The Scamanders had been hosting the fundraiser on the Eve of Christmas Eve for many years. It was considered by most to be one of the Christmas parties, even though a donation was required for a plate. Not an exorbitant amount, but a goodly enough one that they could earn funds for the coming year to help with the rescue. The food was always exquisite, as was the wine and other alcohol; the music was considered divine, and these days weren’t just the classics of his grandparents’ and parents’ time, but with a bit more modern in order to entice the younger generation. There was dancing, of course, as any decent formal party offered.
So while it was black tie and a fundraiser, it was also laid back in a fashion that some parties were not. The estate was decorated tastefully and elegantly for Christmas, magical in a way that was only partly magical, and the service was discreet. The Scamanders, though not an original family, had had money for more than a few generations and knew how to deploy it. The fundraiser of course depended on more than the money per plate, but those enjoying themselves, the generosity of the season, and the alcohol all often combined for them to make out very well for a very good cause.
Rolf was the nominal host of the evening, though he still considered that his grandfather’s role. He and his grandmother still greeted most everyone, but Rolf had been in charge of a lot more of the proceedings than ever before. His parents were rarely around and indeed, he wasn’t certain that they were even attending tonight; he tried not to think on it. But his sisters were all in evidence except for Carpathia, who had her own obligations with her husband in France, or so was her note of apology.
So far, Rolf rather thought the evening was going swimmingly.
