Fleur had done everything in her power to make Shell Cottage a comfortable and cheerful place this Christmas. It was the very least she could do to ensure the family she had married into had a calm if not pleasant holiday. What they needed, she felt, was someone to look after them while they gathered in their grief. She could do that.
The house was cleaner than it had ever been and strung with decorations. Nothing too overt or flashy, but candles and greenery to reflect the festive season. A tree sat in the corner of the sitting room, lit by candles and frosted with icicles and jeweled garlands. She had collected the gifts from The Burrow that had not been picked up by their recipients and placed them under the tree.
Fleur had retired to the kitchen to finish the food. There were a number of dishes from her own upbringing, oysters, crepes, and foie gras among them, as well as more traditional English fare. Wine was the strongest drink in the house, and with good reason.
She peered out the window at the sea crashing against the rocks and wished that Christmas would go smoothly. Yes, the family that would gather here would be short three members, and this fact would weigh heavily on all present, but Fleur hoped those that remained could remember the fallen with a smile and cherish each other on this day.
