DMLE Shenanigans
Who: Any DMLE employee
What: Stealth training aka hide and seek
Where: DMLE training room (think something like the Room of Requirement mixed with the X-Men Danger Room)
When: Saturday, Oct 25, afternoon
Rating: SFW, but maybe language?

Once every few months the heads of the various DMLE departments got together to devise a training scenario that would have members of the Aurors, Hit Wizards and Magical Law Enforcement Patrol working together. Anyone not on active duty, or in the midst of a case, would be called into the Ministry and assigned to one of three teams (teams are comprised of people from each of the three departments).

The object of the day? Capture the flags, using any means necessary (within reason). The room is equipped with different sorts of hexes, dangerous magical creatures, etc. and the teams also have to compete against each other For The Win. There are seven flags in play, and team who captures the most by the end of the exercise (let's say it's capped at 5 hours) wins and gets the Trophy until the next Inter-Departmental Fun Day Training Exercise.

To make this easier on us OOC, let's not worry about any sort of posting order. Feel free to start your own subthreads. I didn't assign characters to teams, but I think we can puzzle it out anyway?

Susan ghosted along the corridors of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, occasionally pausing to let long-suffering administrative and non-combat staffers pass. Eventually she reached the Strategic Operations hub - aka two desks pushed together and charmed to have a larger space underneath them.

"Right chaps," she said crisply. "This year we're going to win. What's the plan?"

"The plan is to get more flags than everybody else." Ron sat up from where he was slouching in his chair. He recognised the look in Susan's eyes, so quickly helped to pull the tables straight. He loved a bit of strategic planning.

"We need to use what we know about our... esteemed colleagues. Like Team Dark and Moody." He waved his hand dismissively. "Harry always likes a good defensive spell, and so on."

Neville looked from Susan to Ron and he raised his hand shyly. Yes, he did like 'capture the flag' but there were so many strategies that could be done, so many things that could go wrong and you'd have to re-evaluate. "I say we go aggressive and get this shit done this year. Teams of two, one to cover the other and that's it. We grab flag and we win." It would be a bit of both offensive and defensive.

"Yeah." Ron nodded in agreement. "First rule of Quidditch take out the Seeker. Except this time we just take out everyone who gets in our way."

A new recruit to the Law Enforcement Patrol timidly raised her hand. "I don't think I can take out Harry Potter."

Ron frowned. "He's only human. And at least just try and knock off his glasses if he's wearing them. Blind as a bloody bat."

Susan looked pointedly from Ron to Neville, and then at the new recruit. "Alright, I tend to agree," she admitted after a moment, "Though we did all assure Madame Proudfoot and Madame Montgomery that there would be no maiming." She waggled her eyebrows at the two men for a second. "We don't want to upset the head of the Auror Office and the head of Magical Law Enforcement, do we?"

She paused thoughtfully for a moment, mulling over the other teams in her head. "I tend to agree with you Ron about Harry - he always uses expelliarmus and he's blinder than a bat without his glasses, so we go in with offensive spells like Neville suggested and knock his glasses off."

Neville laughed, though it was a silent one. "Maybe that's exactly why Harry's so defensive when he duels. He knows people will got for the glasses. I say we pull down his pants, surprise him!" He offered with a grin. The poor recruits looked as though they were going to faint and Neville kind of liked it.

"But you know, if Madame Montgomery doesn't want anything vicious, she shouldn't even be allowing this game. But hey, I say all is fair and I'm definitely going ahead with last's year's plan of making someone's skin purple for a few days."

"Okay, okay, we shouldn't spend the whole day taking the piss out of Harry, even though it would be really fucking easy to do that." Ron was his best friend and after over a decade, he really knew which buttons to push. "And he's not the only one on the team."

Noticing that the newbie was looking a little pale at the thought of this 'game', Ron grinned. She could only have been a few months out of Hogwarts; he was sure he had never been that green. "Anyway, no one said anything about maiming," Ron said with a smirk. "Just a bit of bruising. A few boils. Maybe a mild concussion?"

Susan snorted indelicately and nodded. "We still have to work with him, even if it is quite fun to piss him off." She paused and shot the new recruit a wide-eyed look. "I meant easy," she lied blandly, "Easy is what I meant." She examined her nails meditatively for a moment. "Hype is fairly scary so nothing too strenuous there, and let's not make the mistake of pissing off Lav. She'd make earrings from your balls, Ron."

"Right then," Susan said in agreement. "Shall we head off to the first room?"

Snakes and rats and smoke, oh my!

This area of the training room reminded Lavender a lot of Hogwarts. The rather obvious staircase that led up to the balcony where the flag was flapping in an enchanted breeze even looked like one of the moving ones that caught students out all the time. Hogwarts, balcony, height. A trio of bad for Lavender.

It looked easy enough to simply head straight up the stairs and grab the flag. But, of course, it wasn't nearly as easy as it looked. For a start, the stairs weren't obscured at all, which meant that anyone from an opposing team would have a clear shot at taking you out. Secondly, there was the coiling dark smoke that covered every step until someone got too close and it transformed. So far, Lavender had seen it turn into snakes and rats, sending two different people running in the opposite direction as their phobias got the better of them.

There was also no telling what the stairs might do once someone actually stepped on them.

Lavender glanced in Hyperion's direction. "You didn't happen to pack a broom today, did you?" she asked a little hopefully.

Hyperion stared at the smoke covering the stairs glumly for a moment. He wasn't afraid of snakes or rats, but he didn't particularly relish the idea of being bitten by one. Still, there had to be something they could do.

He looked at Lavender and chuckled. "Nope, I really should have though." He paused and approached the stairs, where the mist turned into a mass of coiling snakes. Experimentally he blasted a couple of them off the stairs, causing them to extinguish into puffs of smoke. Lifting his eyebrows, he looked back at Lavender. "What if we tried to blast our way off?"

Without waiting for her to answer, the cast a shield charm against the side of the staircase and began blasting his way up the stairs and checking with his feet to make sure the next step was there. He was halfway up the stairs when the steps disappeared on him. "Well shite," he muttered.

Frankly, Lavender usually was all for blasting her way through things. It was why she made a much better Hit Wizard than she would an Auror. But this was a stealth exercise and blasting might not be called for. Unfortunately.

Quickly wreathing herself in a hasty Disillusionment Charm, Lavender took up a protective stance at the bottom of the stairs with the aim of trying to take out anyone who thought they'd have a shot at Hyperion. She looked up over her shoulder to see him stopped halfway up. Lavender sighed. How much of the staircase was an illusion, she wondered? "Stairs gone or just invisible?" she hissed.

One of the snakes curled up around Hyperion's ankle, then the whole mass seemed to shudder. For a second, they became smoke again, but they quickly solidified. Lavender's eyes widened as she took in the sight of piles of brightly coloured frogs.

"I think just invisible," he hissed back, still concentrating. At least Lavender was good for this sort of thing - always ready to jump in and help. Plus, Harry was about somewhere, under that cloak of his.

Internally, Hyperion wanted to scream. He hated frogs. Really hated frogs. But he was an auror, and he knew that they at least wouldn't hurt him - no matter what his ranidaphobia told him - so he continued up the stairs, very much aware that they weren't being particularly stealthy. He made it up to the platform and sighed with audible relief as the frogs melted away. Quickly, he grabbed the flag and turned to look at the stairs. He froze for a second, staring at the tall sentinel-like guardians that were currently blocking his way. "Fuck me," he groaned.

When the frogs dispersed back into smoke again, Lavender was both relieved and apprehensive to see what would happen next. Then, she settled decisively on apprehensive as it formed into granite-like figures.

She made a quick decision, which was maybe not the smartest one in the world, and left her left her post at the base of the stairs. As soon as she set foot on them, her Disillusionment Charm was stripped away, though it took her another step to notice. Damn. Now she and Hyperion were easy targets. "Bollocks."

One of the sentinels swivelled to face her, somehow staring her down even without a proper face. A purple streak of a spell hit the stone banister about a foot in front of her; Lavender was almost offended by the sloppy aiming of whichever of their opponents was trying to take them out. She crouched down low to make herself less of a target. Another of the sentinels turned turned in her direction, the first shifting back to face Hyperion. Lavender frowned. "I think they might be confused that there's two of us."

Harry had been sneaking about under his cloak, though he didn't intend to use it the whole time. Mostly because one of the teams was stacked with his closest friends, and they'd know all his tricks. He was going to have to think outside the box if he didn't want them to guess his every move.

After taking in some recon, he looked around for the other members of his team and spotted Lavender and Hyperion at the top of the stairs, facing down...well, Harry wasn't sure what they were but he didn't like the look of them. They seemed confused though, and he could use that to his advantage.

He crept up the stairs, then cast de-animation charms on the sentinels. They froze, returning to their lifeless natural state. He swept off the robe and shoved it in his pocket, grinning at the other two. "All right, Ron's team is planning something--probably to do with me, but I couldn't get a read on the other team. I can act as decoy, while you two go after the flags."

"I was wondering when you were going to show up." Lavender didn't lower her wand, instead keeping an eye out for whoever had tried to hex her before; they might not be so unlucky with their next spell. "And we totally had that, by the way," she added. She spared a glance at the sentinels, not trusting them to stay still for long.

"You're sure? Okay. Remember to try and take out Susan if you get a chance, yeah?"

He grinned cheekily at her. "Someone had to do recon," he said, and mapped out what he'd found out about the other teams. "And I know you did, but it was just too good an opportunity to miss. Don't you know by now that I like my dramatic entrances?"

Harry was feeling a bit high from the adrenaline that always came with these sorts of exercises, and since he was around friends he didn't mind poking fun at himself.

"Okay, but remember to protect me when she comes for revenge, yeah?" He wasn't ashamed to admit that he dreaded the idea of Susan being out for revenge. He'd seen it before, but had never been on the receiving end of it.

Hyperion - narrowing his eyes warily at the sentinals - made his way quickly down the stairs, rolling into position next to Lavender in an impressive if utterly unecessary show of athetlicism. "So what did your recon actually discover then," he asked with a quirked eyebrow.

He looked from one to the other than shook his head resolutely. "I'm totally not going after Susan. She's a Hufflepuff: she knows where to hide the bodies," he deadpanned, before breaking out into a grin. "What are you going to do for us to make it worth sticking our necks out eh Potter," he asked, looking him up and down suggestively. "Dress up in women's clothing?"

"Team Bones, aka Team Betrayers, are locked up tight and I didn't get much, but Bode's team are planning an ambush. They're going to sneak up from the South, and take the flag in the East corner. I don't think they've thought much past that."

Harry nodded in agreement, Hyperion was a smart bloke. He did his best to ignore the way Hyperion eyed him, knowing that it was just a joke. He'd pretty much gotten over his crush on the older Auror these days, because it wasn't a good idea to mix work and pleasure. "I'm pretty sure that would only cause everyone to laugh at me. I wouldn't make a pretty woman."

Lavender raised her eyebrows at Hyperion as if to say, Can you maybe flirt later? She knew all too well what it was like to be on the receiving end of one of those looks of his. The Ministry ought to class it as a dangerous weapon.

"You wouldn't need to be pretty, just distracting," Lavender teased Harry. "You just go cause mayhem, maybe disrupt Bode's team? And I suppose I'm going to have to take on Susan if it comes to it, aren't I?" She shook her head ruefully. "Never send a wizard to do a witch's job."

Hyperion returned Lavender's look with one that clearly said Oh come on, let me mess with him a little! After a moment however he acquiesced and focused back on the conversation.

"You'd be perfectly pretty in drag," Hyperion disagreed with an emphatic nod. "But Lav's right, you just need to distract them long enough to-" he jumped back in time to miss a crudely aimed curse. He looked over to see Wendell grimacing from a spot half way down the opposite side of the room. Hyperion snorted contemptuously and flung a stunner at the man, send him toppling over. "Sorry," he said, turning back to his teammates. "Yes, you're going to have to take Susan, she'd kill anyone else."

Harry pulled on his cloak again, mostly to hide the blush that refused to disappear. It was preferable being invisible if he was going to be such an idiot over things.

"Good thing I'm good at distractions," he said, and went to do just that.

Susan swept up along the Corridor of Unnecessarily Lanuginous Monsters. She spotted two of the greener members of Bode's team and grinned like a maniac. She ran at them full belt, executing a number of needlessly acrobatic attacks to incapacitate them. Once she'd knocked the second one unconscious with her knees around his neck, she looked back at Ron and grinned. "So the flag's just up there," she said, pointing with her chin. "Which means Bode'll be there. Do you want him or shall I take him out?

Ron folded his arms over his chest, leaning back to get a better look at Susan with her knees around a man's next. "You couldn't have just stunned them?" he asked. "One day, you're going to get hurt faffing around like that." Sure, he could appreciate that Susan had style, but it didn't seem particularly efficient when you had magic at hand. And now I sound like Hermione, he thought. Which wasn't always a bad thing.

"Can I take Bode? He stole my hole punch last week so, y'know, he needs to pay."

"Of course I could've stunned them," Susan replied primly as she pirouetted off the prone man as he slumped to the floor. "But I like to keep in practice for those annoying situations when I don't have a wand, or I'm not allowed to use magic to take someone down." She brushed some figmentary particles of dust off her sleeve and then looked at him with a quirked eyebrow. "Besides, nothing is more beautiful than a man's impotent rage when you crush his windpipe with your thighs. You should try it some day."

She chuckled and nodded. "Of course, the whole department knows how important stationary is to you dear, be my guest." Still chuckling slightly she took out her wand and began to move stealthily down the hall towards the sound being made by Bode and the rest of his time. "What's your plan," she asked quietly as they neared their targets.

"I dunno. I think I might just keep these strong, manly thighs of mine away from anyone's windpipe." He gave Susan a lopsided grin. "Probably just end up breaking my own leg, anyway."

Ron pressed his back to the wall. "Hmm." He had a few ideas, but which to use? "You go for the flag, I'll go for Bode and the others." He pulled a small sachet from his pocket. "You're not afraid of the dark, are you?" he asked, holding up the Peruvian Darkness Powder.

Susan gave him a look of feigned anguish. "But what are manly thighs for if not to be around someone's waist, I mean windpipe. Windpipe is what I meant." She snorted and nodded in agreement with his assessment. "I'll give you that breaking your leg would be a possibility, also you possess some things between your legs that would probably hurt a hell of a lot more if the crushing was done inexpertly."

"Sounds like a plan to me," she agreed approvingly. It was simple, it was effective, and it would help them get the flag. She looked at the sachet for a moment then grinned hugely. "Oh you are brilliant, did you know that Ron? I'm not afraid of the dark at all, so do go ahead."

"And I completely believe you when you say that's what you mean." Ron gave her his best innocent look. "And I don't think I want to know what you get up to with your manly thighs in your free time."

He nodded sagely, trying not to grin. "I did," he said, doing his best Percy impression. "Thank you for noticing." Palming the bag, he loosened the tie and lobbed it towards their target. "Heads up."

Susan gave a mock gasp of shock and horror. "Did you just refer to my thighs as 'manly' Ronald Weasley? I certainly hope I misheard you or I may have to throttle you with them."

She grinned and moved with silent feet, past a group of confused sentries and over to the flag. At one point a sentry blundered into her path, but she quickly stunned him before he knew what was happening. Once the flag was safely in her possession, she moved away and took up a position near the edge of the cloud that would allow her to take out any opponents quickly. She didn't have to wait long, grinning as she stunned the three lackeys that exited the cloud with glee. Smiling to herself, she leant against the wall and waited for Ron.

"There's only one woman's thighs I'd want anywhere near my face and they aren't yours," Ron retorted.

He waited for darkness and confusion to descend before sneaking in and disarming Bode. It had to be said that Ron took some pleasure in creating a rope around his ankles and stringing him from the ceiling. Leaving the other wizard to flail, Ron rejoined Susan. "Got it?" he asked, double-checking.
