Journal: it's the most wonderful time of the year
[Public]: So word has it we might be having a Christmas get-together at the house. I'm looking for eggnog recipes that include a lot of alcohol. Send me your favorites?

[Warded to Dora]: Do you have holiday plans? My parents kidnapped me to Boston for my birthday with the family, but I won't be traveling again until the New Year. I'd like to see you. Soon.

[Warded to Bryn & Ben]: So what's the good word on this party? The 19th is a Friday. Just saying.

[Ward to Julian]: I'm looking into a couple of animal adoptions and considering your side-kick at the office, I thought I'd reach out to you. Any suggestions? I'm still re-learning my way around London (and wizarding community, if I'm honest). Thanks.

While eggnog's not something I've done a whole lot, I do have the recipe a Muggle friend of mine introduced us to during the Christmas section of training. Supposedly it's a famous jazz musician's recipe, but it packs quite a punch:

  • 1 egg per person
  • 2 sugar cubes per egg
  • 1 shot of 151 proof Jamaican rum per person
  • 1 shot of brandy or Bourbon per person
  • Some milk (amount not specified)
  • Double cream (amount not specified)
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)
  • Fresh nutmeg – lots

Separate the eggs. Mix milk and egg yolks in a bowl. Add rum very, very gradually, or it'll burn the eggs. Add brandy or Bourbon. Whip the egg whites. Add them. Whip the cream and add it. Add fresh grated nutmeg and stir. Add the ice cream if you want to keep the eggnog cold, otherwise leave it out.

Admitted, alcoholic drinks aren't my specialty, but I have the recipe for some delicious eggnog cupcakes.

A recipe that calls for bourbon! This seems fun. How much nutmeg is lots, do you think?

I might try to make a batch before the party to try it out. You're the witch from Sweet Nothings, in the Alley, right? If I try out a batch, I might bring some by for you to try with me, just as a warning.

I believe that depends on how many people you're making eggnog for.

I am indeed, though I prefer Melinda. You're Bryn's roommate, right?

[Private to Christ]
You're welcome to bring down a batch, but you're also welcome to make it here. If you're making a large batch, I have the equipment for that. Just bring the alcohol, then you can buy the rest of the ingredients from me (I'd recommend pasteurized eggs to avoid people getting sick aside from potential hangovers).

I do believe I'll take you up on that, there will be enough going on in the kitchen here without me making a mess of things in a very large pot.

I'll let you know when we have the date set? (And you're of course invited, and yes, I'm Bryn's roommmate).

I thought I recognised your name.

Why thank you, and I'd be happy to attend, if it doesn't collide too much with work. By all means, make use of the offer, though I would appreciate it if it could be, if not after closing time, then at least towards the end of the day.

I'm thinking of getting a group together to go to Paris next weekend. Aside from that, and spending time with Julian and Tristan for the holiday itself, I have nothing set in stone right now.

I'm sorry, I didn't know it was your birthday! Happy belated birthday. Definitely should get together soon. I'd like to see you again as well. When and where are you thinking?

Group trip to Paris, you say?

I'm not sure anyone knew it was, but you did miss a rousing game of muggle chess between my Dad and I and Mom burnt a cake despite her best efforts. So it was entertaining. I always like to see my young cousin, too (I think you'd like her, she's a character, to put it nicely).

When are you free? How'd you like a home-cooked meal this week? My place? You haven't seen the new house yet.

It's a thought? I don't really want to go alone, but I have several people I'd like to ask, so I was thinking of making it a group thing but where people can do their own thing.

Characters can be great, definitely! Still, happy birthday, I'm sorry to have missed it.

I can be free most evenings so long as I have enough notice, since I'll take off work early and potentially have to tell Richard I can't make the evening workout. But a home-cooked meal sounds delicious -- you have no idea how long it has been since I've had one. I should come clean and admit now that I am never going to be much of a cook. So just let me know what evening is best with you and I'll make myself available.

It'd probably be easier to just buy eggnog and add as much alcohol as you want.

Ah, but where's the fun in that?

Lots of fun actually. More time for enjoying the party and the effects of alcohol on the system. Less time for slaving over a drink people will be drinking more to get drunk than for the taste.

I like the way you think! You'll be at the party, right? I've got to meet the drinking genius in person.

That will all depend on the date and the time and if I'm working or not.

That should work for me unless Seamus decides that we're going to get swamped at the pub.

Should be fine! I can take care of the decorations. You know me and Christmas. We're very close.
