Introduction and getting started meme
Name: gingertart
Fandom(s) you are working on for this fest: Harry Potter
Participation: I'm an artist, Brit-picker and occasional beta but for this fest; a writer
The one item from your list that you most want to complete: tricky one - I have to complete all of them! OK, the fic for snarry_holidays.
Items with a deadline other than this fest: fics for merry_smutmas, snarry_holidays, phoenix_flies, snape_after_dh and snarry_swap
Most fun item on your list: phoenix_flies fic for a fun prompt (which is why I've completed it!)
Item you are dreading the most/need the most encouragement on: Will probably be snarry_swap because I'll have used up my plot-bunnies by the time I get to that one... but it is an anonymous exchange so I can't actually discuss it.
How do you start a project? Depends - usually I get a vague idea, start writing it down, then find I need to go and research. Until recently, I worked alone and sent my work to a beta at the end of the process, but I have just discovered how helpful it is to try ideas out on a fellow writer first.
In what conditions do you work best? Over the weekend, when Mr Gingtertart is away and I can work undisturbed (except by the resident canines wanting to drag me out for fresh air & exercise)
One thing that always inspires you to create: walking the dogs in the countryside and watching the birds, the sky and the leaves turning colour.
One general thing you would really like to improve on: tighten up my plots, with a good hook at the start and a solid ending
Advice and/or questions regarding the creative process that you have for the other members of the community: Sometimes you write something in a hurry to meet a deadline, forcing yourself to write about a character or a plot that you don't really enjoy, and you post it, and you get ten times the feedback you ever had for fics you worked very hard on and really liked. Is this depressing or what?
A teaser from something you've got at least partially done:
I've just finished my merry_smutmas fic but again, that's for an anonymous exchange so I can't post anything from it. So here's a bit from my snape_after_dh fic.
Hermione glanced at Snape’s body, then hurried back to the tunnel entrance. Ron followed her. Harry gathered up the Invisibility Cloak, then looked down at Snape. He did not know what to feel, except shock at the way Snape had been killed, and the reason for which it had been done…
They crawled back through the tunnel.
Snape sucked in a harsh, wheezing breath and let his eyelids drop over his stinging eyes. He lay without moving for a minute, simply breathing and allowing his heart rate to recover.
He had been incredibly lucky. Voldemort could have killed him cleanly with an Avada Kedavra. Equally fortunately, the Granger girl had been too distracted to check his pulse or his reflexes.
Slowly, he pushed himself into a sitting position and muttered a spell to dispel the illusion of the great pool of blood on the floor. Enough remained to concern him. He touched the wound on the side of his neck. Even minimal movement made blood seep out again, in a sluggish trickle down inside of his collar. The shock coupled with the venom in his system left him feeling shaky and nauseous despite the bezoar he had swallowed before attending the Dark Lord.
