RP: Sad Cub
Who: Rose, Dennis and Rolf
What: Comforting a sad cub
Where: Their flat
When: Sunday 14. September, after this
Rating: NSFW - Language

Sunday afternoon Rose found herself curled up in her favourite chair with a big mug of coffee and a pile of travel guides for Greece in general and individual Greek islands in particular. She knew plenty about Greece’s history and could probably recite every single archeologic site in her sleep, but when it came to the best beaches or simply touristy spots in general, she was at a complete loss. Of course, she and Rolf hadn’t set an exact time (or even a timeframe) for when they would go, and though Rose had found the intrigue of not going for work or study purposes, she did want to know where it would make the most sense to get the best of her very first experience as a tourist.

Dennis was angry, hurt, and upset. He'd apparated at Rolf's flat just long enough to hug him and ask him to come over to flat before appearing in the living room. He looked down at Rose who was engrossed in travel guides. Already beginning to cry, he leant down hugged her then walked quickly into his room. By the time he flopped down on his bed, he was crying in earnest.

He had somehow managed to alienate another person and he didn't even know how or why it'd happened. There was something obviously wrong with him if he kept making people leave him, but he didn't know how to fix it. Collin, Paden, now Seamus - all of them had left him alone and it hurt.

One minute Rose was reading up on the Evian beach just outside Hiliadou – doubting that she could ever convince Rolf to go to a nudist beach, but that perhaps Chalikiada on Agistri could be a good secluded area where he wouldn’t have to be too concerned about his scars showing – and the next there was the pop of Apparation followed by a too tight hug and then Dennis walked away before Rose could even mutter a ‘hello’. Dennis had been in a very bad place the past week, at least, so even before she heard the door to his room close, she was out of the chair, her coffee safely on the coffee table and the book left behind.

The sound of Dennis crying had her forego common courtesy as she opened the door, and when she saw him on his bed, she did the only thing she could think: she climbed into the bed, spooning up behind him and wrapped her arms as tightly around him as she could, considering his larger frame. “Hey, leu pui*,” she murmured softly, finding his hand and lacing her fingers through his. She wanted to know what had caused this, but first she needed him calmed down and comforted. Still just holding him, she muttered the same words doamnă Cojocaru had used the first nights she had spent in their mansion in Bucharest; nonsensical Romanian words and terms of endearment.

Leu pui = lion cub

Dennis heard the sound of his door open, and was pathetically glad for Rose's presence. He moved slightly as she lay down behind him and wrapped her arms around him. For some reason this only made him cry harder. As she muttered to him in Romanian, he took long, gulping sobs as a torrent of emotions he'd been bottling up - some of them since his brother's death - came flooding out.

"I'm such a fu-u-u-uck-i-ing fai-ai-lure," he sobbed, utterly miserable. "Why-y c-can't I ev-ver g-get any thing right?"

Rose tightened her arms around Dennis as he sobbed, burying her face in his neck to offer any kind of comfort in the hope of possibly making just a small part of his hurt going away. “Shh,” she soothed, or tried to at least, because as much as it hurt her to see Dennis like this, she knew it had to be hurting him even more.

“You’re not a failure,” she tried, immediately shushing when she felt him about to object. “To me, you’re not a failure,” she amended, because at least from there they could maybe work towards something better, not unlike starting the puzzle of breaking down a Curse. “What happened?” she asked him. As far as she had understood, Dennis was going to a cuddle fest at Finnigan’s, which to her had sounded as comforting and pleasant as anything she could think of, and by no means like anything that could break down Dennis – her big strong Dennis – like this.

Rolf had been in the middle of whipping up a few things for a few of the animals downstairs that needed a special diet for a while, so it had taken him a couple of minutes to make sure he had everything off and taken care of before he could leave. The moment Dennis had hugged him and taken off like that, worry had filled him; his friend was definitely very upset, and he wanted to help. It was imperative, in fact, that he help.

He looked around for his monster cat, thinking it would help, but when a cursory look didn't find her Rolf simply Apparated to the flat and followed the sounds to find Dennis and Rose curled up on Dennis' bed. He didn't hesitate to crawl in on Dennis' other side, long arms managing to go around them both as he snuggled closer to Dennis. "Oh, cubby, what happened?" he asked, eyes meeting Rose's over Dennis', unconsciously echoing her question before he got in there. He nuzzled Dennis' neck comfortingly.

Feeling both his best friends beside him, Dennis felt his breathing begin to come under control. For several more minutes he said nothing, merely allowing their presence to soothe him.

Finally, he let out a snivelling cough and sighed, utterly exhausted. "I was at Finnigan's at the cuddle pile thing, and I was hugging Seamus," he began, proud that he could at least get full words out now. "Anyway, he tickled me and I knocked his shirt up to tickle him back and he-" he paused to take a steadying breath, "He has a scar, and I told him it was sexy and he got really weird, and Susan said that his Wards probably wouldn't let me in and now I've lost another person I'm close to and I hate myself." He blushed, glad that Rolf was still nuzzling him and Rose couldn't see his face. "Who knows, maybe I'll lose you two next. Everyone always leaves me and I can't make them stop," he finished the last word with small sob, pushing back a further flow of tears.

Meeting Rolf’s eyes as he came to lay on the other side of Dennis, Rose sent him a small, grateful smile. Rolf had always been better with these things than she had, and with him there, she thought there actually might be a chance that they could get Dennis feeling somewhat better again.

She listened intently as Dennis finally began talking, gently brushing her nose back and forth against the curls on the back of his neck. With each word, annoyance and anger and disappointment at the supposedly upstanding citizens that had been at that cuddle-thing began growing in her. It was perfectly fine for people not to have their wards set to let in other people, but to humiliate them like this because of what sounded like an honest mistake? That was just not alright! “What an arse,” she growled quietly, then tightened her arm around Dennis’ shoulder.

“You’re not losing us, sweetheart,” she said, wanting to assure him, because short of him hurting Rolf or any other person for that matter, with the intent to do so or him turning out to be a megalomaniac serial murderer, she couldn’t see how they could walk away from him. “You’re his cubby, my leu piu. I wouldn’t know what to do without you, babe.”

"Oh, cubby, you're not going to lose him for that. Sure he might be twitchy but he'd be the worse sort of jerk and friend to do that over a mistake like that." Almost everyone from school had a scar of some type, physical, mental, or both from the war. His hand soothed along Dennis' side before tightening around him. "And you're not going to lose us, I promise. Not unless you start torturing and killing things and the like." Or did anything to Rosie, but that was beside the point. "You have us, don't worry."

Dennis huffed in amusement despite himself. "I suppose he has some sort of issue about his scar, but I agree he was a bit of an arse dealing with it," he said, suddenly feeling a bit irritated.

"At least I've got you two," he said, the nasty tension in his chest lessening somewhat. "People leave me, Rolf," he said very quietly. "My brother, my best friend, my boyfriend - ex-boyfriend sorry - they all seem to leave and they don't come back and I hate it. Why won't they stay with me?" He was shaking again, this time with anger. If Seamus wanted to leave him, then he'd be fresh out of luck. Dennis would be the one to leave this time. "I don't want to talk to Seamus," he said with certainty, hugging Rolf tighter.

Rose drew in a deep breath, her heart breaking for Dennis and everything that had happened to him, the shit the people he had cared so much about had put him through. “Colin didn’t leave you,” she said quietly. “He was unfairly taken from you, but he didn’t leave you, love.” She had never known Colin, only heard about him from Dennis, and Tom and Paden? Lifting her head, she moved until she could rest it on top of Dennis’ shoulder. Slowly her fingers stroked through his hair. “Tom and Paden? The only thing you’re guilty of there, babe, is a case of poor taste, and I think we’ve all been there. They didn’t see what they had in you, and that is their loss, not yours.”

Rolf echoed Rose's words, one hand smoothing and ruffling Dennis' hair idly in turns, the other still wrapped firmly around him. It was natural that he stop and Rose take over with the hair stroking; his hand instead went around Dennis and curved behind her head on Dennis' shoulder. "Collin never would have wanted to leave you," he agreed. "And we've already discussed the arses today, and the plotting shall continue, i promise."

He shook his head slightly and brushed his lips across Dennis' forehead. "Don't make that decision now," he counseled quietly. "It was obviously a misunderstanding, and most of the those can be fixed, even when people are jerks about it." He'd go see Seamus himself if he had to, to make sure where things stood before he sent Dennis in though.

Dennis sighed but nodded, their presence made him feel oddly brave. Before he could think about it, he opened his mouth and began to speak, "I was angry at Colin when he left for the Battle. I'd hurt myself falling from a tree and couldn't come with him, and he said... something. I don't even remember. So I was angry with him, and then he died, and I just kept being angry." He righted his grip around Rolf's waist and burrowed further into his shoulder. "Logically I know that Paden and Tom are dicks, I just... I loved him so much, and he just... I... I opened up to him, and he helped me so much and then," he trailed off lamely.

"But I want to make that decision now," he complained bitterly. "I'm sick of not being able to control anything and I can control this."

Rolf rubbed Dennis' back soothingly. "It's easy to be angry," he murmured understandingly. "But maybe someday you can stop being angry with him." It would take time, and willingness. He simply stated it, not being pushy in the least. "I know, cubby," Rolf said. "But at least you took away those goods things, even if he was a horrid dick and did that to you."

Rolf's eyes met Rose's over Dennis' head. She gave him a small smile, silently passing the conversation to him for the moment. He smiled back softly, fingers of his other hand ghosting over the back of her hair. "Is it really worth abandoning a friendship you've treasured for years?" he said after a long moment of thought. He spoke slowly, in a mild manner. Dennis would probably change his mind in time, but at least he'd give him that much to think about. He nuzzled Dennis' neck again, comforting. He worried because he knew how much Seamus meant to his friend.

Rose was relieved when Rolf simply took over. Her own fingers were still massaging and stroking through Dennis’ hair as she let Rolf’s voice soothe her too. She knew that if she even attempted to speak, she would be counterproductive by railing against Tom and Paden, pointing out how Dennis had been their friend, had loved them, but that it could never have been mutual, because what they had done to him, how they had treated him… you just didn’t do that to anyone, least of all people you cared about… people she cared about.

However, even with Rolf’s soothing words, the sight of her best friends snuggling like that and the calm their little pile exuded, images and ideas of just how to get them back for what they had done to Dennis kept popping up in her mind. Seamus? Sure, he’d been an arse to Dennis today, which wasn’t alright, but it happened, and most likely they could smooth things out, but all he had really done was poke at the insecurities caused by Paden and Tom.
