Who: OPEN
What: Finnigan's Dance Club - a quick Salsa lesson and then everyone par-tay!
Where: Finnigan's - The Roost
When: Friday, October 17 - 9pm - 2am
Status: OPEN / Ongoing

Even though several members of the greater wizarding community were off enjoying their dates from the Fawley Foundation fundraiser, that didn't mean that everyone else couldn't have a fun night out. It was Ernie's once-a-month dance lesson, and he'd chosen a simple Salsa for the night. Those who were interested were welcome to join in the short, half-hour group lesson to learn a few steps - and later, Ernie was more than happy to give a few one-on-one lessons to any man or woman interested - but for those who weren't the music was pumping in the room specially designed by Dominic to be fun and flamboyant - something like Ernie himself. Neither the music nor the pouring of drinks would end until last call.

[A/N - Feel free to start your own threads below, and/or start one for a private salsa lesson with Ernie]

Dora gave him a hesitant, almost bashful smile when he looked up. She felt rather out of place if only because she'd never really had a conversation like in the bathroom before. Not with someone who had similar problems if for different reasons. She took her wand with a blatant look of relief, immediately feeling better about things if still physically miserable.

She blinked up at him. "What the fuck were they doing in the sink?" She asked him, baffled, brogue strong. She shook her head carefully. "Gods I was so wasted." Was in this case being relative. She still felt wasted. She felt along her dress and sighed in relief after a moment as well, pulling out a garter which she pulled out a small DisIllusioned knife. "Well, didn't manage to lose anything. That's good at least," she said, half to herself as she sheathed the knife and it disappeared again.

"I'll just... get dressed," she said awkwardly. "I'll be done in a minute." She slipped back in the room to dress. She had to (very cautiously) shrink everything down, as transfiguration might go really wrong right now. She came out with her wand holding her bun up and her other clothes clutched to her. She carefully leaned down to get the water. "Shower is yours," she said.

Wayne wasn't sure of any three words that could have made him happier in that instant. Shower is yours.

"Thanks," he replied, appreciating how well she'd done with shrinking his clothes. He'd have to get some tips from her with spellwork.

"Um, help yourself to whatever," he told her, waving his hand in the direction of the kitchenette area. He knew she'd be able to see the bin of toys by the door, the assortment of kids' and grownups' DVDs, the empty bottles of booze he had left over from the last time he quit drinking...

This nausea was going to kill him. He knew that half a joint would do his stomach a world of good, but...well...she'd just met him. Plus, he was supposed to have quit.

He showered quickly, having only lukewarm water left, and put on a fresh t-shirt and some sweatpants.

"There's bread, I think, and some crackers. Sorry I don't have any hangover potion or whatever," he continued. "I sort of..." he waved his hand. "Never stocked back up from the last time I quit drinking."

"Thanks," she said, setting her clothes down and wishing she had a cup of very strong, very dark coffee. She sighed wistfully. She also wished for a nice little vial of hangover potion, which would make the lurking nausea go away. Of course, she was also still slightly drunk, she suspected. She just hated the lingering taste of tequila, though. Fucking tequila.

"I'll find... something," she said, thinking that food still didn't really sound that good. She shrugged. "I was goign to ask if you knew of the potion. I'm not even sure I have some at home right now though." She looked mournfully at the bread, which seemed to be mocking her stomach. "Not that I'm doing a Summoning Charm that far away."

She went over and flopped on the couch with a soft sound. She groaned softly, rubbing an ear. With a grimace, she flipped the one aid out, its disillusionment fading though she wrapped her hand about it. It felt a lot better.

Dora didn't seem to be bothered too much by the had-they-or-hadn't-they, so Wayne put it to the back of his mind, for now.

At least while his mind was throbbing the way it was.

Instead, he retrieved the water filter pitcher - London water tasted like a car park - and plunked it on the coffee table in front of the sofa, to keep company the two mugs of water.

"So," he sighed, flopping down next to her.

And then realized he couldn't think of a single thing to say.

Dora kept her eyes slitted open, watching his lips from under her arm as he spoke, though he only said the one word. She was tempted to take out her other aid, but it would leave her secret out there to find, no matter that her ear ached. Everything else did too.

"So... want to tell me a little more about you?" she ventured, head resting on the couch arm, body facing toward him. "I don't know much, and I'd like to listen." So she could help, and so she'd know things. "You have Rhys?"

Well, that was a start, anyway.

"Yeah. He's my kid. Turns eight in almost a month. Since we both feel like death on a biscuit, I'll save you the mental math. His mum and I were fifteen. And that's why I left after fifth year." Not that he expected her to remember him at all, much less remembering him leaving, alongside all the other students who left that year.

"She's a good mum. And really, I'm kind of a shit dad. I get him one weekend a month. But now that he's turning eight, there's this hearing...if I can prove sober for a month, and if I pass a drugs test, I get him two weekends a month. And I don't even know if that'd be good or bad."

This was more than he'd told anyone, probably, ever. So, in for a sickle, in for a galleon.

"I'm going to fail the drugs test too. Well, I'm going to rig it. With magic."

She was grateful he did the math for her. "Yeah, I guess you all didn't have a potion or charm, huh," she said with a sigh. "Not that you could have used the charm, underage and all," she added as an afterthought. She flapped her hand mildly at the windows, automatically screening the light down to a more acceptable level for the moment.

She sighed with relief for a moment and let her eyes open a little wider. Her unconscious use of magic was telling about her upbringing at least.

"It'd be good, I think," she said after a moment of thought, staring at the ceiling. Nice plain ceiling. Her hangover approved. "You love your kid, yeah? I can tell from your voice. I think he'd want you to be around more." Her eyes shifted to look at him. "My dad disappeared during the war. You kind of miss them when they're gone," she said.

"Oh yeah? What's your poison, then?" she asked almost idly, as if it wasn't a big deal at all. "Yeah, there's a potion for that, so long as it's not a magical test. I'm ... well, not shite at brewing, but we can get you something." If he was looking for condemnation for it, he was looking in the wrong place.

"Well, no, we didn't have potions or charms, but there's...muggle methods that we, ah...we didn't use. We were -- " He wasn't sure how to put it. "We'd both had a half-tab of Ecstasy, so we were a bit off our heads at the time."

And Wayne did, he did love his kid - but he wasn't sure he could handle...well, babies were easy, and toddlers were fine as long as you could both chase them and put up with the tantrums. Kids who will ask the tough questions and get in fights and rebel...not his forte.

Plus, Rhys was due to start Hogwarts in like 3 years.

"I've tried to stay away from the hard stuff ever since then, but... the reason I can afford the glorious cathedral you find yourself in is because I sort of work for the guy who used to sell me weed. So now I don't smoke it so much as I just divvy it up in baggies and make deliveries."

He tried not to think about how much calmer his nausea would be if he smoked right now. But the idea was to stay clean, right?

"What about you?"

"Yeah, I've heard of some of them," she said, though she'd take a potion any day, to be honest. She actually prefered the charms, but there were times she stripped herself of charms, and if she didn't remember to reapply it, it could mean trouble. "Ah yes, impairment can do it," she said wryly, not criticizing but commenting on it.

"Hard stuff is bad," she said. She turned a little so her good ear was to him, face resting on her arm. "Sometimes you have to do what you have to do for money," she said with a one shouldered shrug. "But you don't want to get in trouble, either." At least not in the muggle world. She didn't think anyone in the wizarding world would really give a shit.

"Pain potions, sometimes sleep potions," she said. "The war fucked me up, and I need them sometimes, but then there's need, and then there's need. I avoid them if I can." And yet. The words remained unspoken. "There's a few other things. Things that help a person forget for a while. I don't use any of them much, but every now and then..." she sighed.

Wayne nodded, pretty sure he could complete her thought.

"...it gets hard to find reasons not to."

She poked his leg idly with a toe, nodding slowly and carefully in agreement. "It does," she agreed. "Especially back then. I didn't give a fuck half the time if I lived or died, other than me family'd be in trouble if I died, maybe."

There were occasions, even now, when she had trouble with that. Not like she'd had in Mungos, which resulted in the barely seen tracery of scars around her Mark. And honestly she'd acted quite suicidally at times during the war. Some could even claim she had since then; she wasn't sure.

"But I think you could find reasons." She looked at him. "What might work for that? I mean, kicking your arse is an option. But it might be better to find a nicer option." Her lips turned up in a faint, teasing smile.
