London Pride
Who: Lucy and Bryce
What: London Pride
Where: London
When: Saturday 4th July [backdated]
Rating: SFW, there are children present!

It was set to be probably the hottest weekend of the year, and Lucy was dressed for the weather in a strappy tiedye t-shirt borrowed from one of her more crafty friends over blue denim shorts and trainers. She and her sister and their friends had fought their way through the crowd to watch the parade, then slipped back out when they got hungry to look for some food.

They'd separated, Lucy craving something sweet while her friends were on the lookout for burgers and hot dogs. After grabbing and finishing a rainbow-frosted cupcake, Lucy had started walking through the press of people, looking out for her friends. That she couldn't find them didn't bother her. She had her mobile, but it seemed a waste to call them - what would they use as a landmark when they'd all started off on the same street? Instead, she looked around her, soaking up the atmosphere - and the sunshine - until she spotted a man just ahead of her drop a bottle of suncream out of his bag. Before he'd noticed, Lucy had stooped to pick it up and was tapping him on the shoulder.

"Sorry, you dropped this," she said, smiling. "Figured it wasn't the kind of thing you'd want to lose."

"Yes!" Sophie answered, explaining primly, "Aunt Maddie gave them to me." She waved her small arms around, causing the balloons in question to sway above her head. "Are you here for the parade too? I got a new dress just for today! Aunt Maddie gave it to me too, 'cause it's fes.. fet... festive!"

Taking the small break as a moment to reapply the reacquired sunblock, Bryce managed get a some onto his fingers without his daughter noticing. She hated the feeling of it being applied, so he'd learned that the best way to get it onto her skin was by surprising her with it so she didn't have time to squirm away. Grabbing her by the wrist that didn't have the balloons attached, he slathered the lotion across her forehead, ignoring the whine of "Daaaddy!" that this brought about.

"Almost done, princess," he told her, slightly distracted as he made sure to cover her face and shoulders. A few moments later, he stated, "See, all done." Sophie pouted at him slightly, but since his mission had been accomplished, he just smiled at her and ruffled her curls before sliding the bottle into his backpack.

"Thank you, again," Bryce said to the woman as he stood back up, offering her a smile along with the words.

Lucy grinned as the balloons went bobbing and bumping above Sophie's head. "It sounds like your Aunt Maddie has excellent taste," she confided, crouching down to be on eye-level with the little girl while the man - her father, Lucy assumed - tried to sneakily apply suncream. If nothing else, it at least confirmed for Lucy the connection between them. "I'm here for the parade," she agreed. "I came with my friends, but they seem to have walked off." She sounded unconcerned about this fact and touched her top again. "I'm actually borrowing this from my friend Ayesha, she made it."

When the suncream had been successfully applied, Lucy sprang back up to her full, if unimpressive, height. "It's no trouble," she said. "Even if you'd realised you'd lost it - I don't fancy your chances of finding it again in this crowd."

Sophie nodded, watching avidly as the woman came down to her level. "Are you lost? Do you need help to find them? Daddy is good at finding people, he always wins at Hide-n-Seek," Sophie responded, a tiny frown appearing in her eyebrows as she looked up at her father.

"If you hadn't found it, I'm sure it would have been gone forever," Bryce agreed with an easy smile.

"Does he?" Lucy asked, amusement in her tone as she glanced up at 'daddy'. "Is he a better hider or seeker? Cause I'll bet he can't get into all the hiding places you can - he's too big." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, then shook her head. "I'm not lost, and I'm sure they'll turn up again eventually. They're probably just waiting for the bathroom somewhere. I can have fun by myself. It's very kind of you and your daddy to offer, though." She ignored the fact that technically, Bryce's help had been offered without his say-so.

She stood up again, straightening out and looking down at Sophie. "She's adorable," she said, pitching her voice so Sophie wouldn't know she was being talked about. "And I'm Lucy, by the way."

"Yeah!" Sophie laughed at the comment and then nodded, saying, "I always get to hide 'cause I like it best. Sometimes Aunt Maddie plays too and she's even better at hiding than I am 'cause she can be invistible." Bryce managed not to wince at that statement and the magic his daughter was implying, making a note to have a conversation with his sister. But he figured that coming from a child, it would probably be taken with a grain of salt, and he shouldn't be too overly worried about secrecy.

He couldn't help smiling at the compliment, and said, "Thanks. She takes full advantage of that fact whenever she can." Extending his hand, he responded, "Bryce, and the small one examining your shoes is Sophie." His daughter had indeed crouched down to take a closer look at Lucy's shoes, so he bent down to hoist his daughter up, settling her on his hip, where she waved before plopping her head down on his shoulder.

"Wow!" Lucy said, eyes widening. "She can be invisible? That's one talented aunt!" She had spent so long disconnected from the magical world, and so little expected to encounter it here of all places, that it never occurred to her to wonder whether the statement was more than childish make-believe.

Lucy laughed. The multicolour etnies she wore were part of her usual wardrobe, not in anyway specific to Pride. "Aren't they great?" she asked, modelling them cheerfully. As Sophie was lifted up, Lucy returned the wave. "Hi Sophie!" The two looked very sweet together. "Sorry if I've kept you from anything," she added as an afterthought.

Bryce shrugged with the shoulder that didn't currently have his daughter's head resting on it, and said with a smile, "Nah, we're just wandering at this point." He probably should start thinking about finding his sisters again, but it wasn't quite late enough to be worried about leaving just yet, so they had sometime before that was really a necessity.

"Daddy," Sophie interrupted, poking him in the face just in case her voice wasn't enough to get him to turn his attention back to her. "Can we have hot dogs now?"

Looking at his daughter a little wide-eyed, Bryce stated, "You just had ice cream like, half an hour ago. How are you hungry again?!"

"Because I'm a growing girl," she answered immediately, in the tone of voice that meant she was repeating something she'd heard someone else say, and he couldn't help the sigh or the slight shake of his head, smiling at her in amusement.

Lucy nodded her understanding. "Me too," she agreed. "It's a good place to wander, and nice weather for it." She stopped as Sophie demanded her father's attention, smiling to herself at the demand. She could just about remember being that kind of child herself, though occasions where she'd been treated to both ice cream and more substantial food out at 'overpriced' stalls had been few and far between. Her mum had always been one to pack snacks for them - with four daughters it was hardly surprising.

"I think I saw a truck back that way," she said, shrugging one shoulder in the direction she'd come from. She hoped Bryce would take her meaning - she didn't want to explicitly say 'hot dog truck' in case he were planning on navigating Sophie away from the idea. On the other hand, she happened to know where hot dogs might be obtained and she liked being useful.

Looking back at Lucy when she provided the information about the location, Bryce nodded slightly as he said, "Thanks." He knew they'd probably end up heading that way - unless it was an outrageous request, he tended to give Sophie what she wanted, and yes, he was fully aware of how tightly she had wrapped around her tiny fingers. "So you're really hungry now?" he asked his daughter, who nodded emphatically with a smile. "Well, in that case, it would seem we're going in search of food. It was lovely to meet you, Lucy, and thanks for everything."
