Who: Bryony and Marcus
What: Flying!
Where: Flint Manor
When: Sunday, March 8 2005, early afternoon
Rating: These two are always gong to be SFW

Perhaps one of the good things to come from his mother being admitted to St. Mungo's was that Marcus didn't need to scout out a place for Bryony to fly with him, or worry about charming them so that they would be unnoticed, the way they'd done during their childhood. The acres surrounding Flint Manor gave them more than enough privacy, and the only ones who knew what they were doing were the house elves, so Marcus wasn't worried about any repercussions from Bryony's mother discovering her hobby.

Standing on the front lawn at their appointed time, he was trying - and failing - to get Rakey to stop fussing over him. Only after a few long minutes spent reassuring the elf that he was in fact eating and sleeping on a regular basis did she leave him to his own devices. Shaking his head with a fond smile, Marcus looked up at the sky, tracing the clouds and watching the leaves on the trees dance with the wind. There was s light breeze, but it was warm enough that he didn't think they would experience any difficulties - all in all, a perfect day to be on a broom.

Marcus immediately smiled at Bryony's appearance, pleased as always to see her. He was a little surprised by the hug, but wrapped his arms around her without question at the gesture. Their upbringing meant that these sorts of displays of affection were few and far between, but he was always happy to provide them when needed. "Hi," he said back, the words slightly muffled by the face that his face as pressed against her hair.

Allowing her to pull away, he answered, "I'm good. How are you?" That was a far more pressing matter in his mind, with the sudden realization of the date and what that must have meant for Bryony - he'd known her sibling's birthdays for as long as he could remember, a leftover from the days when he thought their futures were always going to be intertwined.

Smiling again, Marcus nodded as he agreed, "I'm ready for some warmer weather." He too had dressed for comfort, thicker robes for protection against the chill of the air once they were free from the ground.

Hugs from Marcus, rare or not, always made her feel better - reassured that someone, at least, would always be there for her, to protect her. She smiled, probably more brightly than she had in weeks. "Better now. I was at home from Friday afternoon." Shauna, unsurprisingly, had not been content with a single day of celebration. Friday night had been a party for her friends, which Bryony had mostly managed to slip away from, but Saturday had been 'family time'. Marcus knew what that meant for her. "Flying should help even more."

Bryony knew that the Arrows had lost - even though she'd been at home, she'd managed to sneak a look at the sports pages of the Prophet. Still, Marcus seemed in better spirits than he usually was after a loss. Perhaps he was just putting her first. She tied her hair up into a single ponytail and then was basically ready. "Ready to go?"

Bryony had always been the most comforting presence in his life, and it had long been understood between them that he would do anything to protect her from whatever he could. "I'm glad to hear it," Marcus said, though internally he grimaced at the thought of Bryony having to endure an extended period of time with her mother and sisters. That was the one thing he wasn't capable of keeping her safe from, no matter how much it bothered him, but he smiled at the mention that flying would help her mood, which was unsurprising.

Stepping away as she fiddled with her hair, Marcus grabbed both brooms from where they were leaning against the door. Bryony's had been residing in one of his closets practically since she'd moved to London, so he'd grabbed it before making his way here. He was using one of his own older ones, not the one he used professionally - that stayed at the stadium for practices and matches only - but it was a trusted favorite that he didn't get to use as often as he'd like. "Ready whenever you are," he answered with a grin, holding out her broom in offering.

Though she knew she hadn't brought anything with her, Bryony still checked her pockets one last time for stray sketches or pencils before she reached out with a smile to accept her broom. The wood gleamed in the sunlight and the bristles were neatly straight and even. She narrowed her eyes up at Marcus. "Have you been maintaining it?" She was almost sure it hadn't been in this good condition last time she'd dropped it off at his flat, if only because she didn't really have anywhere she felt confident spending that much time with her broom in her lap without the risk of someone walking in. "You know I don't leave it with you so you'll take care of it for me." She was smiling, even as she asked, though, because she'd never take even the smallest chance of hurting Marcus with a rough word. Not that he was so easily hurt, but she knew she was lucky enough to have a special place with him and she would not abuse that.

With a gesture, she set the broom to hovering beside her; she hadn't needed word or wand for this particular magic for years. She mounted easily, her sensible flat shoes skimming the grass before she allowed the broom to carry her higher - putting her about eye level with Marcus for once. "Are we going anywhere in particular?" She knew Flint Manor and its environs nearly as well as she knew her parent's property, and she and Marcus had a few secluded spots in each that they'd used to hide from her sisters in.

Chuckling at the look she gave him, Marcus made sure she had a firm grip on the handle of her broom before releasing it, smiling a little wider at her words. "And you know that I'm never going to let a broom in my possession fall into disrepair - especially yours," he answered teasingly. Aside from his obsession with all things flying, it had always been unspoken between them that he would take care of anything he could on Bryony's behalf, and something as simple as broom maintenance wasn't exactly a hardship.

He waited until he was sure Bryony was completely steady before climbing astride his own broom, hovering a little closer to the ground to help compensate for their difference in height. "I was thinking maybe down towards the pond," Marcus said with a shrug. "But it's really up to you. Where ever you'd like to go is fine by me."

"Some things never change." They hadn't even got going yet, and already Bryony was forgetting the half-dozen subtle little barbs her mother and Shauna had spent the weekend laying for her. Her hair and her clothes and her weight mattered enormously to her family, but they didn't matter to Marcus - nor to Braith and Dean and Ophelia at the studio. She just needed reminding, sometimes.

Without answering, Bryony nudged her broom upwards and took off into the air, leaving Marcus behind with a rare laugh. In a serious contest there was no way she could outrace him - he was the better flyer, with the better broom - but with a head start she could enjoy trying. She waited until she was up above the topmost point of Flint Manor before she levelled off, pausing to enjoy the view. She had mixed memories of this place. For Marcus it hadn't been the happiest place to grow up, but for her anytime she'd been here she'd been to see him. Knowing Marcus would catch up if she reminisced for too long, she turned away from the house and sped up again.

Bryony's laugh made Marcus grin - it was a sound he didn't hear nearly often enough, and he was always happy when she was happy. He let her pull away, following at a slightly slower pace, content to let her lead but close enough that he would be nearby in the event that anything unfortunate happened.

He barely glanced around once he cleared the roof - things were mostly the same as they'd always been, the trees a little taller than the last time he'd seen them, but nothing jarringly different. Seeing Bryony take off, he chuckled again, making sure to keep her in sight as he followed. Though they both knew he was more than capable of overtaking her, Marcus didn't feel the need to - as in most things, she was the only exception to his usual competitive streak, and even as children he had allowed her to best him in these sorts of things.

"Do you have a destination in mind, or will I find out where we're going when we get there?" he called out, still teasing, though his voice was pitched a little louder to carry, though by no means near his typical bellow on the Quidditch pitch.

Seeing that Marcus wasn't even trying to overtake her, Bryony slowed. Even with Marcus, raising her voice didn't come naturally, though she was better with him than anyone else. "I'm just looking around," she said. She still intended to head towards the pond eventually, but she didn't want the flight to be too short. It wasn't often she got to fly with her friend, let alone do so openly without worrying about being caught. She turned a quick circle, just because she could, robes fluttering out behind her.

"This is nice," she added. She didn't want to think too hard about the advantages of Philipa being in St Mungo's - it felt selfish - but this was definitely one of them. "We should do this more often. I know you're busy..." She smiled and gave a slight shrug. She couldn't resent Marcus having so many demands on his time - not while they were things that made him happy.

At a more sedate pace - though with more ups and downs than were really necessary - Bryony started to make a path towards the pond. "How's training been?" she asked.

Marcus nodded with a smile at her explanation, saying, "Look as much as you like. We've got all the time in the world." That was not necessarily true, but at the same time, he'd known he was devoting this day to Bryony since they'd managed to find the time to do this, so he wasn't worried about having to be anywhere else.

Mimicking her shrug with one of his own, he said, "I can always make time for you though." While he was certain she knew that, it was one of those things that he didn't mind repeating to make sure she didn't forget. As many things as he had going on, Bryony was still one of the most important people in his life, and he wasn't afraid to remind her of that.

Pulling up so that they were flying side-by-side, Marcus chuckled at the question. "Intense," he answered. "Maybe a little more than usual, what with coming back from break and the slump we've gotten ourselves into." Thinking of Quidditch and the Arrows made his thoughts turn to Roger, and he got the same small smile and giddy feeling in his chest that he had for the past few weeks whenever the younger man entered his thoughts. He wanted to tell Bryony about that development in his life, but he didn't even know where to begin, let alone how to say it in words, and could only hope that something would come to him before they parted.

Once they reached the pond, Bryony circled over it lazily, looking down at the way the sunlight reflected off the water. She'd always loved reflections of light on any surface, it was why so many of her portraits were painted landscapes, it was the only medium she was yet able to get even a glint of that in. Not wanting to land yet, she made sure she was steady on her broom and then slipped her wand from its pocket, conjuring a small stone that she dropped down into the smooth surface of the water to watch the way the ripples broke out until they reached the very edges. As she often did, she wished she could paint from the back of a broomstick, but it just wasn't feasible and she preferred not to paint from photographs unless there was no other option.

Looking up, she caught Marcus smiling - she assumed it was at her. "I wish we could stay here all the time." Marcus was so lucky, to be able to spend hours on a broom with training as a legitimate excuse. She knew he worked hard, that it wasn't all pleasurable or easy, but she also knew that she'd have been just as willing to work hard and put in long hours if that career had been open to her - and if she'd had any natural talent for physicality. "Did everyone come back from the break in good condition?" Though she'd read the results of the Arrows match, she hadn't been able to listen to it live the way she liked and so wasn't even sure who had played - except that Marcus obviously had.

Smiling at her enjoyment, Marcus slowed near the outside of her circle, close enough to hear but far enough to not be in her way. "It is nice," he agreed, and though he no longer felt like a broom was the only place he was comfortable, it would always be the first place he'd felt like himself, rather than a reflection of his parents, and he could understand the sentiment.

With a shrug of his shoulders, he answered, "For the most part. Podd and Moore are alternatively not aggressive enough, or fighting over which Bludger each is going to take care of. It's taking us a while to find our rhythm again, which is what I think is causing the slump." Pausing for a deep breath, Marcus continued, "There was something I wanted to tell you though." He still wasn't sure of exactly how to share his news, but he did add, "It's nothing bad," because he didn't want Bryony to worry as he attempted to find his voice.

Marcus's hesitation caught her attention and she looked up from contemplating the water to examine his expression. Before she could ask if anything was wrong, he reassured her - but his words didn't completely answer her unspoken question. It was unusual for Marcus to weigh his words so carefully when they were alone, though she'd seen him do it any number of times when they'd still thought they would marry and he'd been invited to Pineview Hall for dinner with her family. He didn't look upset, though, more confused.

"Is it good then?" she asked, hoping to make it easier for him to say whatever it was that needed saying. She didn't need to remind him that he could tell her anything - he knew it. Had done for years, just as she had known she could share anything with him. "Should we land for a bit?" It wasn't as if he were having to shout to be heard, but Bryony didn't know what else she could do to help, except wait.

"It is," Marcus answered, "Good." He hadn't struggled for words like this with Bryony since... Well, since the last time they'd had a conversation along these lines. He shook his head in response to the question about landing - he would never dream of depriving her time on a broom, and it wasn't as thigh this was going to be any easier on the ground than it was up here.

Taking a deep breath, he steeled his nerve for a moment before speaking. Truth be told, he couldn't say exactly why he was so nervous - it wasn't as though Bryony was going to judge him, and this wasn't going to be a huge surprise to her. "I'm sort of.... Dating Roger?" The statement came out sounding like a question, his own disbelief that the situation was actually happening that way coloring his words.

Bryony wasn't as surprised as she might have been. When Marcus paused even before agreeing it was 'good' she'd had a moment's memory of the look on his face as he'd searched for words to explain that he was never going to be interested in women. "Dating?" That surprised her - he hadn't even mentioned he was interested in anyone. Not that she had any reason to except that he would, nor would she have been likely to mention such a thing to him if there situations were reversed.

"Roger Davies?" She knew of him, of course, though she'd been kept far enough away from Marcus's career that they'd never met. She thought she'd seen him in Finnigan's once or twice, but she'd never have approached him on what little connection they had. She frowned a little. "Sort of?" She hadn't meant to pepper him with questions, though that seemed to have been the way she'd worked through the information for herself. With more information still missing than he'd actually provided, she didn't know where to start. It was the 'sort of' that was bothering her, though, and she frowned, obviously concerned. Marcus deserved someone who would date him properly - if that were what he wanted.

Marcus couldn't quite stop the wave that briefly crossed his face at the question before nodding slightly, the gesture accompanied by a quiet, "Yeah." This was why he'd been so nervous - he had no idea what Bryony was thinking, and he hoped that this wasn't going to put any strain on their friendship. While she'd been aware of his preferences, perhaps there was a difference between hypothetical thoughts and the reality of his choice in this, and he was suddenly terrified that she was going leave.

He nodded, looking down at the ground and feeling his face flush, even as he felt the usual fluttering in his stomach at the just the man's name. Marcus was well aware just how head over heels he was, he didn't need the constant reminders, especially when he still wasn't entirely certain of the situation at hand. He didn't have nearly enough courage to look over at the final question, instead following her lead from earlier, conjuring a small rock to skip across the surface of the water. "I suppose there isn't really a 'sort of' about it, and it just is, but... I don't exactly have a frame of reference for all this," he answered quietly, unsure if any of his response actually made sense. With a small shrug of his shoulders, he added, "It just seemed important to let you know."

At first, Bryony didn't know what to make of Marcus' response. He had never mentioned Roger to her in anything other than a professional capacity, but if they were dating presumably Marcus wouldn't have agreed to it if he didn't like him? She edged her broom over to his, dropping a few inches so she could look up at his face.

Years of experience with not only Marcus but his family - and hers - finally gave her a hint towards understanding. It must be incredibly difficult to go against what he had been raised to believe was right. She'd always admired that about him, and it had been one of the things that had given her the courage to send her portfolio out and to defy tradition in her own small way. "If it makes you happy, I think that's wonderful," she told him honestly. She watched him, still concerned, because he didn't seem all that happy right at this moment.

It had been a number of years since he'd experienced this sort of tightness in his chest, but Marcus could recognize the crushing anxiety of something about to go terribly wrong in a heartbeat. He had some trouble meeting Bryony's eyes, scared that he would be seeing any sort of rejection there, and if that were the case, he'd have no idea what to do with himself.

But that didn't seem to be present, and Marcus found himself smiling tentatively at the comment. "It does," he admitted quietly, though he was certain she would be able to read the naked honesty in his tone. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
