Q-Topia
I am Romeo Matías García-Davies. Some of you may know me from our time together at Hogwarts. Some may know me from my job cooking at Finnigan's. Some may not know me at all.

I am queer.

If I had to define my gender, I would call myself somewhere between gender fluid and gender neutral. I look like what society would categorize as "a boy", but I do not feel like one. Nor do I feel like a girl. I am floating somewhere comfortable in the middle, a metaphoric foot in the male camp because of my presentation, but the rest of my being gloriously free of the gender binary imposed upon us by society.

If I had to define my sexuality, I would call myself definitely pan...something. I don't see gender as a barrier to love or attraction. With that said I don't necessarily know if I am pansexual... perhaps I am simply panromantic and asexual.

So that is me.

I know there are other people out there who, like me, don't conform to the neat little boxes the world would like to put us in. Maybe you don't fit the gender binary. Maybe you aren't neatly heterosexual. I would like to start a group for all of us to gather, support each other, and talk about the particular issues we face. This is not your school-era Gay-Straight Alliance. This is a utopia. A Queer-topia, if you will. And it is coming soon, if there is enough interest.

(You can make your replies private to me if you are nervous/cautious/not out.)

I don't know what any of those words mean. Time for a new edition of my dictionary.

We are not friends.

All of them?

Anyway, good luck with your group and forming it.

Wow, I didn't know there were that many flavors of queer. That's really interesting.

Where is this group going to be meeting? I'm trying to stay out of pubs just wondering.

Oh my friend, queer comes in all the flavors under the sun. What is it that they say? You must taste the rainbow!

For now I am thinking that we will meet at Finnigan's. I work there, and there is a room we can use for ourselves. Not the main room, with the bar, but a quieter one away from the main flow of traffic.

Hahaha. I think these meetings might require Skittles in bulk.

Are you the new chef person? Yeah, I knew they were looking for someone. That's cool. I wish I could cook food.

Quieter away from the alcohol traffic sounds like a good idea. It'll be nice to be able to hear each other talk.

I'm Ernie MacMillan, and I've been out for years. Something like this would be wonderful for a lot of us. Yes, I do sort of fit into a box as a gay bloke, but it's not the box my father wanted for me, that's for sure.

I'd love to support this in whatever way I can. Just let me know!

Hello, Ernie! I am glad to know you.

I am actually providing snacks for the meeting, and my friend Wayne i going to bring some appropriate sweets. If you were able to provide the beverages, we would appreciate it!

As I said to Wayne, my aim is to make this group an ally-free zone. It is nice when people wish to support us, but it is also important that we can have a space that is just for us - especially because we live in their cishet world more or less full time! It is nice to have some breathing room.

I'll bring some butterbeers! And Wayne's a good guy, it's nice to have him on board.

Take a look at the timetable on the noticeboard and see if you can find a room and day combination you like, I'll pencil you in. Probably come along too, if it doesn't bother you to have your boss there.

I'd prefer if you didn't bring drinks, but I can swing you a special group deal during meetings.

Warded to Romeo: Also it's Finnigan's.

Please may we have Sunday nights in the Roost, sir?

I would rather we did not have alcohol at these meetings. I know of one person for whom they would be a barrier to attending.

Warded to Seamus: Argh, I did it again. Sorry, sir. I've gone back and fixed it.

Alright. Do you have any special requests for Dominic? The Roost is kind of just an empty space unless he's worked on it.

A special deal on soft drinks, then. Maybe a cooler to take up with you for a set group rate and anything that doesn't get drunk can go back into circulation and I'll refund you. We'll sort something out, I'd just rather not have people bringing in drinks from outside.

You really don't need to call me sir.

How fascinating. It's not a subject I've given much thought to but it makes you wonder how ones image of what one gender is to another is influenced by society as well as peer pressure. Baby clothes often come in either blue or pink, perhaps the idea of conditioning as to what a 'female' or 'male' begins at birth, or is birth another part of the cycle?

You've certainly given me something to mull over Mr. García-Davies.

Actually, did you know that originally, pink was given to boys and blue to girls?

Pink was seen as the derivative of red, which was a warlike, strong, passionate color, suitable for men - and blue was the color that the Virgin Mary wears in most depictions of her, so it was a suitably chaste, virtuous and placid color for young girls to wear. According to my own research, this changed in roughly the 1940s, for various reasons.

But you are right. What is gender, anyway? What about you makes you either a man or a woman? I find, for myself, that I have no strong ties to either. I am somewhere outside of sports versus ballet, of action figures versus baby dolls, of playing superheroes versus playing house. So many stereotypes about what a boy or a girl ought to be, and so foolish, all of them!

I think really what it is, is that when a person is born, the doctor or healer delivering the baby looks between the legs and declares "it's a boy" or "it's a girl" and from that moment, society's preconception of what the child should be take over. Subconsciously girls are coddled more, boys are told to "be a man, don't cry", girls are compelled to "be ladylike"... and oh, to me, it is so silly. If and when I have a child, I almost feel like I would not tell anyone their gender until my child is old enough to decide for themself and tell people on their own terms!

I only sort of knew there was a word for me. Although I'd never thought of romantic as separate from sexual. I guess that's one to think on.

That's beside the point though, if you want to stick up flyers at Wingbeat you'd be welcome as long as I can check them first. Particularly for LGBTQ+ night it might bring in more people.

I can show you a lovely little picture that helps to separate out the different layers of identity in a way that's easy to understand, if you like.

Would you like to talk about yourself, to me?

Also yes, that would be lovely, and thank you very much for the offer.
