Cooking Class!!
WHO: Justin and Romeo
WHEN: Sunday October 12th
WHERE: Justin's flat
WHAT: First cooking class!
RATING: PG
STATUS:

Of course Justin had a very well equipped kitchen and everything was great high end quality. It was just really sad that he had no idea how to use any of that. So far, at least and that's why he was asking help. He definitely didn't want to assume that Romeo was doing this for free because, hey, it was a class even if it was done in his own flat.

Only too late had he realized that he had forgotten to ask Romeo what he should have in terms of food and eventually figured that maybe they'd go shopping together or something. The doorbell rang and he almost ran to the door.

Romeo seemed excited and it made Justin even more excited himself as he shook Romeo's hand and let him in. "I definitely am!" He answered. "I am thrilled to finally be learning how to cook and feed myself. I'd say it's about time." He was 24 years old and it was more than time for him to learn how to take care of himself and his friends. Ernie and Seamus did cook for him sometimes and he'd like to pay back their kindness.

"It's over here," He said as he leaded the way towards the kitchen. It was very well lit and there was plenty of place for them both to be in there together. "I have pretty much all and any pieces of equipment we could need for this as far as knives and pans are concerned." Or rather he was pretty sure of it, he hadn't shopped himself.

"Do you want some wine?" He constantly saw his aunt and grandmère drink wine while cooking and had thought it would be a nice touch.

After following Justin through to the kitchen, Romeo clapped his hands together in glee at the size and set up there. It was a wonderful place to learn, much better than his own even. He began unloading the bags he had brought, setting the ingredients more or less in the order that they would be needed.

"Ah, I do not drink so much, friend," Romeo declined amiably. "Thank you for the offer though. Now, if we will just wash our hands, we can begin."

After doing so, he set himself up with what he would need, and made sure Justin had an identical set up. "All you must do, is do what I do," he said. "Can you crack an egg?" He demonstrated anyway, doing the first one slowly for Justin to watch, the following it with two more into the small bowl in quick succession.

Justin opened the fridge and took out two bottles of water instead. He set himself up the same way Romeo did and looked careful when he cracked his egg. He had done some sort of scrambled egg the previous week and it had been edible, but he was curious to know if he had done it right.

"Damn, I didn't know how to crack eggs." He said, his eyes wide as he did exactly the same thing Romeo did. "Somehow there were always pieces of it that I needed to catch up." Never mind the pancakes too. There were always shells to pick.

Clapping Justin on the back in a friendly manner, Romeo grinned at him. "So you see, my friend, you have learned something valuable already. A little practice and you will be able to crack one in each hand, as I can." Really, Romeo was thrilled with his pupil already. He was eager to learn, and quick to admit when he didn't know something.

"We will put no salt in with them," he said. "It breaks down the egg, and makes it taste... watery, so thin. He demonstrated whisking the egg in the pan, and the placement of the flat cap mushrooms and the little vine tomatoes into the pan.

"These, we season with a little salt, a little pepper," he said, "and then we turn our attention back to the eggs."

At first, when Romeo said not to put salt on the eggs, Justin gave him a puzzled look but as he was explained he nodded. Okay, no salt in eggs because it made them watery. Got it.

Mushrooms and tomatoes and Justin sighed. "This smells good already." He said as everything started to get going here and there. He seasoned as he was told and smiled.

"So now we start the toast," Romeo went on. "And it smells good because you are cooking something delicious! You are doing marvelously. Be careful though, friend - the key to good eggs is never letting them overheat. Take them off the heat, set them aside for a little, then put them back on. We must go gently, gently with them, yes?"

The toast, when he made it, was slices of thick, hard sourdough. "This bread will hold together well when we put the egg on top," he explained. "And now we add a little crème fraiche, which will bring the temperature down and make it lovely and creamy. And now we season, now that the eggs are mostly cooked and are holding themselves together."

Justin followed Romeo's lead, taking the eggs off the heat when he as supposed to and all, grinning as there was crème fraîche added to the eggs. "I love crème fraîche." His French needed some practice and it reminded him that he should definitely call grandmère about Christmas. He seasoned when told he should and looked over at Romeo.

"What kind of bread is it though? I don't recognize it." He said, still pretty excited at the whole thing.

"It is called sourdough," Romeo told him. "And while it toasts, we can take the mushrooms and tomatoes - see how well they lift out, so easy and delicious? And we plate them - so - and..."

The toast popped, and Romeo snagged his slice out of the toaster, setting it on the plate. "Now some chives," he said. He showed Justin slowly how to slice them nice and fine, then sped up to finish up, and passed them and the knife over to Justin for him to take his turn. "And they're almost done!"

He reached for the water and took a drink. "Are you ready?"

Things were going fast and Justin tried to adjust. It seemed like a quick and nice recipe he could dish out for friends and not be ashamed of it. The mushrooms and tomatoes smelled incredible and then the eggs and the toast...

With his knife in hand, he managed to finished up the chives without cutting off his fingers and smiled. "This is amazing." He said with a happy sigh.

"And you are doing so well!" Romeo enthused. "Just think, my friend - in the space of less than twenty minutes, you have gone from not even knowing how to properly crack an egg, to producing the perfect breakfast."

He dished his up, motioning for Justin to do the same. "And now, we eat," he declared happily. He took a fork full of the eggs that he had made, and held it up in a tiny mock toast before putting it in his mouth and humming appreciatively. "They are so good, with the chives," he nodded. "Tell me, what do you think of your work?"

Justin bounced on his feet excitedly and grinned at Romeo. "I am going to eat very well in the next few days." He said happily as he prepared his own plate. "This is way better than what these videos showed me to do." He told Romeo with a blush after his first bite.

"Never occurred to me to use crème fraîche." He was quite pleased with it so he grinned at Romeo. "Do you know many French recipes?" he asked hopefully.

"Not so many," Romeo said mildly. The best part of cooking was getting to eat what they had made. "I am from Mexico, you understand, and so most of my specialities are Mexican dishes. But I am always looking to expand my repertoire..."

He clapped his hands together in excitement as an idea occurred to him. "Why don't I buy a French cookbook!?" he exclaimed. "We can learn together, my friend. After a few more lessons on the basics, the things I am already comfortable, we two could branch out, and learn something completely new. Would you like to do this, with me?"

Justin grinned and quickly opened a cabinet where he was keeping his cookbooks. "I have a few." He told Romeo excitedly. "I have Italian, French, oh.." He frowned and grabbed a book. "I have a Mexican cookbook too."

He chuckled. "You are probably better suited to teach me how to make chili than they are." He grabbed his French cookbook and went back to Romeo. "I have a bunch of books, I just never got around to do anything with it." He picked up his toast again and smiled.

"I'm all up for learning any kind of food too. Mexican food sounds really good, but I don't do well on heat."

"Mexican food doesn't have to be very spicy if you don't want it to be," Romeo said, taking the book and flicking through it. "When it comes to the choice between putting in chili beans and some other kind of beans, the choice is yours. And you do not have to make jalapeño poppers if you do not want to."

He finished up his food, pulled his wand out of his back pocket and gave it a swish and a flick, clearing up his dishes and the dishes used to cook in. "You were a wonderful student," he said. "Shall we make this a weekly thing?"

Justin grinned. He so really wanted to make his own burritos. "This is amazing. So basically I can do whatever I want, yeah?" Justin had always been under the impression that he needed to follow a recipe and too bad if he didn't like it. He definitely knew what he liked or not and spices were to be used carefully in his case.

He blushed when Romeo told him he was a wonderful student. "I'm only as good as my teacher, you know." He nodded, agreeing on the weekly meeting. "I'm looking forward to it."
