Who: Charlie and Susan

Where: Hampstead Heath

Charlie had had a light 'lunch' around the time most people were heading out of work and fed a very demanding Echo, and then he'd changed into workout clothes. He'd been meaning to explore places out of Wizarding London for a while, but it had taken some asking around his staff for suggestions that might work. In the end he'd settled on Hampstead Heath, and set about charming his prosthetic a solid black and strapped his wand holster to his leg. Normally he'd put it elsewhere but the black dragonhide mostly blended into his charmed leg and it was far less irritating when he was working out.

He apparated to a stand of trees he'd been told about not far from a small pond and wandered out onto a nearby path and set about warming up, using a bench to make it easier on himself. Soon he was off at a gentle jog along the path he'd been told would loop around the pond. At least it was slightly more interesting than just trees and grass to look at.

It was some time before he realised he must have headed in the wrong direction and he was by a pond sure enough, but the path wasn't really looping around. He slowed to a walk and started looking around, wondering where he'd gone wrong. It was always possible he'd apparated in to the wrong place to start with. And there were too many muggles around for a point me spell. "Fuck," he muttered.

Susan and Shadow were out for an early evening run. She'd made a promise to herself - and to Shadow - that every night she'd go for a run. Usually she'd give herself the occasional day off, but her dog seemed supernaturally good at indicating her vast levels of disapproval at any missed exercise.

Thus it was that she found herself running along one of their favourite paths in the Heath, the iPod her brother had filled with music for her strapped to her arm, when she saw a rather confused man looking around. She slowed to a jog as she noticed the wand in the dragonhide holster, strapped to an obviously charmed prosthetic leg. "Wotcher," she called out pleasantly, Shadow crying and pulling on the lead in her efforts to go and introduce herself to the man. "Out running with the Muggles I see," she added.

Charlie was about to do the expected nod of greeting to his fellow runner when she passed, even if her dog was gorgeous, not quite ready to admit defeat and ask for directions, but when she mentioned muggles he slumped in relief. "Oh, thank Merlin," he said with feeling. "Yes, but a bit lost I'm afraid. First time running here and I think I took the wrong path."

He grinned at the straining dog. "Hello, you," he said, directing it at the dog. "Is your dog friendly?" he asked, about two seconds from going down on one knee and letting himself be licked if she confirmed it was.

"Oh, I'm Charlie Weasley by the way," he said, offering a hand for her to shake with a smile.

Susan chuckled lightly. "It's not that hard to get lost, there's three ponds and often people giving instructions won't specify which pond you're meant to run around. Although really, it's all lovely to run this time of year."

She sighed with resignation and nodded. "Yes, this is my deeply terrifying guard dog. Her name's Shadow on account of the fact that she is utterly white and she will follow me around like a second skin at times." She watched as Shadow showed her deep level of appreciation for the man known plainly. Well, if he was good enough for the Dark detecting dog, then he was good enough for her.

"Pleasure to meet you," she said warmly. "I'm Susan Bones. I'm fairly sure I work with at least two of your brothers or cousins," she said with a grin. "I don't imagine there's a lot of Weasleys."

"Oh, I'm all for a good run, but I was trying to follow instructions and..." he trailed off with a good-natured shrug. "I really wish they'd told me there were different ponds though."

He laughed. He could imagine the dog could be terrifying, but mostly she seemed friendly and eager right now. He bent his bad leg and reached out his hands to stroke Shadow, which she seemed delighted by. "She's beautiful, although I note you've gone the Hagrid method of naming: irony and everything being adorable," he said with a grin. "Yes, hello," he said, to a very enthusiastic Shadow. He was lucky that most non-lethal animals tended to like him, and he was pretty good with some of the more dangerous ones too.

"You'd be surprised," he said with a laugh. "There's se- six of us siblings," he said, swallowing with a little jolt of grief. "You work with Ron and Percy, there's also Bill, George and Ginny, plus our parents. Pretty big family really." Their extended family was also fairly extensive, it was hardly surprising given their bloodline though. Not that they got on with several elements, but they were family to one degree or another. He knew the Bones name too, but that seemed like something not to bring up, like Fred.

"I'm fairly certain Hampstead Heath was designed by a psychopath with a duck pond fetish," Susan replied with a wry shake of her head. "It's not that surprising you got lost around here really, especially if you don't live locally."

She laughed and nodded. "Actually, you have to blame Rolf for that one. He rather helped in the whole naming process," she paused, suddenly aware that she was name dropping. "Rolf Scamander rather. He introduced me to this beautiful girl," she said, earning a tail wag and a happy bark from her dog. "She's very good at judging character you know."

Susan felt a stab of sadness at the way he fumbled for words. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way," she said quickly. "I just meant that most Weasley's would have to be related to you. I like Ron and Percy though, and I'm used to seeing George's handiwork with Percy." She paused for a moment and looked at him carefully. "Would you like to keep running? I can show you a good route?"

Charlie snorted at her frank analysis. "See, this is the sort of fucked up shit people should tell me when recommending new places for me to run."

"Rolf's a good guy," he agreed. "Let me talk dragons for ages last week." He gave Shadow a good scratch and stroke. "She is gorgeous, although I think my cat is going to be mad at me now. I can't imagine he's a dog lover," he added.

He waved his hand to brush off her words."No, it's fine. And not everyone appreciates Perce, although he's a good bloke." He stood up, pressing onto his good leg to be sure his prosthetic didn't do something weird and then brushed it off. "Yes, I'd love that. I could use some more routes to try out. How far do you usually run?" he asked, stretching slightly.

"Well, to be perfectly fair: most of London is fairly psychotic in its layout. I mean the whole bloody place burnt down after an unfortunate workplace accident and it made things worse, not better," Susan replied with a little grin. "But as a general rule it is polite to inform people of the number of ponds there are in an area when they're going to be exercising in it."

She lifted her eyebrows in surprise. "Oh you know him? Well it's not surprising I suppose. I seem to remember Professor Hagrid talking fondly of you at some point, so I'm guessing you worked with animals before opening your fabulous nightclub," she said as glanced and assessed his prosthetic - in place no doubt because of some sort of dragon-related accident. It was probably slightly rude, but Aurors just weren't as put off by prosthetics and scarring as other people were. Probably part of a slightly warped world view, but there it is was. "Poor cat, it must be horrible to have your owner be unfaithful to you."

"Heh, I guess you're right. That git Blaise Zabini seems to hate him on sight, so I like him on sight out of principle." She grabbed hold of Shadow's leash properly, looping the handhold around her wrist properly. "I don't really have a set length that I run, really. I just sort of go until I get tired and then eat a danish."

"London's great for exploring because of the fucked up street plan, but it's so much easier when you can duck into a hidden doorway and apparate away when you get lost or bored," he said with a grin.

He shrugged in response to her surprise. "It was actually the first time I'd met him, although I obviously know the family name, but yes, I'm something of an animal fan, although Kettleburn was my professor not Hagrid," said, straightening up after checking his wand was secure. "And yes, about thirteen years of dragon-keeping and research in Romania until I lost my leg to Vipertooth poison earlier this year," he sighed. "Couldn't keep up after that; hence the club. Glad you like it by the way." He might well have served her drinks at one point or another now that he thought about it but the light wasn't usually that great for picking out features and half the time he barely had chance to remember more than the most basic of features to ensure he got drinks to the right people.

"Fair enough," he said with a mental shrug. "Not my usual method, but lead the way," he said, gesturing the way she'd been heading when they met.

Susan laughed lightly and nodded. "We're obliged to memorise vast swathes of central London during our training, which is tedious at the time but rather useful as the years that go on. Helps with finding places to disapparate and apparate in."

"Oh Rolf's lovely and very enthusiastic," she said, patting Shadow on the head. "It would have been interesting to have Kettleburn as a teacher, but Hagrid was very... Enthusiastic. I liked him." She nodded empathetically and glanced at his prosthesis with a clinical eye. "It's really a fantastic prosthesis though," she remarked, leaning forward to glance at it more closely. "Where'd you get it made and fitted if you don't find the question too forward?" She nodded and tilted her head. "I love it actually, just what the community needs. Plus I like the LGBT nights."

"Alright," she said, securing the leash and leading him in a gentle trot towards Parliament Hill. "I usually run around the bathing ponds on the edge of the Heath, then back and down to my house," she said conversationally. "It's a good twenty minute jog."

Charlie nodded thoughtfully, he knew some bits of central London, but mostly he just liked to explore when he was out and about.

"Hagrid's great, the animals thing endeared me to him, but... hmm, I'm not sure he'd be the best teacher, although I'll grant he's good with animals himself." Bit too enthusiastic about the more dangerous ones, and a little too much trust in them. See: Norberta. "The wonders of magic, it usually changes colours, but I have to charm it when I've got it exposed in front of Muggles," he said with a grin. Thankfully not a tricky transformation. "Nah, I don't mind so much," he said, and quickly explained where he got it. "They were great and I was fucking relieved to get off my arse and on my feet again. 'Course then I had to deal with the smothering my mother calls care for a bit." He was more amused than critical though, and anyone else who criticised his mother tended to find the pointy end of his wand. "I figured I like music, I like to move, to dance, couldn't see why every other bugger with itchy feet wouldn't too, and Queer nights were mostly Seamus' idea, but they've been going well so far," he said.

Charlie started off at an easy lope with her, his stride not quite as even as it once was as his prosthetic flicked forwards from the knee, but it was easy for him to keep up. "Sounds good to me," he said. He was used to runs of up to half an hour or more so it wouldn't be too bad.

Susan nodded and laughed slightly. "I know precisely what you mean. Harry tells lots of interesting stories actually, although he attracted trouble like... Something that attracts a lot of trouble." She shook her head slightly and resisted the urge to poke her tongue out at Shadow, who was wagging her tail in what felt like amusement. "I did wonder about the charms actually, still it looks good!" She listened attentively, absently scratching Shadow on the back of the head, nearly causing her to topple over with pleasure. "Oh so you have a terrifyingly protective mother too? They're great aren't they?" She smiled, remembering with amusement the last time her mother had waded in against two of Susan's exes and turned the Wizengamot against them. "I love the idea to be honest. The club is great and the drinks are cheaper than some of the better places in Muggle London."

Susan nodded and led him on the route, running at the sort of politely gentle speed that was expected when two people were yet to know one another's running styles. After about fifteen minutes of running, she turned and looked at her running companion. "I don't quite know how to suggest this without coming across like a serial killer or some sort of desperately undersexed vixen, but my house is quite near here if you want a drink of water and somewhere where you can actually disapparate from."

"Yeah, Harry always was a bit of a compass for trouble from what I know, I've gotta hope he's improved now he's an auror though!" He grinned at Susan interacting with Shadow, clearly they had a great relationship. "Thanks, I prefer it when it's cycling, but it's a bit hard to explain out here," he said, cheerful enough about the change.

"My mother is... a force of nature is probably the best description. When you have seven children with no major gaps become very good at dealing with the assorted shit children bring. I mean I love her to pieces but a. I would never cross her because she's still fucking scary when you're a thirty-plus business owner, but b. she is a tiny bit smothering sometimes." Plus she'd killed Bellatrix Lestrange. Not something to take lightly.

He kept up with her easily, but he didn't want to pick it up a notch even though he was pretty sure she would be comfortable with it because perhaps it wasn't her plan for the run, and once in a while his leg would do something wild if went too fast and he'd end up on his face or arse. "Ah, I, er," the mention of her being potentially undersexed made him somewhat uncomfortable. But it wasn't like he'd never been in a situation like it before, often far more brazen. "Well if it's just the water and the apparition point that'd be great, thanks," he said.

Susan shook her head and grinned. "Harry Potter being anything but a magnet for trouble is utterly inconceivable. He attracts more weirdos in a day then I do all week," she grinned viciously and continued, "However he also gets to kick a lot of arse so really it's a good thing." She looked at him and grinned. "Yes, well 'Charlie and the Amazing Technocolour Dreamleg' would probably lead to some interest amongst the Muggles."

"I've heard of Molly Weasley," Susan admitted with a smile. "Harry speaks of her fondly, and her duel with Lestrange is a thing of legend in Magical Law Enforcement."

She laughed quietly. "Trust me, just water and an apparition point. Nothing untoward at all," she said with a grin. "Plus Shadow will be around to protect your honour." Still chuckling, she led the way out of the park and through the quiet, leafy streets to her house. Slowing down to a walk, she casually pulled out her wand and allowed Charlie to enter. She unlocked the door and walked into the kitchen, pouring two glasses of cold water from the refrigerator. "There you go," she said with a smile.

"Well, I guess that's something," he said with a little tilt of his head. "Charlie and what now? Is this some sort of muggle thing? My knowledge of Muggle culture is a bit... spotty. And I do better with Romania than here to be honest."

Charlie smiled, pleased with her comments about his mother. "Mum's something of a force of nature," he admitted. "Always has been."

He followed her into a rather impressive house after finishing the run comfortably. "Thanks," he said, taking the glass of water and guzzling half of it down. "You have a beautiful home," he said, and then bent down and took out his wand, and cancelled the additional charm on his leg and it began its usual slow shift between colours.

Susan laughed genially. "Sorry I was making a pun based on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice." She made an apologetic face. "Sorry, my mouth get's away with me sometimes."

Susan hummed in agreement at Charlie's statement. She'd always privately felt that any mother worth her weight had to be at least a little bit cyclonic in order to be getting on with things.

She nodded absently, frowning as she looked around for the map she'd made. Sighing, she pulled out her wand and summoned it, giving Shadow a long look when it whizzed out of her little dog home under the stairs. "Thank you, it was my Aunts," she said still looking at her dog. "Which I suppose accounts for it being roughly twice as large on the inside as the outside suggests." She watched with deep amusement as Charlie fixed the charms on his leg, allowing it to move between different colours. "Now that is very cool," she commented, finely sipping her own water. "Oh! Yes," she said, suddenly remembering the map in her hands. "This is a map of the best running routes in the Heath by the by," she said, holding the map out for him to inspect.

"No, it's not a problem. Great joke. I just felt like I was missing something." He smiled and gave a sort of careless shrug that showed he really didn't mind.

"Thanks," he said, pleased by the compliment. His leg was hidden a lot of the time now thanks to the weather, but he was still proud of the charm work he'd paid to have added. "It's a hell of a lot more exciting that boring black or something, plus it's adjustable if I want, which is handy," he said. In the first few weeks after it had been fitted he had spent far too much time messing with the charms and he knew exactly how to shift them around now without much difficulty.

He bent over the map with interest, studying it for a few moments. "This is the path we took, yes?" he asked, looking up at her for confirmation that he'd got the right one. As it was he was going to ask if he could copy it. New running paths were always interesting to him.

"You're nice to say so," Susan said with a genial smile. "I forget sometimes that not everyone get's my stupid little pop-culture references."

"It is! I know a couple of the Aurors have similar legs, but the charms really add an awesome dimension to it," she said, glancing at it thoughtfully for a moment. "Do you ever change it to say a queer rainbow on the LGBT nights?"

She looked over and nodded. "Yep that was the one," she replied. "I also run here," she said pointing to a route, "And here. If you want to come running with me again sometime I'd be happy for it. Hell, we could have a running club." She nodded and made a copy of the map for him with a wave of her wand. "It has been lovely meeting you," she said with a smile. "Properly at least."

"I do actually. I nearly forgot for the first one, but it turned out well. Not that most people see it because I'm usually behind the bar, but I like knowing its there." He smiled, pleased he'd come up with the idea.

He took the copy of the map, and smiled before finishing his glass of water. "Thank you for the map, and the water," he said, and handed the glass back to her, "and the run of course. I should get going, can I Apparate from here?" he asked. Receiving a nod he nodded his thanks once more. "I hope to see you soon," he said, before turning so he wouldn't step towards her and Apparating neatly home.
