RP: Have you seen this?
When: January 26, 2004
Who: Fleur Weasley, Gabrielle Delacour
Where: Shell Cottage
Private/Public: Private (unless Bill's around)
Rating: All ages for now.
Summary: Fleur's seen the paper and wants to talk to Gabi about it.

Fleur was ready to toss the paper out the window. The disappearances were one thing, but now they were attacking her sister. And she wasn't happy about it. She had to make sure Gabi knew about it before things started to get out of hand.

She tucked the paper under her arm and went up to Gabi's room. She knocked softly on the door, glad that she had been able to talk Victoire into a nap after breakfast.

"Gabi?" she called through the door.

Being sick did horrible things for your complexion, and Gabrielle felt pale - well not attractively pale - and lifeless as she looked in the mirror. With a huff, she sat down, pouting while swearing softly over the cold that even pepper-up potion had not made go away for nearly a week. The cold that now had her unattractively pale rather than her own glowing self.

She pouted. At least it was better than yesterday, she then decided just as she heard the knock on the door.

Turning around, she pulled her bathrobe around her. 'Come in,' she called out, waiting for her sister to enter the room.

Fleur opened the door once she heard her sister's reply.

"'ow are you feeling today?" Fleur asked, leaving the paper tucked under her arm. "You look much better. I know you are tired of the soup Molly told me to bring you. Do you think you will feel like something else today?"

Pulling her legs up on the chair as Fleur entered, Gabrielle tilted her head as she watched her sister. She was worried about something, she could tell, but she had a feeling it wasn't her health. She hadn't coughed all day, or most of yesterday even.

'You know I will,' she said, trying to figure out why Fleur was worried. 'I have been better for days and I'm bored out of my mind by just staying in here. I want to do something.'

She lit up. 'Perhaps I can take Victoire down to the beach?' she suggested. 'Or perhaps the playground?' Anything would be better than sitting cooped up in this room all day.

That's when she noticed the paper under Fleur's arm. 'What is that?' she asked curiously, though even as she asked, she felt herself shudder. Last time anyone had brought her the prophet to read it had led to a lot of trouble. Did Harry have a new girlfriend? Had he decided she wasn't the one she wanted? Was that what was worrying Fleur?

"I think Victoire would like that," she replied. "She 'as really been enjoying the books I bought 'er. Perhaps we can all take a trip to 'ogsmeade soon if you would like."

Fleur bit her bottom lip. Gabi knew her just as well as Bill did - and she knew she was worried about something. She couldn't hide it anymore.

"It is today's Prophet," she said, untucking the paper and handing it to her sister. "I thought you would like to read it before the Howlers and Owls start pouring in."

Frowning at her sister's words, Gabi took the paper as her sister handed it to her. 'Why would there be-'

Her voice trailed off when she saw the headline, her face paling at the sight. 'But ho-' A deep groan left her as she found the article, reading word after word of lies mixed in with the truth. By the time she was finished her hands were trembling, in fact her entire body was shaking even as she tried to wrap her head around the contents.

In her mind long since faded hazy memories battled for room. A bottle of alcohol in the hands of Jacques. His and his best friends hands on her as she drank. The dizzy and glorious bliss of not knowing what was going on. The cold harshness of discovery followed by the shame as she saw her father's disappointed gaze. She closed her eyes, not able to speak, not able to think or move past the one terrifying thought in her head.

Harry would hate her.

The mere thought made her want to hyperventilate and a long pained noise left her throat even as a tap on the window made her jump. One owl, more behind it, all carrying red shaking letters. Howlers. She looked at her sister in sheer panic, tears streaming down her face. 'Why?'

Fleur had expected the Howlers after she'd read the article and she only hoped she could banish them quickly enough so she could console her sister.

She pulled her wand out, as she took the Howlers from the owls and sent them back out the window. She banished them as quickly as she could, hoping that would do the trick.

"I do not know why, Gabrielle," she said, leaving the window cracked for other owls as they came. "But you must tell me what really 'appened so we can figure out 'ow to deal with this. You 'ave never spoken of your time at Beauxbatons to me, but I think now you 'ave no choice. We can fix this or at least try to."

'NON!'

The answer came so quickly that Gabrielle didn't even notice when she fell back to French. What followed was a rambling mixure of French and English as she got up and restlessly paced the floor feeling the panic rise within her. Half of what she said barely making sense but in essence bottled down to that very word: 'Non!'

'I don't want to speak about it. I won't. It's not their business. It's not anyone's business and they're lying!!!

Her upset speach was interrupted by an owl that had slipped through the cracks, a howler exploding in the room with a loud crack as the shrill voice of some middleaged woman started to fill the air and words like slut and tart and golddigger and 'who did she think she was, using Harry like that?'

Groaning in sudden pain she threw herself on the bed, burying her face in the pillow as she started sobbing hysterically.

"Gabrielle," Fleur said, her voice in the stern tone that she had to use when she was trying to get Victoire to stop doing something. "Please. You have to tell me what 'appened or we will never get this sorted. You 'ave to know that."

Two more Howlers made their way in and Fleur managed to banish them before they exploded and started screaming profanities that would surely wake Victoire from her nap. She cast a silencing spell, hoping it would be enough to keep the screams from the Howlers confined to the room.

She could barely hear her sister over her own hysteric sobs. Harry hated her now, she was sure of it, how could he not? And she'd never be able to step outside the house and her life was over because of that fucking bitch of a woman.

Somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear what Fleur was saying but she couldn't speak, couldn't bring herself to tell. Instead she just sobbed harder, crying as if her heart was being ripped from her chest as she shook her head.

'I can't!'

"Gabi, please," Fleur said in French as she sat down on her sister's bed and pulled her head into her lap. "I know this is horrible and that you think your life is over, but we have to talk about it. I want to help."

For the longest time she couldn't stop crying long enough to form a sentence. Clinging to her sister, Gabrielle's entire body racked with the sobs and tears as she shook her head violently from side to side.

'I can't. I can't.'

Raising her head far enough to look at her sister, shame burning on her face. 'I can't, Fleur,' she said again. 'I don't remember, Fleur. I just - I don't remember, but it- I- I never wanted Jacques. Never.'

Fleur brushed Gabi's hair from her face and accio'd a box of tissues to the bed before three more Howlers made it in the window. She banished them and handed her sister a tissue.

"You were only thirteen," Fleur whispered. "So young..."

'What does that matter?' Gabi sobbed. 'Everyone will think-' her voice broke into sobs once more as she buried her face in Fleur's lap. 'Harry will hate me,' he sobbed harder, curling up on herself as she lost her ability to speak.

"It matters because it upsets you," Fleur continued in French. She wanted to comfort her sister and she knew speaking in French would be one way of doing it. "And because it is not the truth. The people who are sending these Howlers do not know you. They do not care about you or your feelings. But your family and friends do. I am sure Harry knows better than to believe the lies in the Prophet. That rag is known for spreading discord through the wizarding world. You must not worry. Things will get back to normal and all of this will not matter."

Fleur continued to brush Gabi's hair with her fingers, wiping away her tears with one hand as she tried to banish the Howlers that were still coming through the open window. She only hoped they would stop coming at some point. That people would tire of being rude and uncouth to someone they didn't even know.

The sound of her sister's voice was calming, if not calming enough. Inside she felt like her heart was breaking, and even though her sister told her Harry wouldn't believe it, she didn't dare to believe that to be true.

With every sob, with every banished or exploding howler, Gabrielle felt worse and worse until it was impossible to say a word and impossible not to keep crying. Holding tightly onto her sister she silently damned her past, the papers, the world at large as she promised herself never to step outside her room again.

Fleur sighed softly. She knew the best thing to do was let her tire herself out. She hummed softly, singing every now and then in French as she brushed her sister's hair.

She kept banishing the Howlers as they came through the window. And she was surprised to see owls from people who really cared - Alicia and Molly. Hopefully their letters of encouragement would help Gabi come around again.
