Remember when..? {Atten: Jou & Hisoka}
Without sound the jagged tear opened black and endless against the blue sky, a second later it had healed up leaving no sign of its ever being there in the first place. However the creature it had allowed to cross through its dark maw soared the sky above the market area of the town below it, eyes watching the people moving through it idly. He wasn't looking for anyone purposely, but when he spotted a certain blond, the massive clawed wingspan dipped to tilt the body into a downward angle to take him down closer.

Affirming the identity of the young man, he briefly considered the choices and promptly decided on the next course of action to be put into effect, starting with once again lowering his flight to brush the tip of one wing down over the top of the blond's head to let him become aware that there was something there with him now. The next action would be the boy's, depending on it, he would decide what course would follow -- or rather one might say just how long the rest of his time here would be, extremely short or perhaps lasting for just a few hours longer, provided they weren't rudely interrupted in the course of their little game.

Gliding through the buildings just above and a little behind the boy, he waited rather patiently he thought until the young man had left the crowded market firmly behind and had entered into the domain of the empty park on what must be the route to wherever the blond currently lived.

Once he was out of sight of the roads, he moved to descend, brushing one wing hard enough he judged to knock the boy off balance enough to know that the earlier event was not just his imagination. Landing on the path before the blond, he waited with silent interest to see what his reaction would be now that it was undeniable that something was definitely within the area around him now. He would continue to toy with the other for as long as he thought it safe, unless he grew too boring, then he would end it with the boy's death. It would be an empty but rather pleasing meal regardless he rather thought.

Okay, Katsuya, that was not your mind.

Jou scrambled up quickly, glancing around. Imagining feathers was one thing, but he was pretty sure his own imagination wasn't strong enough to knock himself off balance. Not to mention, his back was pounding a bit from where whatever it was had hit him with enough force to send him sprawling out on the ground. Still, just because he couldn't see anything didn't mean that there wasn't anything there. He knew that much from hanging around with dead people.

Curling his hands into fists, he forced himself to breath calmly, his eyes narrow as he glanced around. Falling into a fighting stance was as natural to him as breathing, but he wondered how he was going to hit anything that he couldn't see. Hell, even if he could see it, were fists really going to work against anything supernatural?

Dammit, where are your crazy supernatural friends when you need them?

He waited a moment after the boy settled into a fighting stance, but when there proved to be nothing more forthcoming after that he lifted off from the path to circle the park briefly once, both to make certain there was no one headed toward this park to interrupt and to gain a better position to knock the boy down out of the stance he'd taken.

He wanted more to happen before he ended this little game really, but if the boy still refused to respond in any entertaining way, he would just have to settle for what he'd gotten so far and leave it at that. It wasn't like it mattered much what the boy did really, the end result wasn't going to differ unless he lingered overlong and they were rudely interrupted before he could put a proper finish to it.

Jou's eyes widened as he felt something strike him hard in the back again --for fuck's sake, was he fighting an invisible bus, or what?-- throwing out his left arm to try and catch himself as he slammed against the pavement. Catching himself on his palm, he grunted as he felt something snap in his wrist, the pain sharp and instant, but he forced himself to roll over, cradling his wounded arm close to him. With the adrenaline rushing through his veins and covering up his pain, it was hard to tell if his wrist was really broken or just sprained, but he didn't really want to stick around and find out.

Scrambling up, he held his left wrist with his right to keep it steady, his eyes darting around as if maybe he could see whatever was attacking him this time. He should try and make a run for it, but he doubted whatever was attacking him would let him go that easily. Still, he had to try. He wasn't some damsel in distress, waiting for someone to rescue him. Fuck that, he was going to try and run and ditch. It was the least he could do.

"Jou!" Hisoka cried out sharply as he ran forward, drawing his gun to click the safety off and rack the slide before he came to a skidding halt next to him, his face ashen. "Are you all right?" He brought the gun up, willing his hands not to shake as he saw the limp angle of Jou's wrist and the way he was cradling it with his other hand, his eyes narrowing fiercely as he tried to get a decent shot at the hollow.

The avian hollow's gaze slid from its previous target to the new arrival at the cry and noting the small gun being pointed in his direction, back-winged to gain altitude for the moment.

He would wait for the moment to see if the boy really thought he could hurt him with the pistol, no matter the urge now present to destroy both blonds now beneath him. Once action happened on their part, he would move to finish this little game.

Relief filled Jou's mind at the sound of Hisoka's voice, though it was short-lived. While he was terribly grateful that Hisoka had come to his rescue, it also meant Hisoka was in danger now too. And he knew he was going to be no good. Even if his wrist hadn't been broken, he still couldn't fight something he couldn't see.

Shifting slightly, he moved closer to Hisoka, though trying not to get too close and get in the way. "Now what?" he hissed, trying to keep his voice quiet so whatever there was out there couldn't hear him.

Oh. Man, Hisoka hated to admit this, but-- "I have no idea," he hissed back softly, his eyes sharp and bright on the hollow, his lips peeling back from his teeth. "I don't have the weapons to fight these things, and gods only know when the proper type of shinigami'll show up. They can only be in so many places at once." He breathed in slowly, his eyes narrowing, and raised the gun carefully. The bird-hollow wasn't attacking anymore, no, but its behavior now was almost more unnerving; it was just hovering there, and since when were hollows so intelligent? Hisoka caught his lower lip between his teeth, tightened his grip on the gun, and breathed out as he fired, right into the hollow's eye, its shriek splitting his ears.

The injury wouldn't kill him but it was infuriating enough to make him forgo any further lingering over the two, he moved to circle the two, gaining more height before turning into a dive toward the boy who'd caused the injury. He'd kill him first and then he'd go after the injured companion afterwards.

Hisoka had a split-second to yell for Jou to get out of the way and push him aside before the huge hollow was on him, talons flashing. Hisoka fired instinctively, managing to take out its other eye and get a few shots into one of its wings before it was close, way too close, and he flung up both of his arms, feeling one set of talons slash his forearms to ribbons before he realized he left his belly totally exposed.

He felt the talons dig in deep, pain exploding across his torso as the first talon in the back went deep enough to curve up under his ribs, ripping up through his stomach while the other three talons dug in between his ribs. His gun fell from limp, bloodied fingers and he felt his lungs puncture. The bird dropped him and his head cracked against the concrete, his vision spinning blackly from pain and shock as dark, dark blood spread out onto the street under his chest.

Jou hissed when Hisoka shoved him back, catching himself with his good hand, his mouth opening to ask Hisoka what the hell was going on though the words died in his throat. Shock narrowed his vision until the only thing he saw was Hisoka shooting at nothing and then suddenly the bleeding began.

It started at his arms, deep gouges running along his skin and flesh, and god, was that bone he saw, and then suddenly it started on his torso as well. Jou's stomach churned as he watched something dig into Hisoka, shredding his shirt and effectively gutting him. He vaguely heard Hisoka's gun clatter to the pavement but his eyes were only on Hisoka as he fell, his head cracking against the pavement. And the worst part was that he knew, he just knew that Hisoka had done this all to save him.

Swallowing hard to keep the bile down --he probably would have vomited if not for the dulling shock-- he scrambled closer, not caring any more that there was something there ready to kill him as he pulled Hisoka partially on his lap with his good hand. He barely even felt the blood soak into his jeans. "Hisoka?" he rasped, brushing his bloodied fingers through his bangs. "Hisoka, open your eyes. Come on, open your eyes for me."

He didn't even notice he was crying.

Hisoka blacked in and out of consciousness, fighting to stay awake. The wrenching tear of agony up through his torso when Jou moved him helped a little. The world spun dizzily and he tried to gasp for air through his ruined diaphragm and lungs, gripping weakly at Jou's elbow. Pain made his vision swim, but he flinched as one of Jou's tears fell onto his face. He reached up shakily and touched Jou's cheek, his lips forming Jou's name as he fought to draw breath, feeling his body work furiously to put his internal organs back in order, his lungs filling again first before the healing quickly moved down his torso.

"Jou," he finally managed to wheeze as he felt his insides knitting together, the pain making him lightheaded. He cupped Jou's cheek, leaving a bloody handprint on his face, before he fisted his hand the shoulder of Jou's shirt, trying to pull himself up a little, trembling as the ruined tendons and muscle in his arms protested, his grip weak and shaky. "Gun," he said wetly, and coughed, trying not to spit blood all over Jou too much as he fought it out of his lungs. He felt for the weapon and forced his hand to close around it and lift it, trying to sit up a bit; he knew the hollow was still around somewhere, and it would be a hell of a waste to go through all of that just to have to sit and watch as it ripped Jou limb from limb. The thought sent a cold shock of clarity through his brain and his eyes narrowed, his vision steadying along with his grip as his arms healed slowly and he raised the gun, looking around for their attacker.

Jou trembled with intense relief when Hisoka moved against him and then wheezed his name. Tightening his arms around him, he buried his face against his hair for a moment, feeling the blood dry stickily on his cheek. "Ssh, you're still..." he mumbled against his hair, his voice sticking awkwardly in his throat. "Please. Please, don't die."
