Baby, The Stars Shine Bright [tag to Genma]
Sumire could count exactly how many times she'd woken up in the HQ Apartments screaming into her pillow on one hand. It had been so real, the heat, the burn from the ropes around her wrists, how she couldn't swallow because her mouth was so dry that her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth. Lucid dreams, hah! They could go to hell along with unduly short mission reports and Shibata.

Of course, all the answers to the physical pains in her dream were easily explained. She'd left her heater on too close to the bed, slept with too many thick quilts, wound some of her sheets around her hands as she flailed in her sleep, her mouth had opened slightly during the night and dried out.

The screaming hadn't helped either.

Once awake enough to pull herself from the mass of covers and get a drink of water, Sumire realized that sleep was not going to be coming to her for a long while tonight. She leaned against her counter and looked at her half-lit room; everything was still and peaceful, but as welcoming as a horde of Iwa-nin.

She snatched a book from her shelf without looking, bundled herself up in a thick sweater, long jacket, thin gloves and trooped upstairs to the roof with an electric lantern. Fuck Sleep. Tonight, she'd be awake until dawn and watch the goddamned stars, maybe catch up on her leisure reading.

And who knew? Maybe she'd have an epiphany on how to better stomp Shibata's ego into the ground, or maybe she'd finally find out what happened to Gallant Jiraiya.

Genma was having an unquiet night of his own. It had started quite pleasantly with several intimate hours shared with a cock-sure Hunter named Saburo. But then they'd fallen asleep and Saburo turned out to be one of those clingy guys and it gave Genma a bad turn when the other man draped his arms around him. They'd parted company around 2:00 AM and Genma'd tried to go back to sleep. But the damage had been done. Now his sleep was plagued with captures and fighting and watching Kobo get his head sliced off and the blood fountaining up.

Of Seijuro's horrified, broken eyes.

Of that masked Iwa interrogator, and the hammer coming down again and again. His fingernails had splintered. The skin had split, black and not looking like a hand at all anymore.

Of being locked in a tiny, tiny black cell, too low to sit up, too narrow to lie down, with his broken, scabbed wrists chained to the wall.

He woke up groaning, with his hands clutched close to his body, aching and burning so much he had to dry-swallow one of the little light green pills the medics had given him for nights like this.

Even with every light in his apartment on, it was too enclosed. But it was winter, and cold. He tugged on a thermal undershirt, and a heavy, hooded sweatshirt, made himself a thermos of tea, tugged gloves onto his aching hands, and headed up to the roof. Where he could look at the stars. The very far away stars.

Sumire's attention turned to the creak of half-rusted metal as the roof door opened. She'd always reasoned they kept it that way for a reason -- sometimes you didn't want to be at business end of a shuriken or kunai -- like an alarm for weary, half-broken ninja trying to recollect themselves.

Not like Sumire, of course. She wasn't broken, she just wasn't... sleepy. Still, she turned off the electric lantern, closed her book and kept an eye on the shape of the shadow in the snow. It looked familiar... still, she didn't want to draw attention to herself it was a good way to get information, besides.

Sumire was glad that her coat blended in so well with the shadows and waited. The person attached to the shadow rounded the corner to where Sumire sat, and she couldn't hide the surprise in her voice.

"Genma...?" Why was he awake? It looked as though no one in ANBU was able to sleep tonight, if he had troubles too. She shifted and rested an elbow on a raised knee, looking at him curiously in the dark.

Sumire was up here? Genma looked at her, offered her a tiny, ironic bow, and angled across the snowy roof tiles to where she sat.

"Yep, it's me, the one and only."

He brushed some snow away and settled himself next to her, feeling the cold seep into the backs of his thighs.

"I made tea. You want some?"

If she was up here on the roof at the darkest hour of the night, in weather so cold it made the hairs in your nostrils freeze with each breath, presumably she had her reasons. He hoped they weren't too similar to his own.

Sumire nodded her head in minuscule tilt that hardly even moved the young woman's long bangs. Perhaps her hair had frozen up here. She flicked the light back on so he could see her.

"You're beginning to turn into my midget, bringing tea everywhere, Genma," she chided gently, breath puffing. She hid her hands in the large sleeves of her jacket and nodded.

"I'd love some tea, though. What are you doing up? You have a mission tomorrow afternoon, don't you?" Sumire asked with a certain amount of concern in her voice. There were some perks to being an Intel agent, after all, especially when one just had to keep an eye on one's friends.

She shifted on the cushion she'd brought along with her, comfortably. At least she wasn't freezing her butt off like a certain smarmy ninja was.

"Your midget? I'm like twice your size." Genma carefully unscrewed the lid on the thermos, inhaling the sweet, grassy scent of tea that clouded out into the frosty air.

"I've got a mission tomorrow," he agreed as he poured carefully into the thermos cup. Ignored how his hands shook. How they ached and didn't want to grip the cylinder or steady the cup. How the sweat beaded on his lip despite the chill, and his teeth clenched against one another.

"But you know..." He didn't look at Sumire. "Woke up. Couldn't get back to sleep. Thought some fresh air might help."

She'd known him long enough to guess any number of things about what that might mean.

He set the cup carefully on the tiles within reach of Sumire's hand, stretched his long legs out in front of him, and tossed his head back, so that his hair, hanging loose and unbound, fell back from his face.

"You okay with me drinking straight from the thermos?"

"Firstly," Sumire corrected him with a little smile. "You are not twice my size, get that out of your head. Secondly, I was talking about little Hayate." Now that that was out of the way, she closed her eyes and breathed in.

She laughed a little to herself, the sound harsh to her own ears, "I know how you feel." With gentle fingers, she plucked the cup up and held it close to her after waiting for Genma's hands to move. Their unspoken rule about her wrists and his hands carefully observed. "Besides, I don't mind; it's your tea, you know."

"Hayate huh?" Genma said, and sipped from the thermos; clouds of steam rose up to envelop his face, and he sighed contentedly when he'd swallowed. "Hayate's barely old enough to shave. I don't think anyone's gonna confuse me for him."

He leaned back, sipped another mouthful of tea. There was Orion's glittering belt, sparkling in the frosty air, and Gemini rising behind him. High overhead Subaru winked and twinkled from its distant perch in the heavens.

"How come you know my mission schedule anyway?" he asked, glancing at Sumire, then back to the stars. "You work on the doc prep or something?"

"Yeah," she admitted and made herself more comfortable, as she sipped the hot tea. She looked up to try and find Polaris, not quite looking at Genma.

"My seal's up in the left hand corner for that kind of stuff. You know what my seal looks like don't you? You should after three years." Sumire admonished him gently, as though slightly offended that he would dare forget such an important symbol. A little part of her was miffed, though she kept her tone teasing.

"My briefing's not til 1100 tomorrow," Genma said, glancing at the positions of moon and stars in the sky. "Well today. Later. You know what I mean. So unless you think I'm psychic, I don't know how you expect me to have seen your seals on documents I haven't got yet."

He blew a thin stream of air through pursed lips, watching it curl and cloud as it wafted over the gently steaming thermos mouth. The bottle was warm in his hands for which he was glad. It soothed away the ache in his knuckles a little, and the hot tea was helping him focus and feel more settled.

Mission tomorrow. Sumire now. Nightmares fading back into the hell from whence they sprang.

Sumire made a non-committal noise and kept an eye on the stars. "I only know the little bit I was given about it, so I'm afraid I'm not much help, sorry."

As though in afterthought, watching the deep shadows in the moon, she added, "But don't worry, I checked over the information in triplicate, you know I won't lead you wrong." Unlike many other of the Intel agents she worked with, Sumire had a vested interest in keeping the Cannon Fodder branch of ANBU alive.

That's where all her friends were, after all.

"It's good. I trust you," Genma said, and watched a wisp of cloud scudding past the waning moon.

His mission was with an agent he hardly knew. A man better known for his scarred face and arrogant temper than anything else. Not that this was a hard mission, by the looks of it, but knowing someone you could trust had set it up always helped, especially when you were taking an unknown partner into the field.

"I'm glad," she replied quietly, feeling relief flood through her and feeding that little attention-demanding part of her psyche. Sumire played with the spine of her book, rubbing over the golden characters.

After a few more minutes of craning her neck Sumire looked down and rolled the sore muscles, sighing tiredly. It was going to be a bitch of a day if she didn't get to sleep soon although, she could just take it out on Shibata early and work a half day. She still had time off saved up, didn't she?

"You're sleepy," Genma said, watching Sumire's seated calisthenics and noting the tired lines around her eyes. The moonlight probably wasn't doing her complexion any favors, nor his own, but she especially looked pale and frayed, with shadowed eyes and a discontent expression. Her sigh sounded almost defeated.

Evidently he wasn't the only one having a rough night.

"Maybe you should sleep. Are you cold?"

"I'm fine... not cold, not tired," Sumire waved off his concern. "I'm just... I don't know." The sweater was making her too hot and she picked at the collar, pulling it away from her neck. It felt like it was choking her, when had she bought this sweater anyway? Maybe it was finally too small for the slim kunoichi.

She could still feel the bite of ropes as they rubbed raw against her wrists, the grip of fingers against her neck. Sumire shook her head to clear herself of the phantom feelings and tried smiling at Genma. "Just not feeling a whole hell of a lot right now."

"Yeah," Genma said, nodding and not quite looking at Sumire. That empty smile was one he knew a bit too intimately himself. Not feeling a whole hell of a lot he thought, or feeling way too much? He shivered, hunched up his shoulders, stretched, then lay back on the roof tiles, feeling the iciness of them bore through his sweater. Cold was good. Cold could keep you grounded.

"Well I'm cold. It's cold up here." He blew a thin stream of air through pursed lips and watched it cloud and dissipate. Far above, far out of reach, stars glittered brightly in a deep black sky. Plenty of room to breathe out here. He was perfectly happy to stay outside and shiver.

"Should've worn a thicker sweater," she replied simply, as if that solved his problem of being on the roof at too late an hour in too cold a temperature. It didn't solve hers, of course. She had a perfectly thick sweater, even if it was getting a bit tight. She tucked her feet under her a little more and looked from Genma back to the sky.

"It's pretty tonight, huh? Quiet too," her lips quirked into a little, slightly bitter smile. "You'd think we'd be able to sleep like babies in this kind of weather."

"Yeah," Genma agreed. "You'd think a guy as smart as me could figure that out on his own, but I guess not." He tucked his hands under his armpits, trying to ease away the ache of the cold that somehow found its way through the thick leather of his gloves. Gloves that hid the knobby bones, the lattice of scars, the odd fingers that twisted away from true.

"Maybe it's too quiet to sleep," he said. Too quiet was almost worse than too noisy. Made you remember too dark rooms with too thick walls and too little air...

He really didn't need to go down that path, and neither did Sumire. That's why they were up here getting frostbitten, right? So that he could go on his mission and she could go to her coding tomorrow, and not be weighted down by memories better forgotten?

He was pretty sure he knew why she took almost no missions anymore. Looking at her delicate profile bathed in silvery moonlight, he wondered if it was the right choice though. It was getting back to active duty that had saved him. Being in the field kept your mind focused on the now and away from the dangerous past.

"You ever miss running missions?" he asked.

She was quiet for a long while after his question. Did she miss it? Her breath puffed in the chilly air. It hadn't been very long since her mission with Hatake to Lightning Country.

Stupid Genma, he'd asked that question and now all she could think about was that ugly (and very dead) Miyake. Stupid, stupid. She curled a long bang around her finger, over and over.

Still, there was excitement in the field, and idiots here in the offices at home. "Always," she said finally, with a slight frown. "It's better than being cooped up with office politics, I get tired of hearing who's fucking who and who double crossed who... it gives me a headache." Especially chuunin mailgirls, they were the worst perpetrators and if one of them tittered one more time..!

"Yeah?" Genma asked, and wondered if he'd hit a sore spot. She had had a mission recently, after all. Not one she'd told him much about, other than it was a typical seduction run. They'd commiserated over the pain in the ass it was when you had a handler you didn't know, and how nasty some of the targets could be. But they hadn't talked specifics, and they hadn't talked since she'd been back. Not about her mission, anyway.

But maybe it had given her a taste of what she was missing. Her words, at least, said as much.

"You could always come back," Genma said, with a little shrug of his shoulders. "Re-apply to field ops. Heck, transfer to Hunters. Your taijutsu's more than good enough."

She missed it, but she wasn't stupid. Sumire gently shook her head. "No, I miss it, but I know I still don't trust myself with that." There were still too many fears, too many uncertainties she felt in herself on the field.

Sumire wondered if they'd ever go away. They certainly didn't used to be so loud and gut wrenching in mid-mission before that little incident. "Besides, the missions they give me every once in a blue moon, even if this last one was with Hatake Sleeping Beauty, are enough to keep me from upending my desk."

Well, her decision was her own to make. If she wasn't ready, she wasn't ready, and Genma certainly wasn't one to push.

"I'd go nuts if I had to do your work. Inside all day and shit. But damn, you had a mission with Kakashi?" He shuddered and didn't hide the look of revulsion on his face. "He's a spoiled ass. If I had to take missions with him..."

And then it hit him. Her mission had been a seduction, so Kakashi must have been her handler. How perfectly awful.

"Gods, Sumi-chan, how did you stand it?"

"I laid back and thought of Konoha," she grinned at him. "But hey, at least I got to slap him a good one this go around." She unwound her hair from her finger and started the process over.

"Really, you'll be surprised to know he wasn't so terrible. I wouldn't exactly jump at the opportunity again, but, it was better than it could've been." Sumire shrugged, considering. "Even though he was late by about six minutes. I wanted to throw the target at him, bare-assed and everything by that point." Still, shit happened, and at least she hadn't had to come home with.. oh yes.

"He healed my hickies for me, so I forgave him."

"He healed your hickies?" Genma snorted out a surprised laugh. "Well shit, maybe I ought to give the guy a little more credit. That's actually pretty damn decent for an ero-mission support guy."

There'd been more than a few times he'd had a handler on one of his seductions register open distaste at the marks some of the targets liked to leave on their 'conquest's' body. Genma'd gotten pretty skilled at healing his own hickies and scratches and bite marks.

Maybe it was the difference between being a man running those types of missions and a woman? Certainly for a lot of men it was easier to have sympathy for a woman who used her body to get at her target. Although mission control was pretty careful not to assign blatantly homophobic agents to handle a gay seduction, it was never exactly easy.

Actually it wasn't easy for any of them, the men and women who played bait like Genma and Sumire, or their handlers. But it was the job, and some were better at it than others. Genma was a good playboy. If Kakashi was a good handler, well then....

"A good handler is rarer than a gold-plated Hokage fart. Maybe I'll have to hate him a little less."

"Maybe," Sumire agreed and gave him a half-smile. "He was still, well, Hatake on the way back." The trip home had been uneventful, sort of, filled with half-muttered, half-listened to remarks on the way.

"He made fun of my bottle of shampoo," she laughed. "But excuse me if I don't want to wash my hair with scent erasers or soap," the kunoichi wrinkled her nose.

"What about you? Your missions treating you any kinder?" Hhe had better be careful, lest she be the one that did the debriefing. He'd have hell to pay if it was in another hospital room.

"He uses soap to wash his hair?" Genma made a face. "That explains why it sticks up like one of those pot scrubbers. I might use scent-erasers, but at least I know better than to use soap on my hair." He tossed his head back, feeling his hair settle around his shoulders. Long hair was for both the women and the men who ran ero-missions, a real asset. Almost a weapon. Of course, not a weapon the way Sumire's hair was, he thought.

"I've got one tomorrow--well you know that. It looks like a piece of cake guard mission. Don't even know why it's getting kicked up to ANBU. Don't know the guy I'm running it with though. Somebody or other Touji." He sat up and stretched his arms out in front of him, cracking his spine and shoulders with an audible series of pops. "Guess I"ll find out in the morning."

Someone other than Touji? She wondered what happened to get him replaced. Then the last sentence made realization dawn upon her. "Oh gods have mercy. Morning," Sumire whined and rested her forehead on her knees. "I'm going to be useless tomorrow if stupid sleep doesn't come soon." She knew she could just go downstairs, roll around in her bed until sleep came, if it came, or...

"Mm, I still have the sleeping pills I used last time I had to share a bed with Kakashi," she murmured, planning. Sleeping-pill sleep might not be the most restful, but it would do. "Oh wait, can't do that either. In seven to eight hours, I'll need to be in my office." Goddamned catch-22s.

"You didn't say you had to share a bed with him," Genma said, looking at Sumire with raised eyebrows. "Damn, you'd need anti-nausea meds too for that."

Sleeping pills were common in the bathroom cabinets and bedside drawers and medkits of most of the ninja in ANBU. Sometimes you needed them because you were trying to adjus your sleep cycle to match the needs of a mission. Often you needed them because you were trying to keep your missions from coming back to you in your sleep.

"Take a half one?" Genma suggested. "Depends on how tired you are, but it might be enough to get you to sleep okay until you have to get up."

The pill he'd taken himself before coming up to the roof was starting to kick in at last, taking the edge off the ache in his hands, and blunting his consciousness into an artificial calm. It was for pain, not sleeplessness, but at three in the morning it was nearly as sedating. Genma yawned, blinked, and yawned again.

"Maybe bed?"

"Mm, maybe. Going back to the subject of Kakashi, he's lucky I didn't suffocate him with my breasts," she frowned. "You, at least can probably do with bed, I think I'll sit up a little longer. Shake off the heebie-jeebies."

There. She admitted it. Sort of. She was still scared over that stupid, dead fool in Kaze no Kuni. He was like the boogie man. Sumire finished her tea and pulled her arms into to her coat, folding them under her chest. "But you go to bed. Missions tomorrow need sleep now."

"Wow, you really want to get rid of me, huh? Send me to bed and leave you alone?" He yawned again and pushed himself more upright, trying to force the sleepy edge away.

"You sure you don't want to tell me what's bothering you?"

It was a direct question, but sometimes the direct ones were best, and they'd known each other long enough and well enough that they were allowed to be bunt with each other. Even when it hurt.

Sumire raised both eyebrows so high they vanished into her bangs. "It's just that. The usual. The only thing that wakes me out of a dead sleep. Satisfied?"

He knew what she meant, didn't he? He'd better, after all this time. She didn't have to explain it in all its gory detail, did she?

The back of her throat tingled and constricted, and she swallowed around the lump that decided to develop there. Sumire knew needed to get a good, solid hold on herself.

Genma sighed and frowned. "Yeah, I know," he said at last. He knew as much as Sumire had been willing to tell him. As much as he'd been able to glean from some surreptitious poking around. They had more in common than a love of tea and a few years in service to ANBU, he and Sumire. He had no doubt with her access to files working in Intel she'd read the records of his capture, too. A lot in common.

They just never talked about it.

"It's one of those nights for me, too," he said at last, as close to openly discussing the taboo topic as he'd ever come with her.

He stared at the cold and the stars and the iridescent shreds of icy cloud high in the stratosphere.

"Those pills help, you know."

She sighed, they were both kind of pathetic, weren't they? "I know they do. I just... don't want to depend on them and figure this out and beat it for myself. Someday." Now, if only someday would come soon so she wouldn't end up on the roof in the middle of winter, counting constellations.

"I've never, you know," she added after a few minutes. "Read your file. I mean... I wanted to, but I didn't." It had been an exercise in denying temptation, that was for sure. Under her voluminous coat, she scratched at her wrists, willing an annoying tingle of almost-pain away. She was starting to smell 'desert' again.

"You didn't?" That was a surprise. "I"m surprised at you, Princess. I figured you'd snooped through all that stuff ages ago."

If she was telling the truth, and Genma had no reason to doubt her, then she only knew what the rumor mill spread about him. That he'd been captured and tortured and brought back from the dead, and you didn't dare fuck with his hands unless you wanted to die young. That much was pretty much common knowledge, if you poked hard enough, although by now, nearly four years on, not too many people connected the story of the mission he'd been on and Genma himself.

It was odd she was bringing it up now, though.

"You asking my permission?"

"No," Sumire said flatly. "I always figured that if you wanted to tell me you would. The same for me, but we've both been very good about not upsetting the taboos, huh?"

She pulled a hand out of the safe warmth of her jacket and coiled a long lock around her finger. It wasn't the same as binding someone else up in her hair, and thank heaven. She pursed her lips slightly and looked down at him. It was, if one thought about it long enough and hard enough, kind of silly that two strangers like them had adopted this kinship. Genma was like the extra brother she'd never had (except when he teased about Tsukishiro and Aoi's apparent hotness, then she wanted to kick him in the chin), and she didn't mind it if he came around with his big, hungry, puppy eyes.

"You know, I was just thinking. You're going on a mission tomorrow and I decided I was going to make a seafood curry." She grinned at him. "Too bad for you, hee hee."

"Oh now that's just unfair," Genma complained, pouting at Sumire with all the offended hurt of a child watching someone else get the ice cream he was sure had been intended for him.

"Will you make me curry when I come back? I'll buy the prawns." Because curry... curry was one of Genma's favorite things in the world to eat, second only to kabocha and cock, but that's not really the same kind of eating and of course Sumire knew that. "I mean, I'm gonna be eating rat bars and you're having seafood curry? It's completely unfair."

He didn't answer her about the question of his file, or hers. Some things were taboo for a reason.

"Well, maybe, it depends on how long you leave me," she mock-sobbed and hid her face behind her sleeve. "Otherwise, I'll just have That Person to bother, and it does get boring when they don't respond." She hadn't bothered him properly since the shirt incident (which, coincidentally, she'd never returned).

But, if you come home with not a scrape on you, then I'll make you curry. Promise."

"I haven't seen the specs yet, but I probably won't be gone more than a week or so, right? You should know, if you worked on the prep." Genma sighed. "And if I come home with a scrape or two?" Because honestly, how many Hunter missions brought their agents back unscathed? There was a reason these missions went to ANBU and not the regular forces. "How about if I come back with no injuries that require a medic's attentions? Can I have curry then?"

He still wasn't entirely sure, even after three years, how to take Sumire's and Yuzuya's antipathy. Personally he liked them both. There was no reason for it. Sometimes he thought it was just sublimated lust, but other times it really did seem to be a genuine mutual dislike. Walking the line that let him be friends with both was a challenge sometimes.

"All right, all right," Sumire conceded. "So long as you don't have to see the medics, then you can have curry. Look at me being generous!" She laughed lightly. Snow was beginning to fall again.

"We should go to bed," she said again, looking up at the snow. "Before we catch our deaths." It was probably smarter, anyway, going in before they froze to the roof like a pair of idiots.
