Who: Bryony and Dennis
What: Shopping
Where: Flourish and Blotts
When: 3rd March, afternoon
Rating: SFW probably

Bryony's rarely used ink on her calendar - why should she, when she always had a pencil to hand for sketching? Today, though, she'd carefully inked the word 'SHOPPING' all the way across the square for March 3rd in violet ink. Allegra's birthday was on Saturday which meant Bryony needed a new robe (or at least to adjust the fit of one of her owned robes), a haircut and - worst of all - a present. Bryony never knew what to buy for any of her siblings. Rowan had a job and her supposed ignorance of Quidditch meant she couldn't exactly buy him the best new equipment on the market. Allegra and Shauna often went shopping together, or with Iris, and saw money as no object. Bryony, whose taste they'd always roundly dismissed, had no hope of finding them something they couldn't find for themselves.

Knowing in her heart that she was really just putting off the worst of the expedition, Bryony went straight from the hair salon to Flourish and Blotts. The chances of her finding a book Allegra would be interested in were barely a point above absolute zero, but looking around the stacked shelves and rare manuscripts was both more pleasurable and less intimidating than trawling the rest of Diagon Alley. For once, Bryony kept away from the art section. There would be nothing for Allegra in there and she knew she could get lost for hours looking at books on new or ancient art styles. Instead she situated herself by the shelf of new releases. Not fiction, Allegra would deem that a waste of time, but perhaps there'd be a book on fashion or jewellery or... something.

Dennis has never been able to get the hang of Tuesdays. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays could be overcome, beaten into submission, or even enjoyed, but not Tuesdays. Tuesdays had to be endured. As such, it was with a certain resigned melancholia that he found himself browsing the shelves of Flourish and Blotts, having decided to ignore a bunch of article rewrites his editor had requested of him.

He moved steadily towards the non-fiction section, wondering vaguely if there was anything new and interesting to snag his attention and improve him mood, when he very nearly ran into someone. "Oh I'm terribly sorry," he said, bringing himself to an abrupt - if awkward - halt, inches away from the woman he nearly walked into. "I was paying more attention to the books than my surroundings! I didn't mean to nearly walk into you!" Just shut up, Dennis, he thought rather despairingly, shutting his mouth rather smartly. "Um, yes, sorry. You know how it is with books."

Even in a bookshop, Bryony was aware of her surroundings. She noticed the tall stranger approaching and managed to step sideways out of his way. It wasn't a graceful step and she only narrowly avoided the collision - and yet suddenly he was apologising. Bryony quickly shook her head, taking another step backwards. "It's fine. It wasn't your fault." Objectively, it had been, of course, but Bryony was only too used to taking the blame.

At a safer distance now, Bryony glanced awkwardly between the shelves and the man at her side. "It's really fine," she offered, more genuinely, even managing a small smile. "I know how it is with books."

Dennis smiled brightly at her, because honestly they both knew it was his fault, and the fact that she was being polite about the whole thing just made him feel more embarrassed. "Of course it was my fault, but thank you for demuring anyway. It's always nice to meet someone who's not ready to throw you under a bus because you're absent minded." He stopped and winced. "Ah, if by 'bus' you mean, um, 'carriage' and I do. Of course the analogy just jumped out the window, but thats Muggle metaphors for you." He closed his eyes for a moment and wondered fervently if there was some sort of cosmic deity or corporeal manifestation of fate watching him right now, and whether it was laughing it's divine arse off.

"Books are the absolute best," he agreed, looking around with a happy smile. "Half the reason I became a journalist was so I could read as much as humanly possible. It was either that or become a reader for a publisher." He gave her his most charming and apologetic smile, and extended his hand to her. "But where are my manners, I'm Dennis Creevey! Pleased to meet you!"

Bryony would never have asked what a 'bus' was - she assumed it was a muggle term and she always felt embarrassed about her lack of familiarity with a world that was larger than her own. The translation was much appreciated, and she gave another shy smile. She wanted to know more about the muggle world, she was just a little nervous of experiencing it in real life, and academically she tended to concentrate on the art side.

"Ravenclaw?" she asked curiously, looking up at Dennis and studying his face. He seemed a little familiar, like they'd probably been at school at the same time but not really familiar enough for Ravenclaw - unless he'd just changed a lot in the intervening years. Bryony hadn't kept up with all that many of her former housemates after graduating. He was quite cute, and Bryony quickly looked away. It wasn't often she slipped into such thoughts - and for good reason. No one would want her to think they were attractive. But then he was offering his hand and Bryony's manners snapped back into place as she looked back to introduce herself. "Bryony Capper."

Dennis tilted his head and lifted eyebrows questioningly? "Ravenclaw? Me? Ha! Perish the thought," he replied with a cheeky grin - guessing that she herself was probably a Ravenclaw. Hopefully she wouldn't be too upset with the teasing, which unfortunately appeared to be hard wired into Dennis' DNA. "I was a Gryffindor, me. Still loved reading though. Or rather love, it didn't stop." He waggled his eyebrows at her, deciding to just go with the weirdness that was apparently invading his body.

He grinned and shook her hand cordially. "So, Miss Capper, what's your poison for today," he asked, looking at the various books displayed enticingly in front of them. "Or are you just here for a dreamy browse?"

"Oh." Bryony blushed, her cheeks heating up almost painfully fast. She'd forgotten - how could she? - that not everyone held Ravenclaw in good standing. Her own family thought it a perfectly respectable house for men, who could profit from being intellectual and well-educated, but she knew of only too many families who had a 'Sytherin or nothing' mentality. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean-" She cut herself off, bemused. Gryffindor? She'd thought that most of the Gryffindors were more accepting, though she supposed that couldn't be true of everyone. Were there families who would be disappointed by anything by red and gold? It had never quite occurred to her in that light. But then Dennis was wiggling his eyebrows at her, inviting her to laugh and she realised he was teasing. She gave a slight, nervous giggle.

Despite her relief not to have caused offence, she decided the house question was too fraught - and eagerly moved on to the other topic presented. "I'm not shopping for me," she admitted, looking wistfully over at the art section. "I need to buy a present for my sister." And Bryony had really no idea at all where to begin. Shauna didn't even like books, particularly. She preferred magazines, but that wouldn't be an acceptable present.
