Who: Charlie & Theo
What: Another bout of somnambulism
Where: The streets near Wingbeat
When: Late Saturday night
Rating: R - language, mentions of bad things

Things hadn't been going too badly for Theo lately, so he was due for a setback. He'd moved out of the hovel he'd been in before to take over the room offered to him by Milly, looking after his friend's house while she was away, and that alone had helped him feel a lot more settled. He'd been unsettled with the situation with Greg and the idea of anything happening to his friend in the same way that something had happened to him had made him sick to his stomach and had probably kick started his latest bout of insomnia. His paranoia had been higher than usual, although he hadn't realised it. He hadn't been able to sleep very, well too keyed up to relax and plagued with shapes and shadows that moved in the corner of his eye but weren't there when he turned to look, voices that spoke to him nonsensically that stil managed to make him feel threatened.

He'd been up for three days by the time his body finally called it quits and he more collapsed down and lapsed into unconsciousness than fell asleep. It wasn't a restful disappearance from the conscious world at all though and he was up and walking around in a bout of somnambulism like he hadn't had since the previous year. It led him to wander around Milly's house, mercifully avoiding tumbling headlong down the stairs, and out into the night dressed in soft black pyjama bottoms, a heather grey hoodie and nothing else, his feet bare against the floor and bleeding by the time he'd made it from Milly's into town. He wandered like he was high or drunk, bumping into objects and rebounding off them from time to time, his tearing feet leaving little footstamps of blood in his wake.

There was no rhyme or reason behind his sleeping decision to make his way towards Charlie's club, unless his sleepwalking worked on some weird remembrance of the last place he'd Apparated to. It hardly mattered where he was physically though, as in his mind he wandered through the halls and corridors and rooms of the Nott House, made even more monstrous and dark in his dreams as they had been in reality, looking over his shoulder in utter sweat-soaked terror for the man who had tyrannized him in childhood and could strip him of any feeling of security even now. Even as he stumbled down the nearly empty street towards the club he still looked over his shoulder like he was being pursued.

As was usually the case Charlie was the last out of the club. The last of the other staff had left once the takings were counted and stowed in the safe. Since Gringotts didn't open on a Sunday and he'd need money to make the floats for the various cash drawers Saturday generally wasn't a depositing night. Someone would supervise those being set up the following night so he had a record of it all and the balance could go in the overnight deposit on Sunday.

By the time Charlie had pulled his long coat back on and set the inside wards he expected the street to be empty as it usually was at gone four on a Saturday night or Sunday morning if you preferred. At first he thought the street was empty and began to set the wards, but a noise distracted him. It didn't sound like the expected rats or cats, but a soft sort of thump. He finished the spell he was working on automatically and looked around. He didn't see anybody though and continued with the layers of protection. Then the thump came again and he spun around. That time he spotted the figure over on the far side of the street almost lost in shadows and clothing that blended with them.

"Oi, are you okay?" he called, assuming it was a drunken customer of either his or Seamus' who had got turned around on their way hom.

Theo didn't hear the voice call out to him, but something in his subconscious slowly let it soak in and his fretful movements slowed to a groggy stop. He wavered on his feet, his even if quick breathing coming ragged and more panting now as the shadow of horror that had been stalking him was suddenly given time to catch up. He startled after a delay between Charlie's shout and hearing it, falling back against the wall and from there to the floor, his feet not holding his weight on them anymore. He cowered, scrambling back without able to get his feet up under him, the whimpering he was suddenly vocalising getting louder.

"Not tonight, not tonight, just one, please!" he begged, pleading mercy from the merciless, knowing enough to not ask for it to stop, knowing that was an impossible request. He struggled a moment before he slowed to a stop, sitting upright, propped on his arms and slipped somewhere back between asleep and awake.

The figure seemed to react on a delay, which was certainly what a drunken someone would do, but the other reactions weren't really in line with it. And then he, or at least Charlie thought it was a male figure, did a slide-fall to the floor. "Ah, shit," Charlie muttered. He needed to help whoever it was.

Then he heard the words that were being said and more than that the tone that they were said in, and instead of finishing the last two spells as he'd intended he immediately left his usual spot for warding and took several strides across the Alley. That was when he spotted the bare feet, eyes tracing back the specks of blood the way the man had come. That wasn't good.

He was fairly sure it was a man now, even if he was still slightly caught in shadows. He kept his wand out as he carefully lowered himself to one knee, prosthetic on the ground, good leg supporting and ready to push up if necessary. "Hey, can you hear me, are you okay?" he asked, casting a Lumos that he could easily cancel if he needed his wand. That was when he recognised the face of the young man who had helped him a few weeks ago, and that he didn't seem to be awake, that he'd contacted a few time since. "Theo? Theo, can you hear me, it's Charlie Weasley." He didn't reach out a hand, still a couple of feet away, but he was within a distance where he probably could if he wanted to.

Theo didn't flinch when Charlie came close, when the wand was lifted up towards him and that alone showed he wasn't aware of his surroundings. He twitched a little when Charlie first spoke and when the light of the Lumos lit him up his pupils responded but the rest of him didn't. He wavered a bit when his name was spoken, the sound of his nickname not belonging in whatever whenever hell he thought he was in, his full name not even belonging there. His dad had called him a number of things, 'You' 'Child' and more frequently, 'Boy', but never his actual name.

He still moaned in his half-asleep state, the throbbing in his feet not registering just yet but the real world filtering in, if slowly. He whimpered and turned his head from the light, lifting a hand to guard himself and wincing like the observation was hurting him.

When the light hit Theo's eyes and he didn't react in more than his eyes Charlie frowned. Clearly he wasn't really awake or aware. Probably not awake actually, which probably explained the bare feet. And shit. He couldn't remember what the ideal thing to do with someone sleepwalking.

Then Theo turned his head from the light and Charlie thought he might be waking. "Theo," he said again, a bit louder, lowering his wand slightly to get the light out of his eyes. "Theo you need to wake up." He had the vague sense that touching someone sleepwalking might be a bad idea.

While Theo didn't react to the first call of his name, the 'wake up' seemed to hit somewhere briefly. He froze like a rabbit in the headlights, his breath coming just as fast and shallow and then looked around himself, squinting out at Charlie and then looking at his surroundings, clearly bewildered. He didn't seem at ease by the fact that he'd woken up though and as he looked back to Charlie the panic that had been there while he'd been asleep flooded back up. He forced himself to his torn feet and staggered to grab Charlie's sleeve, making as though to tug him further down the street. "We have to, we, he, he can't be far behind." he panted in sheer terror, awake but confused by the clinging memories of the nightmare he'd been trapped in.

Charlie was sort of startled when Theo woke up, especially because he didn't seem to quite be taking in his surroundings. Or at least he wasn't reassured by them. He still seemed to be caught in some sort of nightmare or imagined horror. When Theo stood and grabbed at Charlie's sleeve he winced. He had to brace his leg to get up. "No, Theo, it's okay. We're safe here. We can go into the club if you want. But whatever I need to get up carefully," he said at a rush, keeping his hands out of the reach of Theo and bracing them on his good knee so he could put all of his weight through it to stand. It only took a few seconds, but it was quite possible that it was far too long for the agitated Theo, but once he was up he was stable and took a pace to join Theo. "You're safe here," he said, looking carefully at Theo's face, trying to meet his eyes despite the somewhat dim light (most of the shops having put out their lights for the night and the street-lighting being limited in their little end of the Alley) in the shadow of the opposing building.

As confused and semi-lost in a flashback as he was, it was Charlie drawing attention to his injury that finally cut through the fog in his head and woke Theo up. He immediately let go of Charlie's sleeve and reached a hand out like he could somehow help Charlie get up without touching him, watching the red-head stand and worrying at his lip, awake but apparently not immediately enough as he didn't realise the pain in his feet or really pay attention to where he was. He walked alongside Charlie in something like a daze, like someone who had just suffered an epileptic fit and was pulling their mental blocks back into line.

He full out shuddered at what charlie said, catching Charlie's look and immediately ducking his head after contact was made. "What are you doing here?" he asked, dazed but then stopping to take stock. "What am I doing here?" he corrected.

Charlie was thankful Theo didn't actually try to put hands on him to help him get up. For one thing he'd become pretty stubborn about his independence most of the time, but mostly people always seemed to try and help in the wrong way. Although Theo had been helpful when he'd made an arse of himself and fallen over before so perhaps it wouldn't have been a complete disaster. Still, in this state Charlie was glad he'd stepped back.

When Theo shuddered he looked at him carefully and saw he was seeming to come back to himself more. "I've just closed Wingbeat up, I was setting the wards," he said, deciding to answer the question asked even though Theo had corrected himself. "I'm not sure why you're here. I think you sleepwalked. Although I don't know how or how far that is. I think your feet are bleeding," he said, the last coming out gentle and uncertain.

Theo didn't even know what time it was, nevermind where he was, looking across the street to the club; well that made sense as to Charlie's whereabouts, but his? Charlie thought he was sleepwalking - well fuck. He shook his head, not in denial of what Charlie suggested but at himself for doing this again, the sleepwalking that had caused a few accidents involving the moving staircases while he was at school, but then looked down at his feet when Charlie directed his attention there as though he still couldn't feel them.

"Oh." he said softly, leaning his weight to one side as he tried to look at the sole of his bare foot which was indeed torn up and leaking fat weals of blood everywhere. His toes were blue and white too - he hadn't even felt it. He felt around for his wand and he was more distressed at the fact that he didn't have it on him than the fact that his feet were in tatters. "I don't have my wand." he said plaintively, not a little panicked.

Charlie winced when he saw the paleness of Theo's foot and the bright blood against the flesh. Then Theo began to panic about his wand and Charlie automatically reached out, not touching him, but placating him. "Okay, okay. Look, I have a basic healing kit and a floo connection inside if you want. I mean nothing else is going to be open now, unless you want me to take you to St. Mungo's," he said, casting around even though he knew it was pointless. He didn't know Theo well and Merlin only knew if the skittish young man trusted him enough in an empty club. He would happily fire call somebody for him.

Theo didn't so much flinch from the outreached hand as physically recoil, something he'd later berate and hate himself for but that at the moment he just couldn't help. He might have been awake but the thing that had been hunting him in his dreams haunted him in real life and had been a very real monster to him in the past - a hand reaching for him now, even to help, even at a distance, just set him off like a fly-bitten horse. He couldn't take a breath that wasn't short and he was more concerned with the lack of his wand and therefore the lack of protection than the state of his feet, which was nothing new if he was going to be honest.

He calmed a little when Charlie spoke to him though, because he knew that voice and it was pitched so he could trust it. He was speaking logic and nothing he said was threatening, except maybe for the part about St Mungo's - he shook his head because the last thing he wanted to do was go back there and be locked away and drugged to the gills again (even if it was arguably something he needed). He wrapped his arms about himself in some poor kind of comfort or defence and nodded. "I, okay, I don't want to go to St Mungo's. I'll come with you, I'll be good." he promised, that last part falling from some dark infected place in his head and out of his mouth without permission.

When Theo recoiled Charlie did too, snatching back his hand and taking a step back. Clearly that wasn't welcome at all, and he vowed to keep his hands to himself until Theo invited anything else. "Okay, okay, I'm keeping my hands to myself," he said, placing the hands on his hips to try and keep them in check.

At least he seemed to calm a little when Charlie spoke and Charlie sighed in internal relief. He wasn't looking forward to trying to help Theo if he was quite so scared. He could only imagine that he was scared of whatever nightmare had been haunting his disturbed sleep, but that was of little comfort. He nodded in acknowledgement that Theo didn't want to go to St. Mungo's. "Okay, no hospital," he said, and stepped carefully to the side and around Theo. "Can you stand there while I drop the wards I'd put up?" he asked. Honestly the comment about being good made him feel desperately uneasy, but he decided it wasn't the moment to pick up on it. He took the few steps back across the street to the position where he set the wards, and felt them crackle across his skin as he stepped inside, slightly unusual because he'd stopped part way through. He took a moment to check in his mind exactly where he'd stopped and carefully reversed the wards. It took perhaps a minute at the most and then he turned to Theo and offered him a careful twitch of the mouth that was the start of a smile. "Okay, it's safe to come in now. Do you want to follow me?" he said, gesturing to the door.

"Bollocks to that, if you couldn't stand it's no bother to me. We keep everything clean, and you sure as fuck aren't the first person to end up sitting on the floor outside the loos," Charlie replied, waving away Theo's protest.

Theo was scared of something, Charlie could see that. Human behaviour was surprisingly similar to animal behaviour in many ways and he could sense the timidity and fear coming off him in waves. Not that he thought of Theo as an animal, he was just far more used to studying the behaviour of animals than that of people. The stammering just seemed to confirm his thoughts and Charlie was making extra sure to move clearly and carefully.

As Theo lifted his feet he gave them a quick look by tilting his head to the side, and assessed the sort of thing he might need. It was pointless him sitting just yet when it was a bit of a bugger to get up and down on the lower stool. Doable, and easier than sitting or kneeling on the floor, but not his first choice usually. Even if it was the best solution for this situation.

He stood while he opened the box of healing supplies and searched through it. A lot of it was anti-nausea type potions, but he knew there were also cleansing solutions and bandages too and he located them quickly, and set them on the desk closer to Theo. He frowned at the box, removed the upper layer and made a pleased noise when he found some salve that should start the healing process on the cuts Theo had made. It might even close the smallest ones up. He didn't want to use his wand on Theo himself if he could help it given how nervous the use of a wand seemed to make him.

"Okay," he said, once he'd gathered all the supplies he thought he'd need. "You don't have any allergies do you? Have you use these things before?" he asked, showing the various potions based items to him. They were all bought from reputable potions shops and clearly labelled. He'd even managed to find ones that were still sealed in the box, even if there was another already open. He thought it might be sensible somehow. He could put a note in for the staff to let them know which to finish first and when he'd opened them.

Theo wasn't used to such a reasonable attitude towards things that didn't really matter, especially not in his current mindset, and Charlie's ease with his actions in turn put Theo a little more at ease. He didn't even realise that Charlie was moving around him with such care but he did notice how much more comfortable he felt in Charlie's presence, even if he didn't know why. He was very awkward about letting someone else tend to him like this, or show him any care, and the unusual situation seemed to have him hold his tongue.

Nothing could stem his curiousity though, though his father had tried his best to do so, and Theo watched attentively while Charlie sorted through the first-aid kit. He looked through the selection of healing things and shook his head. "No allergies. I've used all of these before, they're all okay." he confirmed with a slightly shy smile of reassurance. "Thanks for doing this." he said again, like his gratitude was all mixed up with his surprise and kept leaking out now that his defenses were lowered by his previous sonambulism. It was clear that he had no idea what to do in this situation.

Nodding quickly Charlie gathered up the items and set them on the floor where he'd be able to reach them, the clean bandages and cloths on a piece of parchment rather than directly on the floor. "You're welcome," he said, wondering faintly just how many times he'd be thanked for basically being a decent human being. Then he carefully lowered himself to the low stool, taking a few seconds to arrange his legs in a way that wouldn't be too hard a twist on his prosthetic and eventually settling to have that leg as if he was kneeling and then doing the same for the other after trying it curled in front of the stool. It served its purpose though, and brought him to a height where he could tend to Theo's feet without so much bending and discomfort.

Unfortunately he had ended up sitting in his own light and he sighed. The only thing he could really do was use wandlight and that was such a helpful option when with someone who seemed to dislike others using magic. "Okay, I can't see so well, I'm going to have to light my wand and stick it in my mouth," he said, resigned to the fact. He didn't want flames near Theo's feet and all other options left him without two free hands, which he needed.

He pulled out his wand again, incanting the lumos aloud for once and stuck the handle between his teeth before picking up a cloth and the cleansing potion to clear the dried specks of blood and whatever dirt had got into the cuts on Theo's still bleeding feet. He carefully touched the top of Theo's left foot to indicate he would be starting there, the right hand side as he saw it. He held the first cloth under Theo's heel and let a careful dribble of the solution wash over the foot, working from the big toe outwards. Some of it also ran down the front of Theo's foot and Charlie swore through his mouthful of wand, trying to catch the drips which went further back than he had anticipated.

Theo felt terrible about putting Charlie in this position. He could see that it had to be uncomfortable for the older man but the apologies that wanted to come out felt rude and insulting to Charlie as though he was incapable.

He nodded to Charlie as he stated that he was going to use his wand, not really thinking about it apart from the fact that the wand would be coming out again. He watched as Charlie did as he said and was going to say something but his attention was diverted from the wand by Charlie reaching out towards his feet. He didn't jump at the touch that let him know that Charlie was going to start there, but it might have been better if he had.

He watched the trickle of liquid run down his foot and his mind saw something entirely other than the healing potions. The drip seemed red, everything seemed red, and wherever he'd been in his mind while he'd been asleep came back to him. He didn't realise when his breath came short and in little panting snips, when his face went white and he started to tremble. His lips moved but nothing came out until a little mumble, barely audible. "-be good-" A wince and then "I've been good, not, just one night, just one, please, just one, I've been good!" he ended with a plea that sounded like he didn't expect to be heard.

Charlie glanced up with concern when Theo's breath started coming shorter. He didn't ask him to stop and it was important that his feet were cleaned and healed as well as possible before he went home. He didn't hear the first murmur but the second one registered thanks to the distress and he snatched his hands away, jerking back. His mouth also opened in surprise and his wand clattered to the floor. It went unheeded though as Charlie tried to move back slightly and make sure he wasn't touching Theo. Whatever those words meant to him he could tell it wasn't good.

"Theo," he said softly, having no real clue how to help.

If Theo was aware that Charlie had pulled away from him he didn't show it. If he was aware of anything going on in the real world outside the phantom one he was seeing in his head he didn't show that either. He couldn't look away from the drying drip on his foot and his toes didn't so much as twitch while the rest of him shook. He was curling into himself, elbows drawn in until he was almost hugging himself but then Charlie paused his flashback or waking nightmare with the call of his name.

He paused like a rabbit that had just heard a fox, twitching a little as the last trembles worked their way out of him. He teetered on the cusp of awareness and in a blink he was back in the room, a little detached but not as distant as he had just been. He looked up from his foot at Charlie like he was waking up and looked around warily. "Sorry... sorry, what did you say?" he asked, as though Charlie had asked him something he hadn't quite heard instead of losing time for a moment.

Charlie was helpless in the face of the shaking young man before him, repeating his name softly, not sure whether it was better to startle him out of whatever reaction he was having or let it run its course.

Then the choice was taken from his as Theo came back to himself more. "I... I was just saying your name." He hesitated before continuing. "I think I lost you there for a second or two," he said tentatively, looking somewhere around Theo's shoulder rather than his face. "Um, would you feel more comfortable cleaning your own feet?" he suggested gently. "I never actually asked. I can always check them out to make sure they're properly clean."

Theo looked confused at hearing that but he was worried by the fact that his distance had been so notable that Charlie had been able to pick up on it. He worried about what he'd done in those lost moments because now Charlie couldn't look at him and didn't seem to want to touch him either.

He looked down at his drying feet and didn't look back up again. "I don't mind." he said quietly, adding, "I can do it though, if you'd rather." he offered. "I'm sorry." he said at the end, the shame thick in his voice.

Charlie took a breath and focussed back on Theo's face. "Okay, I'm going to be a bit blunt, because it's late and I'm pretty sure both of us would rather be at our respective homes not in my office." His voice was still kind, but it had a slightly firmer tone than it had earlier.

"You started to, I don't know, shake when I was cleaning your feet. I thought it was something I'd done which prompted it. Even if it wasn't you might be more comfortable doing what part of the process you can and I didn't ask that, which is probably because I'm used to animals and they're generally pretty shit at letting me know, and frankly have fuck all other options. So. I'll happily clean your feet, put on the salve and bandage them up, but if you'd prefer to do any of it yourself you need to say and I can just check to make sure it's all clean and covered.

"You should absolutely feel free to tell me I'm being a dickhead, but like I said I worked with animals for thirteen years and I wasn't the one with full healer training for when something went tits up." His voice had become a little louder and he deflated slightly with a sigh. "Just," he shrugged slightly. "Just tell me, okay? Shit, you can floo home right now if you like." It was easy to tell he was getting tired, as the slightly instinctive cap he'd kept on his swearing began to wear out. Not that he said anything in a harsh way, just that he naturally swore rather a lot.

Theo nodded, thinking the worst for what was about to come, not because he thought Charlie was someone who would do that but because he thought he deserved it. He flinched when Charlie told him exactly what he'd looked like freaking out; he couldn't really remember it but he'd been told about it before and it went against everything his dad had ever beaten into him about keeping up appearances. He'd stood tall on broken bones before just to be taught a lesson by his dad about stoicism, but when his mind seperated off into chunks and puppeted him he couldn't control anything about himself and that made him feel helpless.

He felt bad about making Charlie feel like he'd somehow been at fault for Theo's own defectiveness, so he opened with, "I'm sorry. It wasn't anything you did, you're not a, a jerk. It isn't your fault and I'm sorry I've put you to all this trouble. I'm, I'd appreciate it if you could bandage my feet up. I'll be good now. I'll be good." He promised.

He had a nasty feeling he'd hit something raw or missed his mark somehow, somewhere. Theo always seemed so...small, and not just because of his size, but because it was like he was trying to hide away into the background maybe. Another animal behaviour he recognised. Well, in that case the only thing to do was gain trust, and he didn't actually think he was doing terribly there.

"Okay, well, I'm going to clean your other foot, then I want to put on the healing salve. It probably won't get everything, but the smaller cuts should close up and it'll help keep everything clean. And then bandages," he said, even as he began to pick the cleansing potion and the cloth back up. He thought maybe he should just keep talking, maybe that would help, plus a little more speed and a little less worrying about getting his floor wet.

As he cleansed he began to talk, wand inserted behind his ear instead of in his mouth this time. "I have a cat called Echo," he said. "He's a bit of a menace at times but I actually adore him anyway. I gave him his name because when I got him as a kitten he'd follow me around every time I was at home and squeak at me every time I spoke no matter whether it was to him, or my flatmate, or just talking out loud to myself. When he was still fairly small I hadn't got all the protective spells up around the flat, or got used to renewing them to negate whatever the fucking cat effect is where they just waltz through wards sometimes, and he managed to get into my wardrobe. And what did he decide would be an excellent claw sharpening thing. Did he choose the wardrobe where the only person to see it would be me? No. No he did not the little bastard. He decided that my dress robes would be a perfect thing to tear to pieces. And then he managed to pull them down and get stuck underneath him. The tiny meows were so helpless and indignant. He pretended it had never happened and I had to borrow robes from one of my brothers when I got invited to something that required them," she said. He finished up the second foot then and brought his wand closer to check as he dabbed some last fluid from Theo's feet.

"Okay, salve next," he said, wiping his hands off and reaching for the tub. "I'd forgotten it was that colour," he said, looking down at the pastel orange salve with a frown.

If Theo had only known he would have reassured Charlie that, considering he'd been only semi-awakened from a nightmare he'd experienced before being half-carried to this room and then letting himself be put in a vulnerable position out of necessity that the man was doing unspeakably well. It was hard not to hit a raw part of Theodore in any interaction with him, not when his psyche felt flayed, but in a situation like this where Theo was like a wounded animal caught in a trap Charlie couldn't really avoid doing so. The fact that he still had Theo there and aware was a small miracle in and of itself.

He nodded that he was listening and that he understood, watching Charlie work silently, trying to keep his stupid panicked reactions under control. He realised he wasn't having to try very hard actually, and that his attention was truly more on what Charlie was regaling him with than the work on his foot. He loved that name for a cat, seeing a teasing, frustrating note in it that he saw in the very animal itself, but the specific creature sounded like the kind of cat Theo wouldn't be able to keep away from. He told himself that he wasn't allowed animals ever since he'd 'killed' the rats, but a large part of him had always been drawn to animals ever since the Thestrals and despite his dad's best efforts and he couldn't help being drawn in to Charlie's tale.

Charlie was a lively and engaging storyteller and Theo actually found himself not laughing but chuckling a little - his foot had been tended to before he knew it, and not because he'd lost time this time around.

"It's okay, I'm sure it'll do the job." Theo assured, neverminding the pastel orange. His feet were still and he hadn't flinched or twitched back since Charlie had started telling his story. "I really appreciate everything you're doing for me." he said, just another way of saying thank you that he couldn't seem to stop himself from saying.
