I'm Like a Bad Penny!
Less than twenty-four hours after the loss of Morag and Edwin I bring you the first of my new characters (though I'm still not sure who will follow or when it will be).

This is Matt O'Geary. He's in his early twenties and a complete and total Yankee. Though he was born in Korea he was adopted by an American family when he was three. He was raised as a Muggle in an extremely conservative and very religious setting a lot of which didn't take very well with Matt. Not the religion so much as the not very Christian nature of the teachings of the church.

Not that it really mattered much, he was effectively cut off by his father when they learned he was a wizard and though is mother defied her husband by getting assistance from her father to send Matt to school the relationships between Matt and his family are rather strained.

He's been working as a freelance reporter since graduating from Salem in 1998 and over the last few years he's started tracing his family as best as he could given the limitations in resources involved. He's finally traced everything back to the Sungs and Sung trading.

I'll see if I can figure out ways my characters can connect to him. Declan for one will be curious about him given his friendship with Yue.

Declan will likes get a chance or two. Ministry employees and anyone working in print journalism likely will as well since he's still doing freelance work.

That means Declan as a freelance columnist and Leah as a Ministry employee. I think they'll both like Matt. Would he visit Diagon Alley's shops regularly? That would add Zoe and Jamie as potential recurring acquaintances.

Yes absolutely on both counts with Declan and Leah. His connections to Yue (and by extension, Spencer) will probably help with both of them as well. As Matt gets used to living in Britain I imagine he will have reason to do quite a bit of shopping as he sets up his home and his life there.

Eee he seems cool! Also, makes me want to pick up a Salem alumn. Okay, here are people:

Yakov - will be friendly because he is, kind of indiscriminately. He will probably talk to Matt about American food.
Dean - I think they'd get on really well if they had cause to talk. Dean is friendly enough with Yue so it may happen. He's overcome his hatred of reporters by now, too!
Wayne - probably not much, except that they're both muggle-borns(-ish. Wayne's dad is a muggle and his mum a muggle-born, but they live in muggle society).
Barney - is totally up for any athletic game that may come up. He will play anything.
Mel - will be interested bc she loves talking to anyone foreign, and she likes reporters, partly because her dad is one (for a Quidditch magazine), and partly because she is all up on the news and politics.
Romilda - is good friends with Yue and can relate to being adopted, although her adopted dad is the best thing that ever happened to her, so that's a bit different.
Alex - is interested despite himself, but will still be an ass.
Lee - is friendly with Yue.
Valentina - probably nothing because she's shy and he speaks English.
Jade - probably nothing.
Evan - probably nothing.
Lucy - will be friendly.
Glenys - is sad about the experience he's had of religion, as she herself is very religious (Quaker) but in a good way.
Luke - could talk to him about Dr Who, but says he should watch Star Wars because that is the best.

I just realized that I didn't edit the app quite as well as I should have. I'll have to go in and tweak a few things but thank you! :D He would be thrilled to have someone he's known for a while around, I won't lie. :D

Matt likes to eat so he'd be happy to talk about food with Yakov.
I agree that Matt and Dean would get along well. Matt's also a friendly sort so they might be able to strike up a conversation over the journals as well.
I should have Matt see about getting a baseball game going at some point once the weather gets nicer. Then he can ask Barney to play.
He and Mel can chat about being American whenever she wants. He doesn't mind talking.
Yeah, Matt might not agree with Romilda on that point but I do think he would like her.
We'll have to see what occurs with Alex. :D
Matt may ask Lee questions about the history of Quidditch and such since he's used to watching Quodpot (though he never played).
I think that Matt would understand and appreciate Glenys' version of faith. In fact, their conversations have the potential of being very interesting.
Matt's always interested in learning more about popular culture, it's something that he's still constantly learning about.
And I agree with the others as well. :D

Barney has never played baseball but he would be happy to learn!

Lee is ready for any and all questions. He's kind of a nerd when Quidditch comes around.

Basically, I agree with everything :-)
