RP: Birthday drinks
Who: Ginny + OPEN
What: It's Ginny's birthday so she goes to the pub, of course.
Where: Finnigan's
When: Aug 11th 2005
Rating: TBD (knowing Ginny there will be language!)

Turning a quarter of a century old didn't bother Ginny, though she figured from the increase in floo calls and owls from Molly, her was certainly getting to her mother.

She'd woken up to a lovely gift from Seamus, and tea delivered to her bed by Jane before the two ran off to work together. After work, Jane had a date, so Ginny opened the other gifts that arrived via owl throughout the day, and then helped Jane get ready and settled in one of her new books but the quiet of the flat got to her quickly and she stood, determined to do something with herself for her birthday. She threw on a pair of jeans and a cute t-shirt and brought herself down to the Pub for a drink. Even if she ended up drinking alone, she figured being out and about was better than being at home alone.

Ordering a pint, she grabbed a seat at the bar.

Katie hugged Ginny back with a big grin, "the move has been good, Time change has been wonky but it's going well. How are you?" She asked, befoee trying her drink. "That's interesting," she commented about it. "Definitely different."

Gin nodded, "Oh yeah, when the team is traveling internationally, the time change gets me so bad." Having drunk the last of her beer, she looked up with mock impatient look for Seamus, "Oi! Barkeep!" She laughed, but he brought it over with a smile anyway.

Toasting Katie again, she tried her own and grinned, "It's perfect. You know, he makes one up every year for my birthday, I don't even remember how it started, I just know I love surprise cocktails. Probably helps that I'll drink anything with alcohol in it," she chuckled.

"And this one has quite a lot of alcohol in it," Seamus quipped back, leaning on the bar once he'd delivered the drink in question. "Because I know what you like."

He enjoyed his yearly opportunity to make a cocktail where he didn't have to worry about profit margins or popularity. It was only one night, and that fact tended to make people curious - as did the fact he usually went to some effort to make the cocktail look interesting. "So how does it feel to be a year older?" he asked.

Ginny shrugged at his question. "Honestly, doesn't feel any different, but I think Mum might be having a mid-life crisis over it. It's like my moving out and turning 25 has suddenly sent her into the worst spiral of owls, knitting, and floo calls. She's even started sending jumpers over for Jane, poor girl." Gin laughed and shook her head. Sometimes it amazed her that her Mum... mothered the way that she did, considering everything they'd all been through as mere children.

Dean had found a point to pause and hunt food, and thus headed for the pub, coming up behind Ginny as she mentioned her Mum knitting for Jane. "I am offended by that. I went out with you and she never knit anything for me!" he said, sliding in the opposite side to Katie.

"Happy Birthday again, Ginny," he said and then grinned at Seamus too.

"I'll take something non-alcoholic resembling the birthday cocktail and food, pretty please," he said, batting his eyelashes at him ridiculously. "You know what I like."

"What about me?" Seamus asked, echoing Dean's wounded expression. "I'm her best guy friend! Why don't I get a Weasley jumper?" He grinned at Ginny. "Seriously, it sounds like your mam could start a business. I bet enough people saw you and your brothers at school to support it for a while."

Dean's request flummoxed him for a minute and Seamus stood, staring into space. It wasn't an easy cocktail to make a non-alcoholic version of. The ingredients themselves, the flavours... "I can make you something red," he offered at last. "Which will in no other way resemble what I made for Ginny."

Seamus ignored the request for food for the moment, focusing on making a cocktail with raspberries and spicy ginger beer. When he finished, he pushed it towards Dean with a flourish and a mock bow. "There you are, gorgeous. It's nothing like the others, but you should like it." He levitated some food menus from the back bar and let them settle on the table. "Anyone else for food?"

Katie watched the interaction between Dean and Seamus with a grin. "I knew you were close but when did it elevate to some thing more 'official'? I know I was gone several years but I didn't realize I missed something so big."

Seamus flushed at Katie's question. It was far from the first time someone had asked something similar, and Seamus could usually laugh it off. But then, he usually couldn't see where the hell they were coming from. Usually, it was a hug, or an inside joke, and Seamus would roll his eyes and point out that friends did those things all the time. But this? Calling Dean gorgeous, making him special drinks... Seamus could see where Katie was coming from pretty damn clearly.

His gaze darted from Dean to Ginny, neither of whom seemed about to say anything. Seamus's skin felt too tight. He tugged his t-shirt down and forced a laugh - but he didn't know what to say. "We're not," he eventually managed to choke out. "Unless they're giving out certificates for official best friends now."

Ginny held back her choke at Katie's comment, but kept her gaze on Seamus steady. This was for the boys to handle, she knew. When he finally spoke, she smiled as she said, "Oi, what am I? I didn't get an official best gal friend certificate."

And then turned to Katie, "So what about you? With the move and all, anyone caught your eye yet? And speaking of the move - where are you staying?" Hoping to take some of the heat from Seamus and Dean, who had clearly been made uncomfortable by the question.

Katie went red-faced; she hadn't meant to embarrass anyone. She was glad to have the change in subject. "I'm staying with Alicia right now, I'm hoping to have my own flat by the beginning of September though. A bloke here and there have caught my eye, but nothing substantial. Of course, give me another two weeks and that may change,"she said with a grin. "I've applied for a mediwizard position with Tutshill and Falmouth. Who are you with?"

Ginny lit up. "Alicia's house is so beautiful! And to be near the twins all the time! Her beau is my landlord, you know. I'm with the Harpies. This season is my second as an 'assistant coach', finally." She made the finger air quotes around her title, knowing she was mostly doing the same sort of thing she'd done as an admin assistant for the team as she was still the lowest ranking on the staff.

"I'm sure I'll see lots of you on the pitch this season, then," she smiled, nudging Katie with her shoulder. "Seamus! I'm not nearly drunk enough yet, another round?" Her smile turned mischievous. With a conspiratorial look she told Katie, "My landlord's also a brilliant potionsmaster, helps to always have a supply of pepper up and hangover potion right at your finger tips."

Dean had said a quick thanks to Seamus for the drink and taken a sip. Thankfully said sip had been swallowed by the time Katie made her comment. Instead he'd momentarily frozen, eyes slightly wide. He'd just been doing their normal silly stuff, hadn't he? Sure the batting eyelashes was a bit over the top, but Seamus had called him gorgeous. It was all in good fun. Sometimes they did it to mess with people, or they had in the past, but this had just been a good mood making him feel silly.

He was caught up in trying to form words that wouldn't be a lie, but wouldn't betray his feelings and mostly was just sitting there looking a bit dumbstruck. After Seamus had spoken he laughed automatically and nodded, pointing slightly to indicate his thoughts were like Seamus'.

"Oh, yes you have Adrian's other flat, don't you?" he said to Ginny. He sort of remembered reading that, or someone telling him. "He's really good." Not that much of his own experience actually revolved around hangover relieving potions.

He smiled faintly at the two women and examined his menu for no reason other than something to do, chewing his lip absently. He knew the menu pretty much inside out. Nothing was really new and he just muttered his request for a cheeseburger and chips to Seamus. Quidditch discussions sometimes made him feel left out because he only ever got to listen on the radio these days.

"Yeah, he's good at what he does, but I'll admit I don't know him well. I saw his ad for the flat and Jane and I jumped at it," she shrugged. It was her first flat, and was going well enough so far, so that was enough for her.

"He's selling his stuff in some apothecarys now, you know," she had heard.

"So, Dean, when's your next show?" Ginny didn't have an artistic bone in her body - thank goodness Luna was a close friend because she was brilliant at stuff like that - but she did appreciate people who did.

He hummed in agreement, he thought he'd heard that too. "I tend to order direct," he admitted. His order was too specialised generally to be bought in a shop. "He's always been really accommodating." He didn't exactly want to discuss the specifics of his potions regimen with Katie who didn't know the first thing about his PTSD as far as he knew.

He coughed through the sip of his drink hitting the back of his throat when Ginny asked about his next show. "I'm pretty caught up in trying to make my current project work at the moment. You know the nightmare thing? I've been having trouble trying to make my idea work, but fingers crossed I might finally have it. I'm part way through doing a test-run at part size."

"We, er, the studio tries to do one every eighteen months to two years," he said and shrugged. There were no plans to have a show this year which meant he could work on the nightmare project, and it mattered less about his slump after he'd broken up with Ophelia.

Ginny nodded in understanding, "Direct? Me too." And when he described his latest projected her nod got more insistent. "No pressure or anything, but I really can't wait to see that," she gave him a friendly smile, making sure he knew she really wasn't pressuring him.

"Every two years? I'd go mad with the waiting." She said, shaking her head, her eyes wide.

"Yeah, if, when it turns out it should be good," he said, smiling softly. He had great plans and he would get them to work. He hoped.

"Hey, I have to actually paint the things I show, you do realise that, right?" he protested gently. "Plus I sometimes get commissions too," he said. Not quite as many as he'd like, but they helped. So did the wonders of a good budget to spread out his concentrated income over a huge space of time.

Katie listened to the conversation, finishing her drink and ordering another, "I'd go mad trying to draw a stick figure; but I can colour with the best of them, if I say so myself," she said with a mock gloating attitude. She enjoyed being in this company. It was like being back in school.

Dean was drinking steadily, despite the lack of alcohol, trying to distract himself from the fact Katie had thought he and Seamus were a couple. That had been irritating when people thought it and he didn't know about his feelings. Now, he was just realising, it felt even worse.

"Don't underestimate stick figures," he said sagely. It was amazing what you could do with a stick figure if you took your time. Unlike certain friends he could mention who just made them look dirty. "Really though, colouring is great, and not everyone needs to be able to draw. For one thing I'd not be making money the way I do."

For once, Seamus was grateful to have work to attend to. Usually, he left his friends at the bar grudgingly, and handed other business as quickly as he could, while still being friendly. Today, though... Today he was happy to take his time mixing up another round of Ginny's cocktails - and then get another customer their round and have a brief chat - and then nip into the kitchen to fetch Dean his cheeseburger, plus some chips for the others to share.

"Here we go," he announced as he returned, a forced brightness in his tone. "I brought food and booze. Now what're we talking about?"

"Thank you, darling," Ginny said, blowing Seamus a kiss when he handed her another drink. "We were just getting art lessons from Dean," she giggled.

"And I don't underestimate stick figures, though I've seen Katie's doodles back in school and she might be telling the truth," she shot a quick, bright smile at Katie so the joke would be understood.

Katie nodded in agreement, I'd try to copy Quidditch plays... not good. Based on my handwriting I'd make an amazing healer," she said with a laugh, and took one of the chips Seamus offered. "Seamus is amazing."

Dean grabbed his burger and immediately took a huge bite. "Bu' 's jus'," he said, trying to speak with his mouth full and then scowled at himself and chewed and swallowed. "Sorry. I thought quidditch plays were just blobs and lines usually though?" he asked. He'd only been on the team very briefly but he'd seen play boards a few times.

His eyes flicked to Seamus who seemed to be busy doing his actual job rather than chatting very much. Didn't bother him though. He'd mostly come for food. "Also I don't have the patience to give actual lessons. I mock and want to correct everything myself," he said. He may have been known to do that at times unless someone had half an idea of what they were doing.

"I am amazing," Seamus agreed, catching Katie's comment as she took one of the chips. He gave Dean a broad, conspiratorial grin - and then wished he hadn't. Katie did seem to be taking their word for it, which was more than could be said for some people, but still... "If you could pass that on to any of the gorgeous male Quidditch players you end up working with, it would be much appreciated.

He nodded, attempting a serious expression. "He's always been very rude about my attempts at pictionary," he pointed out. "I just make him play charades now, we're at least equally bad at that." As much as they both tended to talk with their hands, you'd think they'd be better - but usually, Seamus was the only person who had a hope of guessing Dean's clues and vice versa.
