Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: blaise zabini, character: bryony capper, character: lucy spinks, character: marietta edgecombe

WHO: Marietta, Lucy, Dominic, Angie, Aidan, Richard and OPEN to observers
WHEN: Saturday May 16th
WHERE: Courtyard at Finnigan's
RATING: SFW- Will change if necessary

Marietta looked around at the set up. Dominic had set up three distinct courses that were layered in height. When they finished each course Marietta would banish the lower one and the next would drop down to the playing level, approximately 5 meters off the ground for the barrel and poles while the steeple chase varied in height from 10-15 meters with alternating over under obstacles. Once those three were completed she had a charmed stuffed sheep ready to release for the roping, one for each participant.

As time for the start of the event neared, she was smiling broadly inside. Marietta wasn't sure if there was a better turn out because word had gotten out about the success of the previous event or if it had been the pull of the playoff match which would follow the next day. Either way, she was glad that everything was lined up and the participants and audience seemed ready for a night of fun.

Blaise had pondered signing up when he saw the advertisement for the event. He hadn't flown in awhile and while he thought it might be fun there was no way he was opening himself up right now for public humiliation. He made a mental note to get up on the broom that was sitting in his closet as soon as he could find an opportunity.

So instead of actively participating, Blaise now stood off to the side watching to see who was brave enough to undertake the tasks that were to be set before them. Glancing around his eyes met up with one of the women who was preparing herself for the first round. "Good luck," he raised his glass to her.

"Thanks," Lucy said as she lifted her hands to twist a hairtie around her ponytail. She didn't want her hair flying in her face and distracted her as she tried not to fall off the broom. "I think I might need it." She didn't mind not being perfect, she didn't even mind losing - but to go first and risk completely embarrassing herself by not even being able to fly made her feel like she was back at school. "Any tips for a novice?" She didn't know who she was talking to, and whether he was any good at flying himself, but he looked vaguely familiar to her and at this point she'd take any help she could get.

Blaise couldn't help but watch as her hands twisted her hair up. The way the strands fell through the process was mesmerizing. Ever since talking to Pandora about his fears he'd done his best to look at women as women again instead of potential agents of lies.

As she changed her focus from her hair back to the conversation he turned to glance at the set up that had appeared for the first task. "Don't fall off," he joked. It wasn't so high as to cause much damage but high enough that a mis-timed tumble could hurt.

Distracted as she was by her own nerves, Lucy missed the look Blaise was giving her, something she wouldn't normally have done. She chuckled, but took the advice in good humour. "Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that." She smiled, then glanced back at the brooms, wondering whether she could have a quick test, just to make sure she could make it fly. If she couldn't, would it be less embarrassing to quietly withdraw?

She shook her head slightly, scattering the doubts. If she'd learned anything in her years away from Hogwarts it was that confidence was key. If she went in expecting to fail, she would. If, on the other hand, she went in expecting it to be easy she might find that it was after all. "Not racing?" she asked, gesturing to his drink.

Blaise was about to excuse himself as she turned her attention to the brooms so as not to distract her. He was taken aback slightly when she turned back and asked about his level of participation. "Work schedule's been crazy," he stated taking a swallow. "Didn't know until just now whether I'd make it here today and it seems the sign up has already closed." She didn't need to know he had no desire to attempt something so closely related to Muggles that he had no working knowledge outside of the mechanics of a broom.

Lucy's expression was sympathetic. "I'm sorry," she said. "I know how you feel - I started a new job... a couple of months ago." She felt very much like she'd lost all track of time since moving out of her shared house in Tufnell Park. Had it been one month? Two? More? "It's been crazy. I get two days off a week, in theory, but they're not always the same days, and I work with people in different timezones so sometimes I have to start early or late to accommodate them."

Realising she was babbling she shrugged. "Sorry. I talk too much when I'm nervous. I'm Lucy, by the way." She held out a hand to him, grateful to him for distracting her at least a little from her nerves.

Blaise's job tended to be fairly predictable. However, these new ideas coming in often took a little longer to go through than normal meaning he'd had some late nights. Luckily he hadn't had to give away a weekend unless he'd absolutely wanted to. "I think I could handle random days as long as I had some say in which ones they were each week."

"No reason to be nervous," Blaise stated taking the hand that was offered. "Blaise and I'm sure you'll do fine."

"Oh, I do," Lucy said. "As long as Rich, Millicent and I aren't all off at the same time, I can take the days I want, mostly." Since Millicent and Rich had both been there longer, Lucy was still letting them pick their days off first, and picking up her own where-ever they would fit. "I still pick weekends when I can, though. It just matches up with everybody better."

She grinned at him, his name ringing no bells despite the fact they must have shared classes at school. "Nice to meet you. So, what do you do that's been keeping you so busy?"

"You work with Millicent," Blaise said with a nod sealing the connection. He had been a horrible friend as of late and hadn't spent the time with her he needed to. Hell, he hadn't spent the time he needed to with anyone. "We've known each other for years.

He looked over at the other participants who were getting ready and sort of wished he'd been able to sign up. "They're still working on creating my new title and finalizing my responsibilities but for now I'm in charge of deciphering and developing ideas for new Gobstones and creating workable viable prototypes and creating the legal specifications for their inclusion in league play." It was a lot and he was trying to figure out exactly what it all meant. It was funny how exhausting something that was predominately mental could be.

Lucy nodded. "I don't know her well yet," she said. Apart from their shopping trip and lunch, she hadn't really spent much time with Millicent - and she got a feeling the woman didn't like her, but she wasn't going to hold that against her friends. "At least, I assume it's the same one. Millicent Bulstrode?" Millicent seemed the right age to know Blaise, so it seemed unlikely they were talking at cross-purposes, but you could never be sure.

Lucy's expression as Blaise explained his job was somewhat skeptical. "That sounds like your official job description - what do you actually do all day?" She worked through what he'd said in her own mind before taking her best guess. "You... collect ideas for Gobstones and improve them, help get prototypes made by whoever does that kind of work and then figure out whether they're going to be a complete nightmare to use fairly in a competition?" She had only the vaguest idea what Gobstones were, never having had time to play. They were like marbles, she knew, and they made a mess sometimes. "Do you enjoy it?"

Blaise hadn't thought to clarify the last name as he knew Millicent was working with Summerby. "Yes, it is the same Millicent," he acknowledged Lucy's question.

He chuckled slightly at her rendition of his job. "I suppose you could explain it that way as well. But as far as how it's done. Mostly completing paperwork which can be rather boring unless one of the prototypes creates an interesting scenario." He'd actually made the mistake early on of filling out papers on the same table he was testing on. Needless to say he'd lost a whole days worth of notes when one later in the day caught the whole stack on fire causing him to repeat every test again the next day.

"So that's a 'no' to enjoying it..." Lucy said, never one to beat around the bush too much. "That's a shame especially when you're working with a game! It should be fun." It didn't sound like it was likely to pay particularly well, either, but perhaps Blaise didn't mind. Lucy wanted to be passionate about her job - but she knew not everyone was the same. "Do you have other hobbies?"

The room was growing more and more crowded, and there seemed to be a hush falling - suggesting the broom events might be about to begin. Had it been anything other than flying, Lucy would have bid a hasty goodbye to Blaise to present herself as ready and raring to go. Instead, she hung back - at least long enough for him to answer the question.

Blaise had taken the position because it had been what he was offered when he applied at the Ministry. His mother had made a point of telling him that even the smallest job within the Ministry was worth his time and he had supposed it true. Besides, in this new day and age it was believed that good work would pay before status. That meant even if he had to start in the dregs he may find himself further up the chain later in life.

"Flying," he said nodding toward the starting spot. "And it seems you ought to get to it."
