After six months together, Carolina was fairly resigned to the fact that Li would occasionally end up in the hospital with serious injuries. It was a hazard of his class, and his temperament: Fell Knight abilities damaged the health of their user, and Li lacked Carolina's finely-honed instinct of self-preservation. Divina took after her mentor in this respect. Carolina supposed she ought to try to rub off on the girl, but she suspected that fighters in general must have something of a death wish to willingly put themselves behind a sword in the first place.
On her way to the hospital the next day, she'd taken a detour to a food stand that served noodles like the ones eaten in Li's home region in Kerwon. If food wasn't the fastest way to Li's heart, it certainly got you in the door, and Carolina knew the food in clinics left much to be desired. She ordered a serving of noodles with beef—although Carolina was a vegetarian, she wasn't looking to change Li's habits, and he could probably use the iron after all the blood he'd lost the day before. After a moment of thought, she placed a second order for the same thing, for Divina.
She and Divina hadn't always gotten along. Divina was suspicious of Carolina at first. It took a few months for Carolina to realize, to her own amusement, that the girl was fiercely protective of Li, and to act accordingly. They were on good terms now. Carolina rather liked the young Fell Knight, and Divina acted as warmly toward Carolina as she did toward anyone else. She probably wouldn't be visiting her in the hospital if she wasn't already going for Li, but she was looking forward to the chance to get to know the girl a bit better.
When she arrived, she was directed to Li's room immediately. Li was asleep—Carolina was fairly immune to what most people considered adorable, but she had been so far unable to resist those feelings when Li was asleep—so Carolina turned her attention to the other bed.
"Hello," she said.
