DAY ONE. The first part of their mission had the group traveling by airship through the vast and clear skies above Ivalice. Departing at five a.m., they had reached their destination by mid-afternoon, dropping down at a large clearing in the wilderness at the edges of southern Valendia. Up ahead, the group could see a vast and untamed wilderness set out before them, as a forest of trees stretched in all directions. Mist hung in heavy patches, hinting of the unknown dangers waiting beyond. Aside from those who had volunteered to travel along, a small group of archeologists and diverse men of science - a committee representing the Ivalician Historical Society, had come along as well. It was this group that had hired the mercenary company to begin with in fact, as they could not afford the inherent dangers of traveling alone. A studious lot, they all however seemed experienced with expeditions through the wilderness, and had chatted along pleasantly with those who had chosen to escort them. Regulars of the Black Lion company, Gillian Goodwin and those she had picked to escort and survey the group of volunteers, had quickly divvied up their equipment and handed out the maps indicating their destination. Planning to travel on foot for the rest of the day, and make camp at a unseen waypoint miles ahead, the mercenaries formed a scouting party and began the expedition. Meanwhile, the volunteers were left to follow their course and defend themselves and the scientists, not only from the rugged terrain, but also the wild monsters thriving in the woodlands. There were not pathways through the forest to guide the group, only their maps and compasses, and their way had often been blocked by mighty felled trees, heavy brush and vines, sudden plummets in the earth and enormous boulders. Climbing and carving their way forward, the group was not given an easy time of things, but then, that was why they were all being paid a handsome sum of gil. As dusk approached, the group made camp near the bank of a narrow river, setting up tents and fires and tending to the wounded. While the travel had been vigorous, they were only halfway to their destination point. The Black Lions took turns keeping guard around the camp as everyone was allowed a brief chance to rest. DAY TWO. Once the sun rose over the horizon and the camp area had been cleared up, Gillian had informed them that, by the scouting party's examinations, they likely would hit their destination by early afternoon. They set out early and wasted no time traveling through the forest once again. It was by the hour of noon they had reached their destination at last. The monastery was centuries old and had been abandoned for countless years. It had been built by hand by a devoted group of Pharist monks, and what remained was still a sight to behold. While the roof had caved long ago, and some of the rooms had crumbled, the main chapel was mostly intact, and so too was the brilliant stained-glass window that had once shown brilliant lights down on the pews. There was evidence of a stable, a small farm, a cemetery with broken headstones and other evidence of the monk’s daily life here. But while the scientists got to work setting up camp, the Black Lions set about creating a secure perimeter about the area. The volunteers, meanwhile, were brought around to their task as well. Once the scientists had found the door to the intact cellar, they indicated what they believed remained down below. A warding sigil had been placed on a hidden stone door, and while they went to work unlocking the curious magic sealing what was beyond, the group prepared themselves for the untold dangers lurking in the ruins. In an hour, they had found themselves climbing down by rope to the first room of the Kiltian ruins, and from there the adventure had begun. DAY THREE. After their harrowing adventure the day before, the group was given the evening to rest and recuperate. The scientists and mercenaries had worked ceaselessly above ground to set up a fortified camp, and tents had been put up to deal with the tired and the wounded. Dinner was made by evening over a fire, and everyone was offered a heaping bowl of fresh stew and a cup of ale for their efforts. Regardless of the dangers they had faced, not only to their destination but also below ground, the scientists and mercenaries were in high spirits, and had started up games of cards and dice to relieve the tension and pass the time. Gillian gave instruction, that while her regulars would stay behind to guard the scientists, the rest of the volunteers and those eager to return to the city would find themselves with an easier way back to the airship. The Black Lions’ scouting parties had found persons from a traveling village of nomads close by, and with the chocobos they had borrowed from the villagers, they would move quickly the next day to the pick-up point. By early morning, the group was hauled onto chocobos and carts and sent off through the forest once again. In a matter of several hours, they had reached a different clearing in the woods, this one fully inhabited by humes and their bustling caravan. This group they found was comprised of travelers and vagabonds of all sorts, and while the group waited for the airship to arrive, they were left to inspect the foods and wares at sale to them by the nomads. Food and drink was offered, wines and liquors from all parts of Ivalice, as well as clothing and crafts made to sell as the nomads traveled along. Women were anxious to sell jewelry and other fine goods, while the men sought to repair damaged weapons and armor and restock supplies of potions. They were a friendly and motley village, and had wished the group well as they departed by airship back to Emillion. |
