The silence that had first reigned in the cavern on their arrival had not been a sign of absence. It had been a sign of sleep—and whatever nasty surprises the cave had in store were already waking up, ready to welcome the exploring party.
"I'll take the front and hold their attention," Mag said.
The ceiling was lower where they had come in, creating a natural chokepoint that let the group bottleneck their enemies. A lone redmaw broke off and attempted to get past the fighters to Ophion, and saw its entrepreneurial action impeded by the point of Mag's spear.
They advanced slowly, carefully, clearing their way through the monsters. In the gaps between batting wings, they caught glimpses of what lay ahead: stone idols, shadows, the bones of a religion.
