RP: Thoughts in a park
When: 11 February, 2004
Who: Richard Summerby
Where: Whimsic Park
Private/Public: Private
Rating: TBD

Susan sat on the park bench in the park and closed her eyes. Who knew that she could have an awful night and a wonderful night all in the same night. When she had arrived at the flat that night, there was just a sense that she wasn't wanted there but she had stuck it through. She had come to terms with the fact that she cared deeply about Richard, she just worried that since he had Lavender he didn't need her. Still when she had been riding on that broom with him, those worries had flown away. It was brilliant and had her heart racing just being with him.

The night had been cool and clear and although they hadn't talked very much, Susan had a sense of contentment she hadn't ever felt with anyone. Still she cursed herself for not having the courage to tell him that. So here she in the park mooning over the man wondering how she could tell him how she felt. Buck up Suze, not something you should keep to yourself

Susan looked up as she heard a low voice speak to her, when she saw it was Richard she smiled brightly as her melancholy dissipated. "Hi there," She looked a little confused but patted the bench indicating he should sit with you.

"You're not stupid, you did manage to find me after all."

Richard shrugged, "Yeah, I found you, and then I spoil the effect with a stupid line like that." He shook his head, "So anyway, how are you doing?"

"Don't worry about it," Susan found that a cheesy line didn't bother her since he had come looking for her.

"I'm good, been thinking about things. What about you? How are things?" She asked nervously.

"Things are... better," Richard replied. "Lavender really isn't used to being around people on the full moon. I've been only thinking about the positive sides of her condition, her strength, better senses, and so on. Never really understood that she hasn't accepted her wolf - at least that's what I've read some true werewolves call it."

"I don't think Lavender understands the way we Puffs stick together when somebody is hurting or in trouble, but at the same time, we didn't understand her wanting to be alone, since we usually don't do that."

He shrugged, "So things are sort of back on an even keel. At least we're talking and she's still up for flatmates with us, and is willing to let a friendship develop if it will."

"But the reason I came to find you was to find out how you were taking things, how you were doing."

She was glad to hear that things were getting back to normal at the flat, she would have hated if her presence had made things bad for Richard. "I don't think most people understand us Puffs, you know the fact that badgers are protective of their own."

Susan was relieved to hear that Lavender was still willing to let her move in. "Oh that's good to hear, I was hoping to move in, in March if that was ok with both of you."

Laying her head on Rich's shoulder, Susan sighed. "I'm doing ok, I was surprised and I don't think Lavender likes me much but flying with you was brilliant. I prefer to look at the silver lining than the cloud, or at least I am trying to."

Richard nodded, "Badgers don't bark, but they still have a heck of a bite, too."

"March is good for me, and will give us all a chance to get to know each other better, get more comfortable together, all that." He reached out to put an arm around Susan and hold her close.

"I think Lavender is territorial, maybe monogamous basically. I more or less grew up in France, and I've been around Swedish girls for a while; my attitudes are different. I don't think that she doesn't like you, as much as she's as unsure about all this as we are. I could see you were really tentative the other night..."

Richard chuckled, "I didn't know you liked fast brooms as much as I do. You know, I've got several of the new Bluebottle Factory Racer brooms, if you want one to play with. Flying with you was fun, the only high point of that night."

A lot of Death Eaters had learned in the war how hard badgers could bite and Susan was proud of the fact that she had a hidden strength. It was nice to have a move in date agreed on and she settled happily in his arms.

Hearing that Lavender was monogamous and territorial wasn't a big surprise considering the attack from Greyback. His assessment wasn't wrong.

"It seemed like a good idea when I left home, she had said that the full moon was bad I just wanted to make sure she was ok, but when I got there I felt like I was intruding."

Just thinking about the flight brought a giddy smile to her face. "Could I really? I've only got a nimbus and while back in the day it was speedy it wasn't anything like yours"

Richard gave Susan a wry smile, "Seemed like a good idea to me at the time, too. Who would have known; a wolf without a pack instinct... or a suppressed one, or something. I imagine we'll work it out over time. We were both intruding."

"Lady Morticia is a Class A broom. That's like one step below a professional racing broom. The Bluebottles I have are Class C, fast, but not the same. Still, they'll make your Nimbus look like an arthritic buzzard by comparison."

At leas they had both been wrong footed about it. Susan briefly wondered if anyone had eaten the mousse she brought.

"I hope it works out or we just learn not to bother her during the full moon I guess."

Susan was impressed. " You named your broom?" She wasn't sure if that was funny or not but the Bluebottles sounded very cool as well.

"My poor nimbus is old but she gets me away when I need to, but the speed of a Bluebottle is hard to beat."

"We'll see what happens," Richard nodded, "all three of us as we work this thing out."

He hugged Susan, "Which only leaves working out the two of us, and how we fit together with Lavender. You haven't really said how you feel, but I'm guessing you're interested, or you wouldn't be moving in. Then, there's Hannah. I'd never want to hurt her feelings."

"I always try to name the things that have tried to kill me," Richard replied with a laugh. The Lady's a bit of a bodge, but will do better than 200, and you've seen how she'll handle even riding two-up."

"Bluebottle has made their family model brooms for so many years, the Factory Racer is a major step for them. That's why they've got me and a few others showing off early production models all over. The Class C's are as solid as their old brooms, but more powerful and maneuverable than anything they've ever made before... and I'm babbling like a broom enthusiast, aren't I?"

She nodded and hoped that he would be right. Her thoughts came full circle as Richard gave her the perfect opening to tell him how she felt about him “Richard, I care a lot about you, probably more than I should. Falling in love with you could, would be so easy, it’s just all very new to me.’ Susan confessed.

In addition, there was Hannah; she wasn’t sure how her best friend would take her moving in with Richard, it felt a little bit like a betrayal. “We just have to take great care not to leave her out of things, yeah?”

It was an interesting concept naming that which tried to kill you, she had never had much near death experiences due to a broom before though either.. As Richard talked, it was clear how much he loved flying. “Count me in on trying out a Class C, I used to want to race but it wasn’t a proper thing for a witch to do. I’ve been into brooms since before I could read, Peter would read the magazines to me and sneak me out on flights.”

"I'm..." Richard sighed, "I think I'm falling for you to, Susan, which is damned complicated, because I've fallen for Lavender, too. I can't sit here and tell you otherwise."

"And you're right about Hannah, she's so sweet, and worse luck, I think I could easily fall for her, too. She's just too focused on the Leaky right now to think about moving in on a permanent basis. I think that's why she's sort of kept her distance lately."

"I can get you up on the track where I train and shake out new broom spells, if you like," he told Susan with a smile. "And once you learn how to handle a racing broom, I can show you how to remove the restriction charms, and you'll have a strong Class B broom, close to a Class A."

It was a relief to hear her feelings were returned but different that he shared those same feelings with Lavender. “What does that mean? Do you have to pick between us?”

Susan felt his assessment of Hannah was probably spot on and she knew her friend enough to suspect that Hannah might be trying to protect her heart from what was truly growing into a complicated situation. “Maybe Hannah, will come round but it’s important that she know we care for her.”

The idea of going to a broom-racing track made Susan feel giddy and that was just silly but she couldn’t help but giggle with excitement. “Really? That would be fantastic!”

"Well..." Richard gathered his thoughts for a few moments. "I don't know as I have to choose, if the two of you, or for that matter the three of you, can come to an agreement of some sorts. I'm hoping we can work it out. Same would only be fair for the three of you, too. I'm not going to say there couldn't be another man in your life, any of your lives, even in the house, if we could all get along together in a civilized fashion, however many of us end up in the place."

"As to Hannah, I don't want to scare her off, and I don't want to seem so clingy she gets nervous, but I don't want her to feel neglected, either. I might let you talk to her, since you two have been close a lot longer than I have, and see if she's decided anything."

Richard grinned, Another broom enthusiast, "I've got the run of the track when there aren't race quals or an actual race going on so I can test charms and the like. Easy enough to get you on for a few laps any time you want. Let me check my schedule and make sure I'm not popping off half way around the world and we'll see if we can make a date, and who else wants to come."

Susan nodded, hopefully it would all work out, but who really knew right? Right now she couldn’t imagine being with anyone but him, but life wasn’t set in stone either.

“I’ll talk to Hannah and see what page she’s on. If nothing else she’ll always be a good friend.”

The idea of being able to race even just on an empty track was terribly exciting to her. Letting out a little squeal, she gave Rich a tight hug. “That would be perfect, we can take a picnic out there and just enjoy a nice day.”

"Good friend," Richard laughed, "or even better, friends with benefits." He hugged Susan one-armed. "You're a sexy little Puff all by yourself, you know? The two of you together was extremely hot."

"We'll wait until you've done a few laps at speed before we do much eating." Richard grinned at Susan, "Even experienced riders have been known to get a little queasy with the speed and sharp turns on a closed course, especially a tight-turned short course."

Susan blushed but agreed that her experiences with Hannah had been very hot. "If we're lucky then it will all work out."

Just the idea of being able go flying at high speeds. "Oh all right the stuffing of my face will wait until I've made some break neck turns, still sounds like so much fun!"

Richard nodded, laughing softly when Susan blushed. "Luck's been good so far. We just need to keep trying and hope for the best. After all, its not like what we did together was anything other than fantastic."

"It is fun," he agreed. "I pretty much forgot about quidditch playing when I started racing brooms. Everybody may be going the same direction all at once, but the speeds are a lot higher, and there's nothing like a long, cross-country race for excitement."
