It was silly, really, this game that Stephen had been playing. It was obvious to anyone who had been paying attention that Stephen worshiped the very ground that Loki walked upon. Obvious to everyone except Stephen himself, that is. Heaven forbid anyone call him out on it. He'd double down and insist that things were platonic between them.
Then why, exactly, had he dropped everything amidst an attack from a sea god to install a door for Loki? Why did he lean in just a little too close when he spoke to them? Why did everything else cease to matter whenever Loki was in the room?
Excellent questions that Stephen would never answer. He was slowly letting his guard down, though, because he couldn't keep that act up forever. Certainly not here, between just the two of them. As they walked, Stephen's knuckles occasionally brushed Loki's. It might have been unintentional the first time. But after the second, and the third, Stephen's touch seemed to linger just a little bit longer, his fingers not so subtly smoothing down Loki's thumb.
Stephen had been so preoccupied with how electric it felt, that brief but meaningful contact, that he hadn't really been paying attention to what was going on around them. They were no longer alone. And while the vampire stalking them had indeed been stealthy, he should have detected it getting closer. Something passed over them, like a cloud eclipsing the moon - the only warning they'd receive before the vampire had descended upon Stephen's back, ruining the mood.
Yeah. Stephen was annoyed that their lovely stroll had been interrupted. He was even more annoyed that no matter how much he struggled, the stupid vampire refused to let go. He reached behind him to yank the damn thing off his back, only for those razor-sharp teeth to catch the heel of his hand, blood now trickling down his wrist. "Shit!"
