RP: Dean tends the bar
Who: Dean Thomas, OPEN
What: Tending the bar, talking to customers?
Where: Finnigan's, The Common Room
When: Wednesday Lunch/Afternoon
Rating: SFW

Dean idly wiped one last bit of the bar and looked around. Nobody was heading in his direction, it was all incredibly quiet in fact. He sighed and pulled out the stool that Seamus kept behind the bar, sliding it to an open gap and pulling out his notebook and sketchbook.

He sort of hoped nobody came in wanting food. Seamus hadn't found a new chef yet and food was a bit cobbled together at the moment. Although at least it was being cobbled together by people who could actually cook. There just tended to not be a huge amount of some of it.

Flipping open his notebook he contemplated the things on his to-do list. There wasn't anything he could really do from here, so he slipped the book back in his pocket and opened his sketch book and grabbed his pencil, flipping through a few pages before deciding to add to a rough drawing of Ophelia he'd been poking at on and off.

"Oh, er, yeah, basically." He busied himself refilling her wine glass as he continued. "At least for me. I know Braith lets some clients in. Personal preference I guess."

As Dean set her glass back down again he began to rummage through is pockets, looking for the smart parchment squares which functioned like business cards. He knew he had a couple tucked away somewhere.

He stopped his searching and looked up as she spoke again. "Oh, I'm so sorry Mandy. And he just turned up and told you couldn't and wouldn't know how to support his career right. Gave you no chance to talk?"

"Since I'm a halfblood, I couldn't possibly understand how serious his career could be. You know, being less-than-perfectly magical myself..." She rolled her eyes as she picked up the glass, but didn't drink right away.

"Oh, he gave me plenty of chance. But everything I said, everything I asked, he responded as if I were three. 'Oh, Mandy, aren't you silly...' I could have hexed off his head with a smile on my face, but really, what would have been the point? Azkaban for him?"

She took a sip, then another. "So the really weird part is? I'm less upset, and more angry. He has no idea what sort of support I could be, which is oddly enough, more fine the more wine I drink. And I think that might just have something to say about the relationship we actually had."

Dean listened to her talk, his own track record with relationships rendering him pretty useless on the advice front. He was also pretty irritated on her behalf.

"I don't really know what to say, I mean I guess it's good you didn't hex him, but if you want to call him really mean names I'm happy to listen." He sat back on his stool and grabbed his own glass.

"You're entitled to feel however you like though. That much I do know." Therapy had definitely drilled being allowed your own feelings into him.

"The best really mean name I can come up with is 'idiotic asshat' and I think that means... I'm really beyond caring. Does that mean I didn't care as much as I thought I did in the first place?" She sipped at her wine, contemplating the idea, and mulling over her lack of heartache.

And decided that it must mean exactly that.

"So. How I feel is... stupid that I wasted my time and cooking, really." Mandy lifted her glass to Dean with a small smile. "So. To being smart and single."

Dean sipped his own drink and shrugged. "Maybe it does. Maybe it will hit you later, who can say. But this is better than being sad, surely?"

"Well, I'm not sure about smart, but I'm single," he said, and raised his own glass to her. "And wasting good cooking on someone just feels really unfortunate."

"But if he thinks you wouldn't support him, wouldn't understand because of your blood? It's like muggle society condemning me for my skin colour."

"Smart enough to recognise waste of good cooking." She smiled and raised her glass again, then sobered.

"You'd really think that the world could move past things like these. Colour, and blood. Human is human. Magic is Magic. Maybe one day the whole planet will wise up. Think so?"

"Merlin, I hope so. I get it from both directions. Skin colour from the muggles, blood status from the wizards. Yes it means my experience is different, but it doesn't mean I should be treated differently. That there should be different rules," he deflated slightly and sighed.

"Not my favourite topic, endlessly frustrating and the progress seems about as fast as a snail that's half asleep." He gave her an apologetic smile.

"So, apart from the breakup how are you?" he asked, hoping to shift the topic a bit.

Apart from that... She considered as she nursed the wine, slowing deliberately. "I'm okay, I think. Always busy at the clinic. There must be something in the water lately. I've got four patients expecting twins; it's some kind of record. And rearranging my flat, and now, thinking about a landscape for my room."

She paused, then nodded. "I think I'll survive."

"Twins!" The thought was terrifying to him. "I have little sisters, two of them, but two babies at the same time if flipping horrifying. I only remember the younger one being born really, but it seemed like a lot of work. Best of luck to all of them. Mind you I guess you're not the one taking care of them."

"Oh, yes, the landscape. Hang on." He shuffled through his pockets again and then remembered where he'd put his business slips. He pulled out his notebook with a pleased smile and opened the back cover. There were several pieces of smartly printed parchment there, a communal effort by the studio so they all had similar designs. "Here, if you want to get in touch to discuss it, this has the floo address and who to direct your owls to."

"I can't even imagine two at once," she agreed with a laugh, shaking her head. "Can't imagine one of my own, but it's fun seeing the new ones with their mums..."

She took the little slip of parchment, reading the printing and then tucking it carefully away. "Thanks. Matt... he thought it was silly, the idea I had... Since I've only got a couple windows, I imagined a seascape, mountains, a meadow... all the views I could have spread through the flat. Looking at the same thing all the time is sort of boring, really."

She finished off the wine and set the glass aside; two was probably enough. "But count me definitely interested."

" That sounds great. Of course that's the beauty of magical art. No need to settle for one thing, it can be ever changing. Like I said Braith has more landscape experience than I do, but either or both of us would be happy to meet you."

He gestured to her empty glass. " Are you done?" He asked.

She considered the glass, then nodded, pushing it across the bar. "I think I'd better be, or I'll forget how to Apparate home. And Flooing under the Influence is something that should definitely be against some sort of law. No telling where you might end up."

She offered a faint smile, and found that it felt a little more real than she'd imagined it would.

"Thanks though. For the wine, but mostly for the ear." She glanced at her watch, then dug in a pocket for coins and laid them on the polished bar. "Think I'm going to treat myself to a new book and maybe something from the sweet shop, and distract myself from the rest of my day off, but I'll definitely come see you at the studio soon."
