Mission Rank: A
Number of Agents Requested: Uchiha Itachi, Special Jounin 012110; Hagane Kotetsu, Chuunin 012050.
Description/Objectives: It is suspected that the village of Kirigakure is developing an offensive jutsu of immense destructive capabilities in a technical research laboratory located on the western village border on the main island of Water Country. Agents Uchiha and Hagane assigned for their respective areas of expertise. Agents are required to infiltrate the laboratory without being detected and confirm the existence of the jutsu. Agent Uchiha will copy it with his Sharingan. Agent Hagane will provide back up and support as necessary, as well as use his knowledge of traps to aid the infiltration. Any documents pertaining to the jutsu in question or related research must be seized or committed to memory. Even if no such jutsu is discovered, upon mission conclusion, the laboratory and all its contents be thoroughly destroyed in such a way as to appear accidental. No evidence of Konohagakure's involvement must remain.

Possible Hazards: The location of the laboratory ensures that Mist ninja will be both present and in force. The laboratory itself is known to be well-guarded by at least chuunin-level shinobi and the prevalence of high level traps and defensive jutsu is likely. Agents are cautioned to be extremely wary and to use the utmost skill in infiltrating the target location. Confrontation with enemy shinobi is advised against. It is imperative that Konoha not be implicated in this attack, as a retaliatory strike is a certainty if Konoha's involvement becomes known.

[Current Mood | scared]

Coda to the It Takes an Assassin Mission, immediately follows It Takes a Strong Sense of Irony

By the time the medics had gotten Genma and Raidou separated--not an easy task--loaded onto stretchers, and taken to hospital, Raidou's laughing fit had deteriorated to full-blown delirium. If anything, that just made the world a funnier place. He was fine when they took his mask, checked his eyes and talked over his head. Laughing when they felt his forehead and touched his skin and brushed his scar. Happy to watch the walls melt and the colours blur and the airwaves make interesting patterns that became words that became numbers that became leaves...

He was fine with everything until he turned his head and realized Genma wasn't there )

[Current Mood | cold]

Concluding chapter of the It Takes an Assassin Mission, immediately follows It Takes a Will of Iron

Sleep was a healing thing. A nap was refreshing, a good night's sleep could set your whole day right. Sleeping for fifteen hours wasn't nearly enough to completely heal them, but by the time Raidou woke and Genma stirred, it was clear that sleep had done them both a lot of good. Raidou's fever was lower, his wound looked better, and he tolerated another session of soaking and cleaning the injury with a great deal less pain. Genma was hungry when he woke, and what went down stayed down, to his and Raidou's deep relief. Poison metabolized, wounds scabbing over. Raidou's headache a faint echo of its former self. Genma's hip, when he finally got around to changing the bandage, was an ugly black and blue mess rent by long gashes, but none of the swelling or redness that said infection lurked within.

They showered. They washed their clothes, because there hadn't been enough spares not to, and neither of them were looking even slightly presentable. Genma used a quick-dry jutsu to get the things ready to wear. Then they put on game faces and masks and uniforms, and went down to see what Iijima had decided in the night about his wife.

Having looked over the evidence Genma and Raidou had brought him from their painful mission, he'd come to the conclusion that he was ready to be a widower. )

[Current Mood | exhausted]

Follows from It Takes a Lot Out of You

When Raidou woke up, it took him a long moment to really wake up. The first thing he realized was that he was not actually in his own room. The fact that he was lying on his side on a wooden floor was a fairly decent clue. His room didn't have a wooden floor. There was a hand underneath his head, cool fingers pressed gently against his temple. Raidou stiffened, frowned, cracked one eye open, and found himself face to face with Genma.

That would explain the hand.

Raidou became aware of a few things in quick succession. It was dark, his left hand was numb, his shoulder ached abominably, he could actually think clearly, and Genma did not look good. The last was the thing that really grabbed his attention. Raidou's eyes widened as they took in the state of his partner--horribly pale, vomit-covered, and completely dead to the world. The fact that he was breathing in a shallow, raspy way was the only proof Raidou had that Genma wasn't actually dead.

"Kid?" Raidou started up and discovered the reason his left hand was numb was because Genma was lying on it. He tugged his arm out from underneath his friend's lax body and shook it hard, forcing the blood to flow back into his fingers. Thanks to Genma's unique brand of tackle-healing, his right hand at least was fully sensate. Raidou put it to good use by pulling it carefully free from his sling--it hurt, but not enough to even register compared to the howling agony of earlier--and pressing two fingers to Genma's neck, searching out his pulse. It was there, thready and weak, but there.

He just wasn't waking up. )

[Current Mood | busy]

Follows from It Takes a Morning Person

It didn't take long to track down the 'rich guy's estate' Shinobu had tailed the wife to, and after a skirting look around the place, Raidou could see why they hadn't bothered to flee for the border. Between the Suna-nin still in residence, and the security set up the man of the house maintained, they clearly weren't worried by the possibility of an outside threat.

Mistake, thought Raidou with a slight grin as he scaled his hidden way up the wall. A henge was enough to keep him covered while he climbed to check the upstairs windows, slipping carefully around traps with the ease of a ninja who'd done this more then once. The weight of his shoulder and the cumbersome sling presented a minor problem, distracting him and throwing his balance ever so slightly off. He countered that by staying upright and using his left hand as well as his feet to stick to the weathered stone.

Seven windows--damn this was a big place--one minor run in with a Suna-nin, and a whole lot of dodged traps later, Raidou found the room their client's missing wife was currently calling her own. )

[Current Mood | sore]

Follows from It Takes A Partner

Raidou woke up with a headache. It wasn't his first return to consciousness -- Genma had kept his promise and woken him up periodically in the night to check he still had some cognitive function -- but it was certainly the most unpleasant so far. That probably meant the painkillers were well and truly out of his system. He shifted, rolling onto his side and winced as his shoulder confirmed the lack of pain relief.

Ouch.

And more ouch as bruises added their own little notes to the symphony of early morning pain. A sore neck and shoulders completed the music. Raidou found he had a word that went with it. "Argh," he said, very quietly, and sat up with a clink of dogtags. It didn't quite harmonize, but it certainly got the message across. The only other person to hear it, however, was Shinobu. Raidou blinked at the small rat sitting next to Genma, and watched the quick flurry of paws that went with a thorough whisker-cleaning. Bright black eyes regarded him for a moment as the summon stilled, and then the cleaning recommenced. Apparently Shinobu didn't find Raidou quite so interesting as he found the rat.

Raidou glanced up to check the light filtering in through the windows -- it was weak and grey, a watery dawn sort of light. A look at his watch confirmed it was still early in the morning. He'd slept for about seven hours total, maybe slightly less. Despite the renewed ache in his head and the very much awake pain in his shoulder, Raidou felt much improved. He was thinking clearly, moving okay (if a little stiffly) and his stomach, thank all the gods that Genma believed in, was fairly settled. In fact, he felt hungry.

Good sign.

He also needed to take a leak. )

Follows from It Takes an Assassin

As far as Genma was concerned it took far too long interviewing the civilian party guests and hired help, tracking down the party-goers who'd fled, and otherwise dealing with loose ends. The local law-enforcement showed up, not surprisingly, but took one look at the mayhem and the Konoha ANBU and decided it was a shinobi matter, best left to them to sort out. He and Raidou did manage to deputize the client's civilian bodyguards, so that helped a bit. But still it was several hours before Genma and Raidou had finished disposing of Suna nin and yakuza corpses, collecting information, getting the client settled in his well-protected bedroom suite under a doctor's care, and had a moment to themselves to start sorting out the disappearance of the wife.

They'd been given the use of a small set of rooms that had once been a nursery, complete with child-sized furniture and cute animals painted on the wall. At least they'd been given futons on which to sleep--much more comfortable on bruised and battered limbs than settling on the bare floor or trying to squeeze six-foot-tall bodies into beds meant for toddlers. Genma checked the room over thoroughly before finally slipping off his mask, then slowly, carefully unbuckling his armor and shedding his clothes. Every muscle had tensed and tightened, and the place where that kusuri-gama had struck was an ugly blotchy black and blue. He fingered it and winced, and was surprised he hadn't cracked a rib.

"Well," he sighed, and leaned against the wall, half undressed and entirely exhausted. "That was a piece of work. I couldn't believe how useless those bodyguards were. Someone seriously needs to have a talk with the client about his help. You think any of them were in on it, too, or were they just rent-a-ninja with no skills?"

[This mission is being reposted due to Madi's departure.]

Mission Desk
Mission Rank: A
Number of Agents Requested: Three (free assignation)
Description/Objectives: Targets (Iwahashi Sou, Doi Junpei, Yamauchi Fuyuta) are three particularly dangerous missing-nin have managed to escape from Earth Country. Stone-nin who betrayed their own village, these spies who managed to acquire some top-secret info and some rather dangerous kinjutsu from the Tsuchikage. Konoha's contacts in border towns picked up a lead that they are putting out offers in the criminal underworld to sell the information they have on the Tsuchikage to the highest bidder. Konoha wants to intercept this information, and they don't plan on buying it.

The missing-nin are thought to be hiding out somewhere in the forest between Konoha and Grass country. Finding them should be difficult, noting the skill level that would have been necessary for them to have made it this far. Stone-nin are skilled in camoflauge and guerilla techniques. Tracking them will require expertise. Track them down, extract information by any means necessary, kill, ensure the bodies will never be found.

Possible Hazards: The missing-nin themselves are dangerous enough, but the possibility that Grass, Stone, or another Hidden Village are also after these targets. Stealth and speed is of the essence.
Special Notes: Open to volunteers.

[Current Mood | curious]

Takes place the day following Pride and Falls and Baby the Stars Shine Bright

Genma arrived at the specified basement briefing room a good fifteen minutes early. Coffee in one hand, notebook in the other, he waited patiently, sipping at the scalding, bitter liquid and keeping a wary eye on every ninja who walked by. The Intel guy who was going to give them their briefing--or gal, he thought, not that it mattered--would undoubtedly be punctual. But it was his partner he was anxious to see. A new guy, Minamoto Touji, supposedly a sharp-tongued taijutsu specialist with a long scar across his face from some kind of duel that you weren't supposed to ask about. Well not actually new. He had a year and some months under the mask already, but he was new to Genma. That was enough to make him both curious and wary.

He glanced at the mission brief he'd received again. )

Acid Dogs of War: With a Vengeance [closed to Ryouma, Kakashi] [Feb. 7th, 2008|11:48 pm]

fallen_ryouma
[Tags|, , ]

Continued from Acid Dogs of War. Set in early January.

At the pace Kakashi set, the old war bunker was actually quite a bit less than half a day's run from their makeshift camp. It was also at the end of the trail they'd been following since they left Konoha--meaning that their targets had stopped there, and hadn't moved on.

That was enough to put the edge up Ryouma's spine. If he were running for his life, he might stop to camp overnight--if he'd run out of soldier pills and chakra, and had no other choice--and if he did, the bunker was the perfect defensible spot. But from the dogs' reports, their targets had been in the bunker since the previous night. Even if the chuunin was too exhausted to have run the night through, surely his buyers would have dragged him out at daybreak. The ANBU should still be racing to catch up, not crouching in the trees above the bunker and wondering what had gone wrong.

He tapped Kakashi on the shoulder and flicked three fingers across his palm in a hand-sign any jounin--at least any jounin who ran the really ouch missions--should know without having to think. Trap?

Set in early January. Mission assignment.

The mission wasn't the first A-rank posted on the bulletin board just outside the mission offices, but the bright crimson "Urgent" stamp had caught Ryouma's attention, and a single word in the description--one of the few whose kanji he knew without having to think--held his eye. Dispose. More to the point, dispose of him as absolutely and quietly as possible. That seemed pretty well tailor-made.

Ryouma didn't need to sweat through the rest of the mission objectives. If there was time for a briefing, he'd pick the details up then; if not, he'd learn them from his teammates along the way. He ducked through the office door, where the dark-haired chuunin manning the desk glanced up at him and demanded, "Mission number?"

"09837A," Ryouma said. "Marked urgent. Name's Tousaki Ryouma." He leaned against the door frame and watched curiously as the chuunin sorted through several scrolls, found the one he wanted, scribbled something, made an exasperated noise, and then tossed the scroll to Ryouma.

"It's marked as a three-man mission, but there's only one other volunteer yet. No time for a briefing. Your teammate's in apartment 309. Good luck."

That seemed to be it. With no prospect of a briefing on the horizon, Ryouma tried to puzzle out a few more details as he jogged up the stairs. ANBU, he knew those kanji, and traitor, and Konoha. He was still working on one that he thought might be information when he stopped in front of room 309.

Right next to the women's showers. Lucky dog!

[Current Mood | annoyed]

ANBU received their missions for a whole host of reasons. Sometimes you were selected for a specific skill set you had. A jutsu you'd mastered. A mindset you'd perfected. Sometimes it was something as simple as the way you looked. Sometimes you volunteered because you had bills to pay. Sometimes it was completely random.

Kakashi looked at the mission scroll in his hand once more and didn't sigh.

Mission Rank: A
Number of Agents Requested: Hatake Kakashi, Jounin 009720; Murakami Sumire, Jounin 010327
Description/Objectives: Target: Miyake Sou. A well-connected civilian from the Land of Lightning with known ties to the Village hidden in the Clouds has been reported to be selling high level intel obtained from Konoha. Verification is needed. Target must be detained and interrogated without alerting Cloud or revealing Konoha as the source behind the attack. Agents Hatake and Murakami assigned for their respective areas of expertise. Murakami will obtain the information in any way possible. Hatake will provide support and back up as necessary. A cover story is essential. Target is known to frequent local 'swinger' clubs, it is possible he may be accessed that way. Target is to be terminated once information is obtained.
Expected Hazards: Target is a civilian and thus poses little threat. The close proximity of the mission to Cloud requires all appropriate stealth measures must be taken, Cloud must not be alerted to the presence of Konoha shinobi.

Sometimes it was because the mission gods just liked to screw with you.

Kakashi rolled up the scroll and slid it into a pocket, absently slapping a seal over to top to conceal it. Reflex. Then he went to find his new mission partner.

Genius is Subjective, Jackassery Universal [closed to Kakashi and Ginta] [Jan. 31st, 2008|06:25 pm]

Ginta and Kakashi made their way to the target's room passing unseen through the quiet halls of the little inn. They were no more than swiftly moving shadows in the dimly lit halls, unmarked by any they passed. Once in the room Ginta looked around, pleased with himself. Their timing was perfect, the man wasn't back yet. The room was on the small side, but the furnishings were traditional, and the maids had already rolled up the night's bedding, so there were only the target's personal effects, a low tea-table, and a pair of floor chairs cluttering the room. Ginta couldn't help the wince when he trod upon the tatami in his shoes. No matter how many missions he took that forced him to do so, he couldn't quite get past the manners of his upbringing.

He marked where Kakashi hid, balanced on a beam that crossed the room's high ceiling. )

Ginta had heard good things about his mission partner, but then who hadn't heard good things about the legendary genius copy-nin Hatake Kakashi? He'd picked up the mission assignment scroll fresh from the desk of Yuta Ken, one of the chuunin in Intel that he'd been kind of stringing along. The guy was cute, and it really was useful having an in with the people who assigned missions. Although, reading the scroll, Ginta was starting to think he might have blown it with Ken.

Mission Rank: A
Number of Agents Requested: Katake Kakashi, Jounin 009720; Sakamoto Genta, Jounin 010061
Description/Objectives: Kawai Akira, Kumogakure jounin, has apparently broken ties with his village, following what Konoha Intel believes to be a crime of passion. He is known to master several highly-specialized Cloud ninjutsu, which Konoha would like to obtain and analyze. Agents Hatake and Sakamoto assigned for their respective areas of expertise. Sakamoto will draw out Kawai and induce him to use his specialized jutsu. Hatake will observe and copy. Kawai is to be terminated once jutsu are obtained.
Expected Hazards: Kumogakure Hunters are expected to be in pursuit of Kawai. Kawai himself is a skilled ninja who utilizes unknown lethal jutsu.

He might as well just paint a couple of big red bullseyes on his armor.

He found Kakashi's apartment. It was only a few doors down from his own. Interesting he'd never bumped into the guy much. Maybe one or twice on the way to a meeting or the showers, but really they didn't know each other. He knocked on the door. "Yo, Kakashi. It's Sakamoto Ginta. Open up."

Scarred for Life [closed to Genma and Raidou] [Jan. 7th, 2008|05:39 pm]

Backstory, set in May. Mission Assignment

The daimyou's son was dead, as planned. He was sprawled across the torso of a trussed up corpse, on a pile of cushions in one of the Magic Carpet Ride's back rooms for "special entertainment". Genma had been the special entertainment, and he'd entertained exactly as the privileged young man had hoped. He'd danced, he'd flirted, he'd winked, he'd fondled, he'd batted his pretty eyes and licked his talented lips and promised a thousand delights with a single swing of hips clad in low-slung leather jeans. And he'd let the creepy little bastard with his receding chin and gap-toothed, halitosis-laced kisses believe he'd succeeded in captivating the man everyone in the club had wanted only a few short hours ago.

And then when he was sure the photos had been snapped and the right people had been led to believe what Konoha wanted them to believe, Genma had poured a fizzing candy powder onto his tongue, kissed the princeling, and sent him to that slumberland from which there is no return.

Then the real work began. )

Konoe Yutaka, a current Chuunin Intelligence analyst for ANBU, has been under suspicion for some time regarding potentially traitorous actions. Recently he's been seen disappearing across the border, and key information from Konoha has been misplaced or gone missing entirely. Higher-ups would like to see him brought to "justice" now - find him, retrieve the scrolls he was seen vanishing over the border with, determine what information he has been trading to the enemy, how long he has been doing so, and who he has given that information to. Also figure out what the enemy is planning to do with all the information gathered from Konoe. When all information has been retrieved, dispose of him as absolutely and quietly as possible.
