Who: Vikesh Moon and Gwenog Jones
What: Getting some fresh air after a victory
Where: Monument Alley Park
When: Saturday, November 1 - late evening
Status: Closed / Complete

It had been another victory for the Bats and Vikesh was feeling better about his place on the team. He'd joined some of his teammates to Finnigan's for a round of drinks (though insisting on something non-alcoholic for himself) and actually allowed himself to have a little fun. He didn't actually like being a killjoy, something he had the feeling some people thought him as, but it had been the way he'd been raised to be, and the way he'd devoted himself to being. It was a choice, and oftentimes a lonely one, so it was nice to occasionally let down his guard.

The crowd got to him, though, and he needed some room to breathe, even if the weather was starting to feel like autumn in full force. He stuffed his hands in his pockets as he walked around the park, enjoying the night and the view of the stars in the sky above.

Gwenog had enjoyed the Harpies' victory on Thursday, but despite that she hadn't bothered much with Halloween. She'd been part of the wizarding world since she was a child, but before Hogwarts there'd never been much of a celebration, and now it was catching on with the Muggles too and everything was Halloween themed and she just couldn't be bothered. Plus their ideas about witch costumes weren't something she relished.

Instead of all that she'd decided to take herself on an evening run. Although there was no reason to be stupidly risky about it, so she'd decided to head for Wizarding London. The convenient park right on Monument Alley was ideal, and she could use her wand if she got into trouble.

She was on her third lap when she spotted another figure on the path walking ahead of her. Squinting slightly as she caught up she recognised the man. Recognising opponents at speed and distance was second nature and she slowed slightly, waiting until she was fairly certain he'd hear her footsteps pounding behind him.

"Evening, Moon," she called out, cordially.

He did indeed hear the footsteps long before he spotted the figure coming his way. He nodded toward her. "Evening, Jones." Gwenog Jones was a difficult woman to miss.

"Out for a run, or do I need to worry about muggers at this time of night?" The words were spoken seriously, but it was the closest he came to making an actual joke.

Gwenog slowed to a walk, not minding the rest or the company as such. "If there were muggers I'd be still busy or sprinting, just enjoying the exercise. Never been all that much for Halloween."

"Congratulations on your victory today," she said, having caught the scores on the wireless earlier on. The Bats were ahead of the Harpies in the league, but within catching distance, which was the way she preferred it if they had to be behind. Plus they'd won the home match against them, which always made her feel a little more charitable.

He nodded, unsurprised. Jones was an intimidating figure both on and off the pitch.

"And you on yours Thursday," he returned. "It's too bad we only see each other on the pitch twice in a season. It would be an honour to play you again."

He moved to fall in with her walking, knowing from experience how frustrating it was to have a workout interrupted. "Would you mind some company?"

"Thank you. As much as I appreciate only one match day a week there are definitely teams I'd like to play more than twice a season. I like the challenge. Present company definitely included," she said, a smile spreading across her face. Some of the teams definitely warranted more play. But with the national matches which came around she got her fill.

She shrugged as he kept pace with her. "No, go for it. I wasn't going for anything too strenuous anyway. I'm not interrupting you?" she asked, picking her pace up to walk briskly rather than a jog or run.

"What's life without a good challenge?" He was in complete agreement. At times he wished the season would simply go on all year, but he understood the need for a break. On a personal note, it was a relief to have a few months where he could recharge his batteries and experience a few of the things he denied himself during the quidditch season.

"I needed the fresh air," he said simply, matching her pace for pace. "I can only take so much of a pub before I feel the need to get out of there. It's much nicer out here, no matter what the weather." In fact, it would be a lot nicer if he could grab a broom and fly around a little.

"Do you run here often? I tend to work more on flexibility than speed."

"I can understand that. I like the pub, or the club, but like I said the Halloween thing doesn't appeal too much and I felt the need to be active. When I was a child I climbed trees. I couldn't be bothered to conceal myself from the Muggles to go fly around Snowdonia, hence the running," she said.

She shrugged, resisting the urge to take the sort of flying leap that would give away her ballet training, but she'd not done the right sort of stretching really and she had zero desire to injure herself. "Sometimes I run here, sometimes in the day I run in one of the Muggle parks, but I do my own flexibility and strength training too. You do yoga, right?" she asked. It was something she'd tried once or twice, but it hadn't become anything regular for her.

"Running's not a bad way to spend your time," he offered, amused by the idea of the Great Gwenog Jones climbing trees. "And Hallowe'en's overrated anyway. Never had much interest in it myself, though we didn't exactly celebrate it in my family." In fact, his father used to say some harsh things about the other families who went out dressed up and begging door to door for candy. Vikesh's own opinions were quite mild in comparison.

"Yeah, that and flyiing whenever I can. I tried running but while it gave a pretty good physical workout, it did nothing for the soul. With both yoga and flying, I soar." It was the purest truth he could ever tell. "I teach a class at Finnigan's - you're welcome to join us if you'd ever like to give it a try."

"There are better ways, but it's not bad as the options go," she said. Sex was a better way, so was flying, but the former required going to a bar and the latter messing around with concealment spells.

She yanked a stray braid away from her mouth and nodded. "I should sometime. I've tried a couple of times at a muggle place a while back," she said. It had been when she and JoJo had still been together, something they'd tried together that JoJo hadn't been a fan of and Gwenog had decided she already got enough exercise without adding more. "Never quite made it a habit but what I tried was pretty good."

"Hinduism is the same whether we're Muggle or wizard, so the classes wouldn't be anything strange to you. Plus, there's room for people of all skill levels there." He smiled. "And for some I offer private lessons. I've never believed in keeping 'training secrets' from other players, I'd rather beat you fair and square on the pitch."

And speaking of fair and square... he looked down to where the lights of Finnigan's were bright in the distance. "Race you to the pub," he said just as he began picking up speed.

"I don't think what I did was all that religious, but I'll come along sometime," she said, then smirked. "Doesn't mean I'll tell you all my training secrets, although you're welcome to quiz me on some of the team's moves if you like." Gwenog liked to keep what advantages she could, and it wasn't as if telling him to watch muggle TV and films for hints or ideas was revolutionary in her mind, and telling him about the ballet was never going to happen. Nor would it help him.

She'd automatically followed his uptick of speed, but as he issued the challenge she accelerated further, not bothering to reply. She could always apparate if she got behind, although she suspected they were relatively evenly matched and he wouldn't appreciate the move. She sped up to a pace she was sure she could use all the way with enough left for a kick of speed at the end, grinning at the challenge.

He refrained from telling her anything could be religious from the right point of view, one he definitely held. "Maybe another time for the quizzing, give me time to put together a list of questions. I don't always think well on the spot when I'm not on the pitch."

He was pleased when she sped up with him. He didn't care if he was in regular clothes, he just wanted to feel the air on his face. He kept speeding up, getting faster with every few steps, not working on any particular strategy - just aiming for Finnigan's and letting loose. He pumped his arms, evened out his breath and using all of his meditative training to do so.

The pub was in sight.

The feeling of wind on her face as she ran was just what Gwenog had wanted when she came out for her run, then to have the competitive option open to her too her heart began to soar. Moon was pulling ahead of her slightly but she knew her final sprint would be good.

As the pub came into sight properly she picked up her speed, pushing herself to run all out, her arms pumping and lungs starting to burn as the speed made it more difficult to breathe. This was the sort of thing she trained for, the hard work that brought her joy as she pushed her body to its limits.

Jones was catching up and the bar was getting closer. If he could hold her off for a few seconds more, then he'd be there first and would have won.

He didn't.

He slowed down and eventually stopped, his hands on his knees as he worked to slow his heartbeat and breathing. His body thrummed with energy the way it often did when he exercised, the feeling a familiar one yet always a welcome one. He looked up at Gwenog, and despite his 'loss', he had a huge grin on his face. "You, Jones, are good at what you do." He reached out a hand for a proper shake.

As she reached the pub she stuck her arms out just in time to catch herself from smacking into it at full speed. Taking a step back she sucked in a breath, turning to find she'd beaten Moon and her grin widened. She bent over sucking the air into her lungs, slowing down the rate of her heart and her breathing even as her muscles began to realise what a huge push she'd just put them through.

As she heard him speak she looked up and returned his grin, reaching over and shaking his hand. "Thanks. You too. That was a proper race. Had to push to win. Wasn't sure I would." Yes she'd had an advantage from already being in workout gear and warmed up, but a fellow pro athlete was going to give her a run for her money any day of the week.

"Well, we'll have to see if it translates into the next Bats/Harpies match," he said as they shook.

"I should be getting back before my teammates miss me too much, but you're welcome to come join us. I'll buy you a drink, it's the least I can do to congratulate you your victory."

"We'll see," she said, the challenge in her voice clear. The Bats were good opponents, it was a match that could easily go either way depending on the conditions and the players.

She gave a little shrug. "Thanks, but no thanks. I should cool down properly for one, and I don't fancy transfiguring my workout gear into something pub appropriate. See you again." She waved her hand in a salute-like wave and set off at a gentle trot back into the park.

He raised an eyebrow and watched her go, smirking to himself as she left the same way she'd arrived. He would definitely enjoy their next match, that's for sure.

Turning, he went back into Finnigan's to rejoin the celebration.
