It had been a normal morning so far. Miguel had woken up beside Ruby when Lyla announced it was his alarm time, and had a quick shower before getting dressed and gathering up his work things. Breakfast was eaten quickly while he made coffee, and after he'd drank some and filled his travel mug, he gave Ruby a kiss goodbye and then left to walk to the school. Amazingly normal and domestic and he really kind of liked it a whole lot.
He talked to Lyla as he walked, planning out things he needed to do during the day that weren't covered by his lesson plans, and then he stopped dead in his tracks.
Where the shock was he? Where was he going?
"Lyla?"
"Yes, Miguel?" she answered, although as usual, she didn't manifest anywhere that wasn't a Mistake place.
"Where... uhm," he started, looking all round as he tried to find the words he wanted. He didn't find them.
"Please provide more context, Miguel. 'Where?' is a very vague question, a-"
"Right, right, I get it, shush. Where am I?" He did quite well in hiding the little thread of worry as he asked his question, but then Lyla didn't answer him. "...shocking hell. You can un-shush."
"Thank you! You're in Dunwich, Massachusetts," she replied, before giving him the street name as if that was any shocking use to him whatsoever.
"Okay... why?"
"You are walking to work, Miguel. At the High School. Where you teach biology. Your readings indicate to me that you ar-"
"I'm teaching?!" he interrupted, confusion now well and truly kicking in. "Since when?"
"Since the start of this school year, over eight months ago."
"What the actual shock?"
"Calm down, please. Miguel, pay attention to me, and answer my questions," Lyla said, her tone becoming less playful and much more serious as she spoke. "What did you do this morning?"
"I... got ready for work and left my apartment?"
"Do you remember this, or are you guessing based on context?"
"Bit of both. There was a woman... Red, lots of red... Ruby! Ruby was there."
"Yes. What do you remember about Ruby?" Was it worrying that Lyla looked concerned as she spoke? Should he be concerned? Shocking hell...
"Everything. She's staying over because she wants to redecorate. She works at Tower Pizza. Her smile is amazing and I love her."
"Very good. What do you remember about Dunwich High School?"
