Marks and Spencer sounds like a great place to start! And, with luck, finish, too." Not because she was completely against shopping so much as she really did enjoy being able to get what she needed in as few shops as possible. It was a convenience store for her, a time saving thing, and that desire to kill two birds with one stone was with her today. Her mind wandered a little bit at the possibility of picking up a few things for herself and for Christmas for her friends (it was never too early to shop for Christmas) if time permitted. Or if she stumbled upon something she thought someone might like. "Lead the way," she said, bouncing lightly on her feet, excited at the prospect of what this shopping excursion would bring.

Roger laughed and clapped Orla on the shoulders in a friendly manner. "I know right, it makes the whole exercise so much bloody easier," he said, fishing the list out of his pocket and handing it over to her. When he'd received the list - delivered by one of the interns at Cyprian's bank - he'd spent a little while laughing at the things that Sybil's mother had considered too common to be given as wedding presents. The list had included items such as flatware and plates that had colours other than off white, a rice cooker, a mortar and pestle, and a spice rack. "Apparently Sybil's mother is of the opinion that her daughter and future son-in-law are far too well bred to actually cook for themselves and will therefore have to starve," Roger said with a grin as he led the way down the street to Marks and Spencer.

He snorted at her practicality and nodded. "Well I already got them a season pass to the Tate Modern, so there's a good chance we'll find everything I need," he said as he idly scratched at his stubble. Sybil hadn't asked for it, but he'd had a conversation with both her and Cyprian the previous week where they'd chatted about mooching around the Musée d'Orsay when they were in Paris, and decided they'd probably get a kick out of the pass. "Besides, once we get them out of the way, we can look for stuff for us," he added with a grin as they entered the department store.

Oral took the list and read off the items silently to herself. She thought she'd remember there being some kind of stink about a wedding registry and whether or not it contained suitable presents for a wedding. Either that, or she was making it all up based on the fact that this list had to be smuggled to Roger. Nothing on the list screamed particularly forbidden to her (as, perhaps, things of a more risque nature might have), but she didn't know the bride's mother. Perhaps she was a bit mental or something, especially if she were of the opinion that class was directly related to being able to cook for oneself. She handed the list back to Roger as they entered the store.

"Exactly," she said in response to him saying that once they got the wedding shopping out of the way, they could do some personal shopping. "I think," she began, glancing around for a trolley, "that you should really consider the rice cooker." She spotted a stray trolley and grabbed it before anyone else could, wheeling it back over to Roger. "It's both the most practical and the most fun sounding product. Plus, if Sybil's mum is so against her and her future husband cooking, I think that's all the more reason to get it." She smiled at her reasoning, suddenly wishing she could be around when this uptight mother saw her daughter and son-in-law unwrapping the rice cooker.

Roger watched Orla read through the list and grinned to himself. Ever practical, he could see the gears whirring behind her head, discerning the best possibly item on the list. Orla's practicality was just one of the reason Roger enjoyed her company so much - she tended to ground everyone around her.

He bit his lip for a second, weighing up his desire to tweak his nose at a woman who deemed a rice cooker to be somehow offensive with his desire to keep the peace; the desire to make nice had approximately the same chance as a snowflake in a thermonuclear explosion. "I think you're right," he agreed wolfishly as he led the way to the Home section. "It's not like I can't handle an irate socialite." Looking around for a moment, he spotted the cooking section and after a moment of browsing, he plonked the most expensive rice cooker into the trolley. "That was easy," he commented with a smile. "Now what?"

"There's also the fact that Sybil and Cyprian likely won't be opening wedding presents at the wedding. They tend to take those home, so it's possible her mum will never even see it until she visits and snoops about!" Orla didn't really know if Sybil's mum were the type to snoop about someone else's home, but it wouldn't surprise her one bit. Some mums were just that mental. Thankfully, she didn't think her mum would ever snoop about her home whether or not she were married. And if she did, well, Orla hoped she'd have a good reason, like trying to find something she actually needed or wanted as opposed to just being nosy.

"Well, I'd idly thought about browsing for Christmas presents. Get some of my shopping done early, or at least get some ideas." Although it was never too early to get Christmas shopping started, she wasn't entirely sure what to get everyone. "Did you have anything else you needed to get while here," she asked. After all, coming in for something was more important than idly browsing for possible Christmas ideas.

Roger shrugged and smiled. "I'm assuming so, I mean there's the whole Graeco-Celtic element of my mother's family, so you never quite know which tradition they'll follow but I think that's the plan. Sybil's mother put the kibosh on the whole money pinning thing." He hummed looking around the store for a moment, thinking for a moment about what to do next.

"That sounds perfect to me actually," he agreed genially. "I need to get some Christmas ideas too. I have to buy for you, and the Marcus, and the girls, and a whole bunch of people. Where do you want to look first?"

"Marcus, huh?" Orla wiggled her brows a little, grinning at Roger. She had her own opinions and issues with Marcus, even now, but she was more than capable of shoving them aside, especially if it meant teasing Roger. That, and she couldn't place who the girls were off the top of her head and didn't want to let on to that. "Well if you need to get ideas for Marcus, let's head off to the men's section. Unless you think he'd like bake-ware?" Who knew; maybe he did. "You can get him a rice cooker, too." Or not, but the thought amused Orla either way. "Plus, I can get ideas for Dad there. He's always a pain to shop for. Never know what he'll like, and he always says to just surprise him." She shook her head a little bit, thinking about how she used to get him all sorts of ties. She was pretty sure he only wore them to make her happy. But now that she could afford to get him more than a tie, she'd been trying to figure out the perfect presents for him. She thought she had a few ideas, but she wanted to run them by her mum before committing to anything.
