rp: the wind under our wings (or something like it)
Who: Bryony and Marcus
What: Flying!
Where: Flint Manor
When: Sunday, March 8 2005, early afternoon
Rating: These two are always gong to be SFW

Perhaps one of the good things to come from his mother being admitted to St. Mungo's was that Marcus didn't need to scout out a place for Bryony to fly with him, or worry about charming them so that they would be unnoticed, the way they'd done during their childhood. The acres surrounding Flint Manor gave them more than enough privacy, and the only ones who knew what they were doing were the house elves, so Marcus wasn't worried about any repercussions from Bryony's mother discovering her hobby.

Standing on the front lawn at their appointed time, he was trying - and failing - to get Rakey to stop fussing over him. Only after a few long minutes spent reassuring the elf that he was in fact eating and sleeping on a regular basis did she leave him to his own devices. Shaking his head with a fond smile, Marcus looked up at the sky, tracing the clouds and watching the leaves on the trees dance with the wind. There was s light breeze, but it was warm enough that he didn't think they would experience any difficulties - all in all, a perfect day to be on a broom.

Marcus's hesitation caught her attention and she looked up from contemplating the water to examine his expression. Before she could ask if anything was wrong, he reassured her - but his words didn't completely answer her unspoken question. It was unusual for Marcus to weigh his words so carefully when they were alone, though she'd seen him do it any number of times when they'd still thought they would marry and he'd been invited to Pineview Hall for dinner with her family. He didn't look upset, though, more confused.

"Is it good then?" she asked, hoping to make it easier for him to say whatever it was that needed saying. She didn't need to remind him that he could tell her anything - he knew it. Had done for years, just as she had known she could share anything with him. "Should we land for a bit?" It wasn't as if he were having to shout to be heard, but Bryony didn't know what else she could do to help, except wait.

"It is," Marcus answered, "Good." He hadn't struggled for words like this with Bryony since... Well, since the last time they'd had a conversation along these lines. He shook his head in response to the question about landing - he would never dream of depriving her time on a broom, and it wasn't as thigh this was going to be any easier on the ground than it was up here.

Taking a deep breath, he steeled his nerve for a moment before speaking. Truth be told, he couldn't say exactly why he was so nervous - it wasn't as though Bryony was going to judge him, and this wasn't going to be a huge surprise to her. "I'm sort of.... Dating Roger?" The statement came out sounding like a question, his own disbelief that the situation was actually happening that way coloring his words.

Bryony wasn't as surprised as she might have been. When Marcus paused even before agreeing it was 'good' she'd had a moment's memory of the look on his face as he'd searched for words to explain that he was never going to be interested in women. "Dating?" That surprised her - he hadn't even mentioned he was interested in anyone. Not that she had any reason to except that he would, nor would she have been likely to mention such a thing to him if there situations were reversed.

"Roger Davies?" She knew of him, of course, though she'd been kept far enough away from Marcus's career that they'd never met. She thought she'd seen him in Finnigan's once or twice, but she'd never have approached him on what little connection they had. She frowned a little. "Sort of?" She hadn't meant to pepper him with questions, though that seemed to have been the way she'd worked through the information for herself. With more information still missing than he'd actually provided, she didn't know where to start. It was the 'sort of' that was bothering her, though, and she frowned, obviously concerned. Marcus deserved someone who would date him properly - if that were what he wanted.

Marcus couldn't quite stop the wave that briefly crossed his face at the question before nodding slightly, the gesture accompanied by a quiet, "Yeah." This was why he'd been so nervous - he had no idea what Bryony was thinking, and he hoped that this wasn't going to put any strain on their friendship. While she'd been aware of his preferences, perhaps there was a difference between hypothetical thoughts and the reality of his choice in this, and he was suddenly terrified that she was going leave.

He nodded, looking down at the ground and feeling his face flush, even as he felt the usual fluttering in his stomach at the just the man's name. Marcus was well aware just how head over heels he was, he didn't need the constant reminders, especially when he still wasn't entirely certain of the situation at hand. He didn't have nearly enough courage to look over at the final question, instead following her lead from earlier, conjuring a small rock to skip across the surface of the water. "I suppose there isn't really a 'sort of' about it, and it just is, but... I don't exactly have a frame of reference for all this," he answered quietly, unsure if any of his response actually made sense. With a small shrug of his shoulders, he added, "It just seemed important to let you know."

At first, Bryony didn't know what to make of Marcus' response. He had never mentioned Roger to her in anything other than a professional capacity, but if they were dating presumably Marcus wouldn't have agreed to it if he didn't like him? She edged her broom over to his, dropping a few inches so she could look up at his face.

Years of experience with not only Marcus but his family - and hers - finally gave her a hint towards understanding. It must be incredibly difficult to go against what he had been raised to believe was right. She'd always admired that about him, and it had been one of the things that had given her the courage to send her portfolio out and to defy tradition in her own small way. "If it makes you happy, I think that's wonderful," she told him honestly. She watched him, still concerned, because he didn't seem all that happy right at this moment.

It had been a number of years since he'd experienced this sort of tightness in his chest, but Marcus could recognize the crushing anxiety of something about to go terribly wrong in a heartbeat. He had some trouble meeting Bryony's eyes, scared that he would be seeing any sort of rejection there, and if that were the case, he'd have no idea what to do with himself.

But that didn't seem to be present, and Marcus found himself smiling tentatively at the comment. "It does," he admitted quietly, though he was certain she would be able to read the naked honesty in his tone. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner."
