RP: Dean tends the bar
Who: Dean Thomas, OPEN
What: Tending the bar, talking to customers?
Where: Finnigan's, The Common Room
When: Wednesday Lunch/Afternoon
Rating: SFW

Dean idly wiped one last bit of the bar and looked around. Nobody was heading in his direction, it was all incredibly quiet in fact. He sighed and pulled out the stool that Seamus kept behind the bar, sliding it to an open gap and pulling out his notebook and sketchbook.

He sort of hoped nobody came in wanting food. Seamus hadn't found a new chef yet and food was a bit cobbled together at the moment. Although at least it was being cobbled together by people who could actually cook. There just tended to not be a huge amount of some of it.

Flipping open his notebook he contemplated the things on his to-do list. There wasn't anything he could really do from here, so he slipped the book back in his pocket and opened his sketch book and grabbed his pencil, flipping through a few pages before deciding to add to a rough drawing of Ophelia he'd been poking at on and off.

They'd planned a day together, she and Matthew, to picnic and relax. She'd packed a hamper and dressed for the seaside, meeting him at the door with a blanket over her arm...

He'd met her with a somber look and a suitcase. Apparently there were a myriad of reasons that they shouldn't carry on in this relationship, all of which were news to Mandy. Not that she'd believed them incredibly serious but she had grown very fond of him and believed he felt the same. Clearly she had been mistaken. He gathered the things he'd been keeping in her flat, packing them as he explained that his career was much more serious than she could know, being a halfblood, and that he really needed someone at his side who could be the supportive partner he deserved.

What?

She stared after him as he left, wondering for a moment why she felt more irritated than heartbroken, trying to find the sadness she was sure she should feel. But really tjere was only anger. Anger, and the need to not be here wondering what the hell had just happened.

It took only a minute to find her walking through Finnigan's to perch on the closest barstool. "Hello, Dean. Can I get your biggest glass of something white, please?" There were certainly more potent drinks than white wine, but today probably wasn't the time to explore them.

Dean had looked up at the door opening, slightly surprised to see Mandy in the middle of the day. She looked, well, not happy. He tucked his pencil in the page and set his sketchbook aside.

"Hi Mandy, just a sec," he said, standing and grabbing one of the largest wineglasses and heading for the chilled white wine. He took at glance at her on the barstool and wasn't sure if he should say anything. But then he glanced at the wine he was just pouring. "How are you today?" he asked, slightly tentative, not sure if he wanted to ask, or if she wanted to talk.

He finished pouring the wine and brought it over to her.

How was she?

"Do you want the casually polite answer? In which case, I'm Fine with a capital F." She accepted the glass and took a long sip of the chilly wine, then sighed.

"Or the truth? Which is that I'm incredibly irritated and can't figure out why I'm not crying, since Matthew just showed up at mine and packed his things. Maybe it's because I'm more furious that he said I couldn't possibly understand how serious his career is, nor could I possibly be supportive enough of him while he pursues it." She took another long drink before setting the glass down.

"So. How are you ?"

Dean opened his mouth to reply, then Mandy continued after she had finished her mouthful of wine. Then he wasn't sure quite what to say, at least not to comfort her.

"Oh, I'm so sorry. What it completely out of the blue?" He wasn't sure if she wanted to continue talking but he could at least give her the opportunity.

He settled back on his stool and shrugged. "Oh, not so bad. Quiet day." He gestured around the pub, where only a few people were scattered. "Getting some sketching done, you know."

"Quiet is good, right?" She ignored his question for the moment, focusing on the quiet pub and the good wine. And sketching. "What's your subject? Something from memory, I hope? Not that Finnigan's isn't a fine thing to sketch..."

"Yeah, quiet is good. At least for me. It's why I do mostly daytime shifts." He shrugged. He did come into the pub at busier times, and occasionally he worked them too, but he preferred it when it was quiet.

He gave a surprised little laugh. "Yeah, not that I haven't done a fair amount of sketching the pub, or the patrons, but this one is from memory." He paused, slightly embarrassed. "We, er, got a new artist at the studio to fill the space for the guy that moved down to the coast to semi-retire. So I've been drawing her on and off. I'd already started it, but a bit of shaping and shading from memory won't hurt."

"That's kind of amazing. That you cam just take paper and a pencil and make art. I mean, so people know what it's supposed to be. I could draw someone but they'd be just sticks for legs and arms and a big round head." She smiled, sipping at the wine again, noting that the level had dropped quite a bit, and made an effort to slow her sips.

"Are there a lot of artists at the studio? Do you do portraits, like proper ones for the wall and such? Or more landscapes? I've neen looking for a painting for my room. I'd love a great meadow with wildflowers..."

"Yeah, I'm lucky, I've always been pretty good, but I just drew all the time and got better and better, and then two years of apprenticeship really forced me to hone all my skills." He took a sip from his own glass of juice which was hidden behind the bar.

"At my studio there are four of us over two floors. We share the space and the rent on this old warehouse with amazing light. Braith and I paint, Cadmus is a sculptor," he made a face at Cadmus' name, he didn't like the man no matter how famous he was, "and Ophelia joined us just recently. She makes jewellery and other things from porcelain." His face softened again as he spoke about Ophelia and lit up when he turned to talking about his own work. "I do a lot of portraits, figurative things, anything with people in it really. I love all the different ways people can look, and how lighting changes the way someone's face looks, and the bright colours people wear. Just trying to capture someone's essence on paper, or canvas..." he trailed off, realising Mandy probably didn't want him to babble on about art when she was clearly asking polite questions.

He cleared his throat. "Braith, er, she was my mentor, she does some landscapes, more than I do anyhow, but she likes to put really odd things in them. If you're looking for calming or something it's probably not the way to go. We, er, we all take commissions though, if you have something specific in mind." He added the last bit hesitantly, scratching his head with discomfort. He wasn't exactly comfortable promoting himself or the studio at random like that, much as the guaranteed money from a commission would come in handy.

"I saw an exhibit once, and they had portraits by several different artists, all of the same woman. It was really interesting, the different things they all saw in her face, and her shape. How they could all be looking at the same person in the same light, and see so many things..."

Mandy leaned on the bar, intrigued by the idea of customised artwork. "I've got a quilt that my Grandmother made, with these soft, old colours. I keep thinking it looks like a field with flowers. I'd love something that brought those colours out, you know? Little bits of colour..." She sighed, wondering if she was making sense, then picked up the glass and finished off the wine. 'If that's even something you could do? I'd love to come see the studio, though..."

She had a bit saved aside; maybe it was enough for a little indulgence.

Dean smiled, having seen similar displays. "I know the sort of thing you mean, I did some exercises like that during my apprenticeship, with Braith and I drawing or painting the same thing or person. Even if you have a similar style to others there's always something different you see."

He couldn't quite picture what she meant about the colours and the quilt, but he was happy to talk about the idea further. "I, well, I don't quite get what you mean, but I'd be happy to make an appointment with you. You could come to the building, bring your quilt and see some of my work and discuss it further. I, er, I don't really let people in my studio itself, but there's a meeting room we can use." He felt a bit awkward mentioning his studio being out of bounds, but apart from a few friends and Braith he mostly didn't like others in there. It was a space he considered safe and he didn't want to risk that.

"I, er, I probably have a card here somewhere, oh, just a moment," he said, glancing up from patting his pockets to see a man approaching the bar from where he'd been sat in a corner.

He served him quickly and wandered back over to Mandy. "Would you like another?" he asked, indicating her empty glass.

"Oh, no, that's fine... It's like a shop, right? The public places in front, with parts just for the artists in back. I wouldn't want to spoil the magic of the artist-space..." She watched him move to serve another patron, and contemplated the glass, nodding when he returned and questioned her.

"Yes, please."

She looked across the pub, taking in the few people scattered about. "And it was," she said softly, as if the change in conversation hadn't ever happened. "Out of the blue."

"Oh, er, yeah, basically." He busied himself refilling her wine glass as he continued. "At least for me. I know Braith lets some clients in. Personal preference I guess."

As Dean set her glass back down again he began to rummage through is pockets, looking for the smart parchment squares which functioned like business cards. He knew he had a couple tucked away somewhere.

He stopped his searching and looked up as she spoke again. "Oh, I'm so sorry Mandy. And he just turned up and told you couldn't and wouldn't know how to support his career right. Gave you no chance to talk?"

"Since I'm a halfblood, I couldn't possibly understand how serious his career could be. You know, being less-than-perfectly magical myself..." She rolled her eyes as she picked up the glass, but didn't drink right away.

"Oh, he gave me plenty of chance. But everything I said, everything I asked, he responded as if I were three. 'Oh, Mandy, aren't you silly...' I could have hexed off his head with a smile on my face, but really, what would have been the point? Azkaban for him?"

She took a sip, then another. "So the really weird part is? I'm less upset, and more angry. He has no idea what sort of support I could be, which is oddly enough, more fine the more wine I drink. And I think that might just have something to say about the relationship we actually had."

Dean listened to her talk, his own track record with relationships rendering him pretty useless on the advice front. He was also pretty irritated on her behalf.

"I don't really know what to say, I mean I guess it's good you didn't hex him, but if you want to call him really mean names I'm happy to listen." He sat back on his stool and grabbed his own glass.

"You're entitled to feel however you like though. That much I do know." Therapy had definitely drilled being allowed your own feelings into him.

"The best really mean name I can come up with is 'idiotic asshat' and I think that means... I'm really beyond caring. Does that mean I didn't care as much as I thought I did in the first place?" She sipped at her wine, contemplating the idea, and mulling over her lack of heartache.

And decided that it must mean exactly that.

"So. How I feel is... stupid that I wasted my time and cooking, really." Mandy lifted her glass to Dean with a small smile. "So. To being smart and single."

Dean sipped his own drink and shrugged. "Maybe it does. Maybe it will hit you later, who can say. But this is better than being sad, surely?"

"Well, I'm not sure about smart, but I'm single," he said, and raised his own glass to her. "And wasting good cooking on someone just feels really unfortunate."

"But if he thinks you wouldn't support him, wouldn't understand because of your blood? It's like muggle society condemning me for my skin colour."

"Smart enough to recognise waste of good cooking." She smiled and raised her glass again, then sobered.

"You'd really think that the world could move past things like these. Colour, and blood. Human is human. Magic is Magic. Maybe one day the whole planet will wise up. Think so?"

"Merlin, I hope so. I get it from both directions. Skin colour from the muggles, blood status from the wizards. Yes it means my experience is different, but it doesn't mean I should be treated differently. That there should be different rules," he deflated slightly and sighed.

"Not my favourite topic, endlessly frustrating and the progress seems about as fast as a snail that's half asleep." He gave her an apologetic smile.

"So, apart from the breakup how are you?" he asked, hoping to shift the topic a bit.

Apart from that... She considered as she nursed the wine, slowing deliberately. "I'm okay, I think. Always busy at the clinic. There must be something in the water lately. I've got four patients expecting twins; it's some kind of record. And rearranging my flat, and now, thinking about a landscape for my room."

She paused, then nodded. "I think I'll survive."

"Twins!" The thought was terrifying to him. "I have little sisters, two of them, but two babies at the same time if flipping horrifying. I only remember the younger one being born really, but it seemed like a lot of work. Best of luck to all of them. Mind you I guess you're not the one taking care of them."

"Oh, yes, the landscape. Hang on." He shuffled through his pockets again and then remembered where he'd put his business slips. He pulled out his notebook with a pleased smile and opened the back cover. There were several pieces of smartly printed parchment there, a communal effort by the studio so they all had similar designs. "Here, if you want to get in touch to discuss it, this has the floo address and who to direct your owls to."

"I can't even imagine two at once," she agreed with a laugh, shaking her head. "Can't imagine one of my own, but it's fun seeing the new ones with their mums..."

She took the little slip of parchment, reading the printing and then tucking it carefully away. "Thanks. Matt... he thought it was silly, the idea I had... Since I've only got a couple windows, I imagined a seascape, mountains, a meadow... all the views I could have spread through the flat. Looking at the same thing all the time is sort of boring, really."

She finished off the wine and set the glass aside; two was probably enough. "But count me definitely interested."

" That sounds great. Of course that's the beauty of magical art. No need to settle for one thing, it can be ever changing. Like I said Braith has more landscape experience than I do, but either or both of us would be happy to meet you."

He gestured to her empty glass. " Are you done?" He asked.

She considered the glass, then nodded, pushing it across the bar. "I think I'd better be, or I'll forget how to Apparate home. And Flooing under the Influence is something that should definitely be against some sort of law. No telling where you might end up."

She offered a faint smile, and found that it felt a little more real than she'd imagined it would.

"Thanks though. For the wine, but mostly for the ear." She glanced at her watch, then dug in a pocket for coins and laid them on the polished bar. "Think I'm going to treat myself to a new book and maybe something from the sweet shop, and distract myself from the rest of my day off, but I'll definitely come see you at the studio soon."
