ATTN PUREBLOODS!
Hello, everyone! Alie here.
So! Over the last little while, Kate and I have been compiling a guide to Pureblood Society (in addition to our ridiculous family tree on Geni) that covers everything from canon family names and history, to the differences between the types of parties that society wizards and witches attend, and an in-depth explanation of cotillion (among many other things). It is not yet done, but as we are additionally building an accompaniment to it that requires participation--and some creativity!--from the kids with pureblood characters, I have gained Brandi's modly seal of approval in moving full steam ahead and getting you guys involved! Yay! :D It's called the FTH Pureblood Family Guide.
What this means! The Family Guide will act as established canon for the FTH pureblood families. It will showcase all related family information, including (but not limited to) net worth, the family motto (think the Blacks & Toujour Pur), and the location of the ancestral home (if there is one), as well as what the family is known for, and associated stereotypes!
Wait. How do I determine this stuff? We have seriously thought all this stuff through, and we created guidelines to help you determine where your family falls in pureblood hierarchy. First let me explain a couple of things. 1) These levels were devised based on British peerage (aka nobility), as well as comparable JKR!canon and already established FTH!canon, and 2) only the upper-class is limited to the families listed. Other families will likely fall within tier one and tier two in the middle-class; those listed are primary examples.
Upper-Class:
Duke being the highest ranking hereditary title in British peerage, there are only six titles of Duke in the UK (Cornwall, Edinburgh, Rothesay, Gloucester, York & Kent). Typically, these titles are distributed to members of the royal family. Comparably, there are six high-ranking families in pureblood high society, "wizarding royalty": the Blacks, the Malfoys, the Lestranges, the Boneses, the Notts & the Smiths. Lineage (muggle-influence-free) can be traced back 8+ generations.
Monetary assets (which includes property, heirlooms and artifacts): between 45,000,000G & 75,000,000G (Important Note: not all upper-class families would be at the top of this scale; generally they would be sitting closer to the middle of this range. Blacks and Malfoys would be the extreme)
Real estate limitations: Summer & winter homes, 2 to 3 vacation homes (Greece, the south of France, etcetera), hunting lodge, property for the purposes of inheritance
[Marquesses and Earls are the middle ranking hereditary titles in British peerage.] Highly respectable and still with considerable assets, the middle-class of pureblood high society would be where the majority of respectable families for high marriage would fall. Those sitting higher on the scale (tier one) of assets would be more likely to marry into the upper-class families, and often have multiple branches, for example, the Doges, the Flints, the Jugsons, the Rosiers, the Averys & the Parkinsons. Tier two would feature families such as the Prewetts, the Wolfes, the Vances, the Edgecombes, the Crabbes, the Goyles & the Bulstrodes. The third tier would be where most other families in this category would fall. Lineage (muggle-influence-free) can be traced back 6+ generations.
Monetary assets (which includes property, heirlooms and artifacts): between 20,000,000G & 45,000,000G
Real estate limitations: A family estate, 1 to 2 vacation homes (same as above), hunting lodge, [limited] property for the purposes of inheritance
[Viscounts and Barons are the lowest ranking hereditary titles in British peerage.] Net worth potentially (but not necessarily) still higher than the average witch/wizard (500G/month), respectability based on blood; previous generations may have married into upper-class families; purebloods in this faction have likely had their lineage reinstated at some point (some relative or another married a muggle or etcetera). Nobility in poverty would fall into this category. Families in the lower-class would be expected to match within tier three and tier two families. Examples of families that would fall into this category include the Weasleys, the Carrows, and the Gaunts.
Monetary assets (which includes property, heirlooms and artifacts): up to 20,000,000G
Real estate limitations: A family home (potentially estate), 1 vacation home/cottage at most, hunting lodge
I know that that's a lot of information, and if you are unsure of where your character's family falls in the grand scheme of things, or about anything else concerning the explanations, please don't hesitate to ask (here, of feel free to ping me on aim or bother me in chat)!
All that said, the Family Guide will require the following information of you:
