Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: justin finch-fletchley, character: wayne hopkins

Well, nice meeting you again.
WHO: Justin and Wayne
WHEN: End of morning, Friday 25th Sept.
WHERE: Diagon Alley, then Finnigan's.
WHAT: Looks like Justin bumps into someone he knows..
RATING: PG
STATUS: Ongoing/ask before joining.

Justin strolled around on Diagon Alley, checking the window fronts even though he wasn’t going to buy anything. He wasn’t really shopping, just passing time. Smiling, he noticed inside the Quidditch shop a father and his daughter, looking at brooms. The little girl wasn’t yet of Hogwarts age, but she seemed so passionate that Justin was sure she’d be playing once at school. Chuckling, he kept looking over his shoulder as he started walking again.

This week had seemed endless since his birthday party and he sighed, replaying some of the events. There were a number of things he shouldn't be doing and he had done a bunch of them anyway, starting by hiding it all from Ernie, which had backfired as soon as he drank alcohol. He really needed to be more careful now, in case Ernie would try to keep an eye on him.

Lost in his thoughts, he never saw the other man walking opposite to him and he bumped right into him. “Damn, I’m so, so, so sorry.” He apologized quickly, even before he looked at the other man.

That’s when he recognized him.

There was no way he could forgot him, ever. He hadn't come back, causing him his first heartbreak and now.. now he was standing right there in front of him. “Wayne?” he asked in an uncertain voice even though he was really certain it was him. Of course it was!! Justin would never, ever forget those eyes.

It had been ages since Wayne had been in Diagon Alley. He had barely had a step in the magical world after leaving Hogwarts, just after his fifth year. Eyes cast upward at the roofs of the buildings, Wayne walked directly into--

“Fuck, sorry, wasn’t watching where I was -- Justin? Justin Finch-Fletchley?” Wayne blinked several times, shaking his head in disbelief. He hadn’t expected to run into anyone he knew, much less anyone who would recognize him after so long - and so quickly! And so...literally.

Though it had been years since he’d seen his classmate, it was very definitely Justin. He was the kind of bloke whose puppy-dog-like eyes were instantly recognizable, and that adorably tousled hair. He’d grown up and filled out quite nicely...Wayne took a moment to appreciate, looking Justin up and down.

“Jesus Christ, it’s been ages.” Wayne grinned and offered his hand to shake. “Approximately eleventy squillion years. What the hell are you doing?”

Justin bit his lower lip and grinned. Yep, this was Wayne alright. He shook his hand and after what was a bit longer than acceptable for a handshake, he pulled Wayne to him and hugged the other man briefly before letting go, releasing a shaky breath. He wasn't used to physically touching someone he hadn't seen in so long, except for patients and he wasn't too sure what had brought him to do it.

“I’m doing fine. How..” He made a vague gesture with his hand. “How have you been?” He asked even though he wanted to ask where had he been this whole time? “It’s really been a while, you..” He shifted on his feet, suddenly way too nervous for the situation. “You didn’t come back.” Justin added quietly.

“Yeah,” Wayne breathed after a moment. “Yeah, I...didn’t. Sorry, I...well. It’s a long story. But it’s good to see you doing so well.” As in, not dead or in prison or obviously suffering from long-term spell damage as a result of the war. As in, in one piece.
Ruling out how did you do doing the war and who all is still alive and who turned out gay, Wayne settled on “So, what do you do?” It was the only question he could think of that wasn’t terribly invasive or painful.

Justin tilted his head. Wayne seemed hesitant to talk about not coming back when they were at school, so he didn’t push it. Himself understood why some people didn’t want to go too deep into their past. Except for those who knew him, like Ernie or Susan, Justin didn’t like to talk about this part of his life either.

“Um, I’m a..” He blushed. Of course he would have preferred to be a Healer like Ernie, but his grades in Potions hadn’t been enough for him to pass on to NEWT level, thus stopping him from being able to enroll in Healing. “I’m a Mediwizard.” He loved his job and wasn’t ashamed of it, quite the contrary. It’s just that he didn’t like not achieving his goals.

"That’s,” Wayne replied, “fantastic. And obvious, now that I think about it. You always were talented like that.” Wow, Wayne thought to himself, try to say something more inane and/or stupid.

“Want to grab a drink? It’s…” He checked the time on his Nokia phone. “Probably socially acceptable at this hour. We can catch up.”

Nodding, Justin smile. “Sure,” he answered. “There’s Finnigan’s right around the corner, on Monument Alley. It’s Seamus’ and if we are lucky food will be good today.” He told Wayne excitedly with a very large grin. Of course it had nothing to do with seeing Seamus.. not at all. Hah!

“He’s been having problems with cooks lately.” He made a gesture that could look dismissive but he just didn’t want to go too deep into it.

"Seamus Finnigan, from Gryffindor, right? Our year?” Wayne was usually good with putting faces to names, but it had been almost a decade, after all. “So he’s got a pub of his own, that’s pretty cool. Shame about the cooks.” The idea of applying niggled at his brain, but with Wayne full-time at Maccy D’s and his side job in, ah, recreational herbology, his weeks were well packed. Plus, he reasoned, McDonald’s doesn’t quite count as preparing actual food for people to eat.

“The beer’s all right, though, right?” he asked, digging into his pockets, trying to gague how much money he had on him at the moment. Hard to tell without spilling his pockets onto the street, though.

“Lead the way. Don’t think I’ve heard about Monument Alley. Is that part of that new thing?” He’d heard very little about goings-on in the wizarding world, until his mum told him something new was going on in London, and to go be with his kind. He assumed she meant either wizards or people his age. Maybe both. Either way, she threw him out on his ear and told him to find somewhere else to live.

“So what else is everyone else up to?” He figured that question could be innocuous enough, or at least be dodged if it were dangerous.

Leading the way, Justin smiled. Heh, just like old times! It really did feel like they’d only parted at the end of the semester and were catching up after summer. “Monument Alley is kind of a revamp of Knockturn Alley.” He told Wayne. “Got cleaned up and all.”

“And yeah, that’s the Seamus Finnigan you remember.” He told Wayne, blushing a little. “Or not quite, I mean..” He ran his hand through his already tousled hair and smiled shyly. Seamus was way better looking now than he had been back at school. Besides, Justin had had a soft spot for someone else back then.

“Um, Ernie’s a Healer at the Janus Thickey Ward. Hannah’s a Midwife and Susan works in the Auror Department. Potter, Weasley and Longbottom are there too. And um..” He tried to think about who else did what. “Lavender Brown is a Hit Witch.”

Wayne nodded along - all his classmates’ chosen careers seemed ideal for their personalities and talents, at least as Wayne remembered them.

“Hit witch, Lavender Brown,” he repeated. “That’s...terrifying. Not surprised that so many of the Gryffindors went the Auror route. So do you work with Ernie, then?” he asked, following Justin towards what he assumed to be Seamus’s pub. He probably had enough for the first round for both of them.

“I don’t really..” He said, then he cleared his throat. “I work in the Emergency Room mostly. I like the weird shifts and sometimes it gets really busy, it’s kind of fun.” Justin wanted to avoid talking about that ward as much as he could. He didn’t mind people close to him knowing about his healing time at the ward after the war, but this wasn’t really something he felt comfortable talking about in a catch up conversation.

“I did spend a week there, covering for someone else. It was kind of fun to finally be able to work together.” It was true that while his week had been emotionally hard and draining, he had been looking forward to work with his friend.

"That must have been cool, to work with a friend rather than trying to turn coworkers into friends. It doesn’t surprise me at all that everyone has cooler jobs than me, though, granted, the jobs cooler than fast food is quite a broad field.” Wayne wasn’t normally self-conscious about his terrible job, but it was coming back to him how much more talented and qualified and, well, rich, his Hogwarts classmates were.

The number of his former classmates working to support a child they barely saw was probably in the...ones. Probably just him, he figured.

Justin led them into a pub that, while it was still early in the afternoon, seemed to be...well, “buzzing” was probably pushing it, but they weren’t the only customers.

Wayne picked a two-seater table near the window, to make best use of the daylight while it was burning. He reached a fist into his pocket, withdrawing what turned out to be an assortment of Muggle change, straw wrappers, some AA chips, and...aha! He plucked out a few galleons from among the mess spread out on the table. “I can get the first round.”

Justin sat across from Wayne, but still had a view of the bar. “”What? No, no.” He said, shaking his head. “I wouldn’t dream of it.” He told his former classmate. He really didn’t like to let his friend pay for him because even though he was pretty much on his own, he was still better off than most people.

“Well, let me tell you that if it wasn’t for people working in the fast food industry… there would be no fast food and I’d starve.” He said seriously to Wayne. “Okay, I might not always be eating fast food, but still.. restaurants need to run for those poor blokes who can’t cook to save their lives.” Even with You Tube, he hadn’t managed to make pancakes for Seamus, for Goodness’ sake!!

He looked down at the table and his eyes narrowed, though not accusingly before looking up at Wayne. “You doing okay about these, though?” He asked, as tactful as he could, nodding towards the AA chips.

“Nah,” Wayne shrugged dismissively, self-consciously picking out the wizarding money and shoving the rest of the mess back into his pocket. “It’s not really a thing. Always got snagged around step three. No biggie.”

The less said about that, the better. “Did you finish out all seven years, then? Leave and get twenty A-levels? Travel the world? What all have you been up to?”

Justin could understand that Wayne wouldn’t want to talk about AA, just as much as he didn’t want to talk about what had happened to him during that year. He froze for a moment, trying to figure out what to say. Anyone who knew that he was a Muggleborn knew that he either went on the run or got captured and the question wasn’t often asked.

“I um..” He swallowed, his saliva really thick and making it hard for him. “I went back.” he looked away, his face flushed as a flash came to him. They weren’t really happening as often as before but once in a while, he’d get triggered especially if questions were being asked by people he hadn’t shared this with before.

“So, um..” He ran his hand in his hair again. “Why didn’t you come back though? I know a few parents got scared but um..” Justin mostly wondered why Wayne hadn’t owled.

"Oddly enough," Wayne sighed, rolling his eyes at his own stupidity, "I was just stupid, and it was my stupid ass that...let me start over." Taking a deep breath, Wayne steeled himself. He'd be telling this story a lot in the coming weeks, he figured. May as well start here and now, with Justin.

Where to start, though.

Wayne shifted his weight in the seat, drawing his wallet out of his back pocket. Opening the billfold, Wayne picked out a photo from between bank notes.

It was a cute picture, and seeing it always made him stop and smile, even though it was frayed and taped over.

"His name is Rhys," he said, handing the photo to Justin. In the picture, a little boy of about six was smiling broadly, showing off his three front missing teeth.

"He turns eight this November," he finished, knowing that Justin would quickly do the math, then understand why Wayne hadn't returned to Hogwarts. Even at age sixteen. Though, Wayne and Llinos had both been fifteen when....

Wayne waited to breathe until Justin said something.

He picked up the picture and studied the features for a while before he even said anything. “You have a son..” He said. It wasn’t really a question, but he was mostly stating a fact so that it would compute in his own mind. Sure a few of the people he knew had children, but no one had had a child in their teenage years. “Wow..” He whispered almost in disbelief.

“He’s got..” There was something about Rhys that made Justin smile and he chuckled. “He’s definitely yours, he’s got that glint of mischief in his eyes. Just like you.” He blushed and gave the picture back. Himself had thought about having children at some point, but he wasn’t in a relationship and it could take him a while before his level of comfort brought him there.

He could understand why Wayne hadn’t come back now. He had a family now.

"Yeah." Wayne let the moment sink in.

"So," he continued, "the natural upside of having a kid at sixteen means you can't use magic because of the Trace, plus the mom being a muggle, plus moving to the welsh countryside to live with her gran and help with the kid, means you just..." He shrugged. "Slip through the cracks."

Being a depressing statistic can help save your life, who knew?

"So yeah. Cause I stuck around, made it ten times better than most kids in our situation, which trust me...not an anomaly."

He drummed his fingers, waiting impatiently for his pint. A moment later, it thumped on the table in front of him, and he took a long drink.

Justin said thank you for his soda and stared at Wayne. So much responsibility so early.. “Makes you a better man than most, in that case, you know..” It was sincerely spoken. Wayne had always been a good person and the fact that he had given up school to help raise his child made him way better than a lot of men he even knew in the Muggle World.

“How are you handling it though?” He knew he should probably be giving Wayne back. It had probably taken him all he had in terms of courage to tell Justin what had happened and why would Justin himself hide? Besides, it was really an innocent question.. it had nothing to do with that nagging question in the back of his mind: Was he still with the Mum?

His hands started to shake and he panicked a little at the idea of telling him how things had gone for him while Wayne was away. Sure thing, Wayne would probably just look at him with pity like the rest of them and he didn’t want that. Everyone’s experience during the war was different and just as bad.

"Nah, it's fine," Wayne dismissed, waving a hand. "Like I said, not exactly uncommon."

Well, then. He'd told someone, and the world hadn't ended.

He'd also made it sound casual and easy. It hadn't been, but he didn't want anyone's pity.

"So now I'm in London, because my mum threw me out on my arse and told me to, and I quote, 'get a fucking life and be with my own fucking people.'" Wayne embellished his statement with air quotes.

Justin frowned. “Now that’s just terrible.” He told Wayne though it wasn’t pity he was expressing. He was miffed at her. “But wait..” He was also very confused Wayne had said he had been living with his girlfriend’s gran to raise the baby and now his mother had kicked him out?

“There is a part you missed in between raising the baby and living again with your mum, I think.”

Wayne blinked. "Oh. Right. Um."

Where's he leave off? What'd he skip?

"Llinos - that's her name - didn't need me so much once Rhys started in nursery, so I moved back in with my mum. I figured, save on rent, send more money to Llinos and Rhys...I had steady work, but I guess I took my mum's hospitality for granted." And she'd put her foot down about the pot.

"So here I am."

Wayne finished with a shrug and punctuated with another long drink of beer.

He tilted his head on the side again. She had dumped him once Rhys had started nursery!? And didn’t Wayne’s mother understand that it was better for everyone if he didn’t have to worry about rent and supporting a child!? He buried his indignation, frowning as it really couldn’t be deep enough for him to not show at all.

He sipped his soda before he even relaxed about it. “So here you are.” he replied, nodding and biting his lower lip.

“Um,” he cleared his throat. “How much do you know about what happened after you left?” he asked carefully.

"Not a lot," Wayne admitted, "and I'm not sure I want to know, to be honest, at this juncture. For one, it's way too early in the day. Two, I'm far too sober. Three, I'd rather not dig up other peoples pasts before they're ready. It's like outing someone. You don't know the damage it can do."

The last thing Wayne wanted to do was put people on the defensive, as soon as he reconnects with them. He didn't want to be the cause of anyone else's pain, again.

"Not that I won't be there if you want to talk."

One of the things Wayne took away from the meetings he'd gone to: don't push people to say what they aren't ready to say. Another thing he'd taken away: food, usually.

Feeling incredibly grateful, Justin released a sigh of relief. “Sometimes, it’s not about..” He chewed on his lower lip a moment before he went on. “It’s not about not trusting someone or anything. It’s just hard sometimes, when you explain and the other person had a completely different experience..”

He looked at Wayne and tilted his head. “It’s not that I don’t want you to know. It’s just.. things got really bad after you left.” Maybe it had been a good thing that his friend hadn’t been around for this. “They took over the Ministry after 6th Year and.. and they made up a whole lot of crappy laws.” He shook his head.

“So I didn’t attend 7th Year like most. But I went back once things were resolved.”

"Must have been difficult," Wayne mused, tracing his finger around the puddle of condensation on the tabletop his beer was leaving.

"Like water must be wet, after all." He knew he was understating things, but talking about this - he was being honest earlier. He was too sober and it was too early in the day.

"What about other stuff? Who else from our class is around here? Not around here? Kids? Married? Gay? I want the whole rundown." Wayne wasn't really a gossip per se, but he was aware of how information traveled and how to tap into it.

Plus, he had eight years of gossip to catch up on.

Wayne nodded sagely, not surprised in the slightest. He'd had his suspicions while they were at school. "That's very noble," he told him. "But I'm still kind of dying to know, so maybe you could say who's dated who? At least openly? Come on, Justin," he begged. "Throw me a sodding bone. "You're shitting me," Wayne all-but-gushed. "You AND Ernie? What are the fucking odds?" He paused to drink.

"...you two aren't...together, are you?" Wayne winced at the thought. It just seemed...wrong. "Sorry, let me rephrase that in a non judgmental way. Are you and Ernie together?" He couldn't say it without inwardly gagging, even phrased like that.

"Not that it'd be bad, of course not, but like..." Wayne fumbled, turning red. "If you want, you can forget I asked. Wow, just...two and a half gays from our dorm room alone. What are the damn odds."

I love him dearly, but... but not like that. No." He shook his head calmly. It wasn't lost on him that Wayne had said 'and a half' and he wondered if he should ask.

"Yeah, well," Wayne eased, pretending to be humble, "gotta count myself in there somewhere, but still liking women disqualifies me from counting completely, right?" Wayne took a final drink from his beer, waggling his eyebrows. Plunking the empty glass down, he waved for another round for both of them - even though Justin wasn't yet done with his soda.

"Though, the next person who calls me indecisive gets a punch to the throat. I'm sick to the back teeth of that. But anyway. Anyone married, or have kids? Or move anywhere exciting? Or..." he shrugged, not even sure what he was asking anymore. "Or anything fun to do around here?"

Justin snorted. "It's not being indecisive at all, come on. You know what you want, not the same thing at all. Besides, it kind of increases the pool a little." His own father had tried to brush off his homosexuality by saying he was experimenting, which had only created a wedge between them.

"Megan's married, but other than that.. I'm not.." He sighed and he shook his head. His gaze fell on Seamus for a moment and he blushed, then brought his attention back to Wayne. He was glad for the help and found it easier to manage without the rent. Not that the other expenses were much of a problem anyway.

"I've got the telly and everything." He added, definitely thinking that it was a plus. "You could always come over, I often have movie nights." And usually not alone either, he preferred not to be alone. His gaze once again landed on Seamus.

When I moved here I promised myself that I’d, I dunno, like forge my own identity instead of being that one really young single parent? And here I go again making everything about...well, at any rate, Rhys would love it. But seriously, have you ever seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer? It sounds all violent and ok it’s a little violent, but it’s hilarious, I promise. And The X-Files, holy shit. Do you watch those shows?”

“It’s not about it defining you, but Rhys is part of your life and I accept that.” Justin wasn’t going to make Wayne stop talking about his son, because really, when you meet someone everything comes along. In this case, his former classmate was back and Rhys was part of it. No big deal.

“It’s just that, lots of people use that to define me. Once they know. Which is why I’m careful of who I tell. Because then, I’m either too much of a parent, or not enough one, and it gets...complicated.”

Wayne latched immediately on the television train of thought. “Are you serious? Because-- can I confess something?” He grinned, leaning in toward Justin as not to be overheard.

“I’ve seen that film, like, a zillion times. I practically know it by heart, start to finish.” Rolling his eyes at himself, Wayne sat back and ruffled his hair.

“I don’t have a lot of...hobbies, as such, so...lots of television. Movies. Drove Mam nuts. Probably why she kicked me out.” That, and probably the marijuana. She wasn’t fond of his smoking it, but she’d put his foot down once he entered the distribution market.

He shook his head. “Well, not with me, okay? Please feel free to mention him as much or as little as you want. No judgement here. I mean, who am I to judge huh?” He didn’t pretend that his life was way more in order than Wayne’s. Absolutely not.

“I love movies too. They make a great back-...” His voice trailed off and he cleared his throat. “Anyway, yeah. I like having people around for movies.” Anything except being alone. It usually meant spending way too much time at Finnigan’s or with people in any kind of situation.

“I’m sure there are other hobbies to be had, except work, but reading is the only other hobby I have. Oh and I knit sometimes when I watch TV. Hannah taught me.” He wasn’t much good at it.. yet.

Wayne snorted a small laugh to himself. Of course, when Justin was given the prompt “hobbies,” he would think such innocuous things. Among his - friends was probably the wrong word, so acquaintances - back in Merthyr, Wayne was one of the more straightedge guys. All he did was the mild stuff. Drink, tobacco, pot.

Once with ecstasy was more than enough.

Wayne imagined Justin would never stoop so low as to be on his level. Plus, part of this moving out and moving on thing was to better himself, right?

“My grandmother crocheted, I think.”

“I haven’t tried crochet though.” He hummed and thought of that square he was almost done with and made mental note to do at least a few rows on it. “It’s very therapeutic, actually. And I’m productive while I watch TV so it’s a plus..”

Wayne grinned. “Yeah, I bet you are.” Then he winked before continuing. “I nearly called you out on it when you said you used it for background, so I was going to make the background-noise-during-sex joke, but now I sort of have to make the joke, since you said it makes you productive.”

He winced. “Ok, so my delivery on that was shite. Let’s pretend that didn’t happen and move on, shall we?” And not talk about all the sex that Wayne wasn’t having right now.

“So down to the nitty gritty: of all the stuff to do around here, and all the things that kids our age are doing...where, what events, etcetera...where has the best free food? Or any free food, I’m not that picky.”

Justin’s eyes grew wider and his mouth opened in protest, blushing all the way to the root of his hair. “It’s not.. it’s not what I meant.” He whispered, shaking his head. He was more ashamed of the real reason he was using background noise than the possibility that it was for sex.

“Um, good food? Sweet Nothings is the best bakery ever. They make the best baked goods I know of. And there are a few pizza places around St.Mungo’s too. And before, the food was good here, but Seamus had problems with his cook and things got bad.”

Wayne pondered his food options before his brain raised a flag at Justin’s last point. “You must be one of his regulars, then,” he noted, if Justin was a good enough judge on not just the present food, but the past food as well. And apparently Seamus needed a chef. It was a shame Wayne only knew how to make, like, five different non-McDonald’s-foods.

Then his brain caught up with his mouth, and Wayne grinned. “Or one of his regulars.” Wayne chuckled to himself - there was no way. But it’d be funny.

“Yup, I’m definitely a regular. I’m uh… I’m pretty much always here.” He said with a chuckle, though for some it might sound kind of pathetic. “I mean, I just..” he shifted on his seat and started his second soda. “I like the place and it’s.. it’s never too quiet even when there aren’t any people. Always..” Always a background noise, he almost said, but then Wayne’s last sentence caught up.

His face was already flushed, but it extended to his neck and his ears, though he remained as quiet as possible. “I don’t see what you mean.” But he did and didn’t want to talk about Seamus that way.

Disbelief spread slowly across Wayne’s face - he’d been kidding! But...seriously? Justin and Seamus Finnigan? Where the hell had that come from?

Then, the disbelief shifted to a grin. “Justin Finch-Fletchley, you saucy minx,” he said, slapping a bro-appreciation slap on Justin’s shoulder. “Gettin’ it with a Gryffindor. Who’d have thought.” It was definitely the last thing Wayne would have thought - not that it was a Gryffindor, but...Seamus? That, he hadn’t seen coming. Or, well...thinking back...Justin’s glance had been following him while they’d been there. “Although now that you mention it, it makes a lot of sense.”

So everyone was having sex except for him. Delightful.

Justin shook his head, closing his eyes and sighed. He hadn’t meant to tell Wayne as he viewed his sex life as rather private and usually would prefer not to divulge the identity of his lover even though all of their really close friends knew already. It was a matter of time before everyone knew in Monument Alley.

Anyway, it seemed like Justin hadn’t been as discreet as he’d thought he’d been. “What makes sense?” He asked curiously.

Wayne shrugged, and looked pointedly in Seamus’s direction, then back at Justin. “You two. It’s kind of cute, actually. I see the attraction. Sweet, hardworking Irishman and an undercover-sexy humble posh Londoner. I’d watch that sitcom.”

As long as all the problems were resolved in twenty-two broadcast minutes, like a sitcom.

“Though honestly, I wouldn’t have guessed he’d be into blokes. Not that I knew him all that well, or spent too much time thinking about it, but…” He shrugged, hoping his rambling mouth would stop sooner rather than later. “Is it just my perception or are there, like, a disproportionately huge number of queers in our generation? Probably to make us that much more awesome.” He brushed imaginary dirt off his shoulder.

Justin chuckled. "We're just friends, Wayne." he told him with a smile.

"I don't know about disproportions, all I know is that maybe we're just a bit more accepting." He said, tilting his head. "All I know is that I probably wouldn't be out if I had remained in the Muggle environment I was in." It was still unacceptable for him to be gay in his family's eyes, but he couldn't care less as he didn't need their approval from them.
