CARTER & ROBBIE

since Kelly wasn't here, he knew he needed to do his best to make sure that Robbie was sorted out

Robbie was here. Robbie was here and he didn't remember and he didn't trust Carter and Kelly wasn't here and Carter didn't know why. He would have given anything to have his brother here, too, but since Kelly wasn't here, he knew he needed to do his best to make sure that Robbie was sorted out and settled in. Especially when Mark didn't know him and Gordo..well, Carter didn't know how much Gordo knew sometimes, just that he was from earlier than Carter was. And earlier than this Robbie, he supposed.

Carter still wasn't at a hundred percent, but he was moving better. There was a bald patch just under where his hair flipped over and he was debating shaving it all to let everything grow out, but it had been kind of nice, having it long again. But maybe that was something to do soon. It didn't take him long to get over to Pickman, parking in one of the spots on the street before making his way up the steps, a coffee and bag from home in hand.

Robbie might not remember him very well, but Carter remembered Robbie. And he remembered some of the foods and things he liked. If nothing else, coffee and some lunch might be a way to break the ice. Maybe. He hoped.

Finding room 157, he knocked, then stepped back as he waited.

This was all very exhausting. Every moment of every day for the last month has been exhausting. Losing time. Losing memories. People who kept telling him we know you we love you because you are pack pack pack and he didn't remember any of it. He knew nothing. He felt lost like he'd never find his way. Now he was here, even more lost than before. No Michelle Hughes. No Ezra. Robert, whatever his name was. No Kelly. No grass and lake water and sunshine.

He laid back on the bed he'd been assigned at Pickman, eyes closed, in the little room he supposed he was going to call his own while he was here. It was... marginally better than the basement dungeon room with the silver barrier he'd been in the last few days. Except he was loose here. He could go anywhere. He could you're hurting me Robbie please please please. Robbie sat up, inhaling deeply before exhaling slowly.

Carter. He could smell him in that breath, and he got up off the bed and made his way to the door, opening it only seconds after the knock. "Hey Carter." No point in inviting him in, Robbie had nothing in there yet. "Where we going?"

"Hey, Robbie." He smelled Robbie, of course, but there was just a hint of Kelly and mom and Ox and Joe and- home. Carter wanted to reach out and hug him, to inhale that scent, but he resisted the urge. For now. He didn't want to overwhelm him anymore than he already was.

"To my truck, first." Carter held out the paper bag and the steel tumbler in offering. "I brought you coffee and a sandwich to start. Truck can wait if you want to eat it here?"

He did, he smelled like all of them, still. He hadn't even showered since arriving, and hadn't changed his clothes - he didn't have anything to change into, anyway. Strangers clothes that smelled weird. Not his. And... it was the last bits of grass and lake water and sunshine that he had. He didn't want to lose it.

"Oh, right, yeah that - that's." He exhaled because it was nice and it was weird and Robbie had a lot of conflicting emotions about all this. "Come on in." He pulled the door open for Carter, walking over to the little table with the little chairs and he sat, looking more broken than he had even before. "Thanks, man."

"You're welcome. But you don't have to thank me- I figured food isn't usually a bad idea. And my boyfriend made the sandwich- the food truck's not really doing much this time of year." Carter could tell that something was off, and while their bond was a little..weird at the moment, he still wanted to try. He stepped inside, watching Robbie's face as he sank into a chair- he was clearly distraught and not handling this as well as Carter might have guessed from their conversation on the network.

"I know that this is a lot. But you're gonna be alright, okay? I promise."

"You have a boyfriend here... who owns a food truck?" Shit, they really were just settling down into life here, weren't they? Robbie could hardly imagine it. He thought he'd settled down into Caswell fine enough, he'd been there over a year and he'd never been - well, in his memory, he'd never had a home longer than that before, not since he was really little.

Of course, that's not what he was learning. Maybe he had had a home, before Caswell, with the Bennetts. It was hard to know. He felt it, sometimes, but it was different.

"It is a lot, man. It was a lot two days ago when all I was fighting with was you all, trying to remember, trying to figure out what's real. Now I'm here in this place. I thought I was losing it."

"A boyfriend, a job, an entire house- yeah. I've been here a while." Jesus. Was it just about six months already? He had to think about it for a moment. "Seriously, though. It's not so bad, really. The pack here is pretty great. A lot more women than we're used to in Green Creek."

He nodded. "I get it. Just one step at a time, you know? I was thinking I'd make sure you know how to get to MIST, then I was gonna take you over to the clothing store and grocery store, see what we can find for you- that you pick- and try to make it easier for you. And if there's anything else you want or need. And when you're ready, you can meet the others in the pack."

"That's so weird, considering I just saw you two days ago." He didn't totally understand all the finer details of this place and what that meant for back home, but he was starting to. If Carter had been here a while, Gordo and Mark too, but he had just seen them all and from later than they remember... they couldn't be missing from home, too. Not that that made him feel better.

Robbie took the sandwich, realizing he actually was really hungry. He hadn't eaten in a while, he wasn't even sure how long, and bit into it as Carter explained the little things that would help him settle in. At the idea of meeting this new pack, Robbie hesitated, looking up with slight panic at Carter before letting it subside, getting himself back under control.

Finishing his bite, he nodded. "Yeah, thats a good plan." He tried to make it sound convincing, but it wasn't very. Robbie looked away, covering his face with his hand for a minute, trying to keep it together. He wasn't usually a weepy type, but this was a lot.

"Yeah, it's-time here is different. Like- it runs normal, I think. But it brings people here from different times. And different worlds? There are witches and werewolves, and people with other powers and stuff. It's kind of incredible." He knew it was a lot, and even if their bond wasn't normal, he couldn't miss the panic on Robbie's face.

"There isn't a rush. It's just you and me today, alright? You can come to my house if you want- meet Luke, get used to some of the scents if you want, but you don't have to. I'm not gonna make you do anything you don't want to."

It had to, given that no one whose face he recognized from the last few days was the same face he remembered. Even Carter's was a little different, though definitely the closest too. Maybe this one was a little more settled than the last one he'd seen. He couldn't be sure.

This Carter was in a bit of contrast to last Carter - except, it hadn't really been Carter to try and rush him into things. It was everyone, together. Gordo with his father's magic, trying to undo what had been done to him. Ox trying to remind him, so hard, who his alpha was. He just didn't... remember any of it, an endless void that made it impossible to connect.

He wondered if he'd ever feel connected to a pack the way they said he had, the way he so desperately wanted to be. "It's really... really hard. I just - I just saw pictures, you know. Of me, I guess, with all of you. All over the wall at the shop and all these captured moments and memories of a life and family I don't remember having."

Carter nodded slowly. "I can't say that I know exactly what it's like for you," he admitted, voice quiet. "And I know it isn't any easier showing up here, where everything's different and you don't necessarily know anyone and the people you do know are almost strangers. But there's a community here. And you can find your place- and hey. Maybe here there's a little less pressure? No one's going to be comparing you to who you were before."

He sat back in his seat. "And there are other witches here, if you want any of them to try to see if there's anything they can do to help you remember? But there's no rush on any of that, either."

"I get a bit more time to... process, I guess." Finding the silver lining was rough. He took another bite of the sandwich, setting it down on what it had been wrapped in as he thought, as he listened to what Carter was saying and mulled it over in his head. "No one's really even going to know who I was before." Did anyone? Did anyone know who he was, before? Did Carter? Did Kelly? He wanted to remember, but...

What if he did? What if he did remember, here, and it all came back and his heart broke again because those people weren't here. He'd lost them again. How many times would he lose them? Space, time, memories, everything, he'd have to feel the loss so different. Not to mention, he'd have to remember who he was, too. He wasn't sure that was something he wanted.

"Maybe, yeah. I mean. If you think it'd help. Just, not yet. I haven't even wrapped my head around the last week let alone winding up in fuckin weirdo multi-dimensional space-time dumping ground land."

"There isn't a rush for anything," Carter replied. "All I want to do today is make sure that you have whatever food and clothes and necessities you need. And I'll try to answer whatever questions I can for you. If I don't know it, I'll do my best to get you to someone who can."

He nodded. "Yeah, no. Take all the time you want to figure out what's going on. What- what's going on for you back home?"

"Okay, yeah." He nodded, feeling a little more settled about it. No rush, right? Picking up the sandwich again, he took another bite looking perhaps a little bit guilty at the next question. What was going on. What had gone on was Robbie had lost his damn shit, hurt Kelly, and was taken back to the Bennet house anyway.

He swallowed the bite, thinking. "Do you remember when I tried to run? After... after Gordo and Ox tried to get my memory back? And I ended up at the shop and I tore all the pictures down and..." Hurt Kelly he left, unsaid.

"I..shit. Yeah. Okay." Carter remembered that, but even that had been a month or so before he'd ended up here. "I don't know if it makes it better or worse for you that Kelly isn't here. It's been a struggle for me, since he's my tether. But I'm- I'm managing. Pack helps, and Luke. Friends. That kind of thing."

That didn't mean it was always easy. "All of that was a little while before I got here. Maybe a month? I don't know exactly."

Kelly, and his oceans of blue and the expectation that he was supposed to love him, they were mated, and he didn't remember any of it. That even without remembering any of it, he was helpless, he'd follow Kelly anywhere. "Both." He admitted it because it was true. It was easier without Kelly here, but it felt so much worse.

"So you know everything I do, and maybe a little more." He wondered if anything had really happened in that month, but maybe he didn't want to know. Or maybe he didn't want to know yet. "This is fucked, Carter. Really fucked."

"Yeah. I get that." Carter worried his lower lip, sitting back in his seat. "I know I'm not him, but I'll do what I can to help you in his absence. And- maybe someday he'll show up? There's no way to know for sure, though."

He nodded, slowly. "Yeah. It is. But it isn't all bad. Once you get used to being here, the other people like us- ones who showed up through the MIST? A lot of 'em are pretty great."

The idea of Kelly showing up here sent Robbie into a lot of mental spirals and he bit his cheek, biting down until it drew blood. After a moment, the blood was gone and the bite was healed and he finished off half of his sandwich, wrapping the other half up.

"I've always been a loner, you know. I don't know if I'll... fit here." He hadn't anywhere, not that he could remember. Even at Caswell, he didn't really fit. "Why don't we get groceries and then we can just, do what you said. Maybe go to your place. I don't know. I just need to be moving, I think."

Carter could smell it when Robbie drew blood, and he sat up a little, stopping himself from reaching out.

"I know you haven't had a pack in a long time. But one nice thing about this place is that everyone here is trying to find their place. You'll find it." He nodded. "Yeah, of course. Groceries and clothes. You'll feel better with some clothes that you pick out."

"Yeah? I guess that makes sense." If people were being pulled from different worlds, different timelines, it was a lot of adjustment for anyone. He was just one of many who would be trying to find their place here in Dunwich. Without thinking, he reached out to pat Carter's knee, briefly, before standing.

"I might feel better with some more clothes to my name, yeah. A nice sweater. Cool beanie, maybe."

"You'll find a place here," Carter reassured him, smiling faintly as Robbie pat his knee. "I hope it's with the pack, but even if it isn't with the rest of them, you'll always have a place with me."

He pushed himself up to his feet, resisting the urge to ask for a hug just at the moment. Carter motioned for Robbie to take his coffee with him, then started toward the door, making his way out toward the lobby, explaining a little bit about Pickman and making sure Robbie knew where the portal to MIST was- he figured that would be helpful- before heading out to his truck.

"I'd warn you about the weather here, except if you've been in Maine, you're probably way more used to this than I am. Except things can get weird- we had this real thick neverending fog last month. And complete darkness a couple months before- no sunlight."

"That's what everyone keeps telling me." He said with a sigh, but he nodded all the same and tried on a smile for reassurance. It worked well enough. Still, with Carter's reassurance that even if it wasn't with the whole pack, he had Carter... that felt good.

Especially since, well, Carter actually knew what was going on with him. He knew what had happened. He knew where Robbie's head was at. He knew about Kelly. All of it. If there was anyone he could go to for answers, for reassurances, for help, it was Carter.

Gordo and Mark, they'd help of course, but Robbie didn't know them and they didn't know him, or this version of him. Gordo knew a different Robbie. Mark didn't know him at all. Carter, though. It was different, and it was reassuring. "Yeah. Thanks, Carter."

He remembered those first few days, Carter's jokes - one of the only ones to treat him relatively normally, without much in the way of hostility or sadness. "Not too worried about the weather but an entire month of darkness sounds fuckin terrible, man." He followed Carter to his truck, making note of the portal (a fucking PORTAL which he would probably geek out over in a week or two when he was more settled) and other things of importance along the way.

"It was pretty rough," Carter admitted. They made it to the truck and he unlocked it, climbing in. He was thinking clothes first, then groceries, since he didn't want any food to go off while they were doing other things. "There's been a lot here that's rough. Monsters. Fights. Mark turned alpha here, and none of us knew what was going on. And even- all that's weird. Mark's got Gordo, but he's also got a boyfriend? Gordo's- well, he's Gordo."

Carter pointed out a few landmarks- he knew Robbie was probably too overwhelmed just now to really remember how to get from place to place, but he figured he'd point out a couple of useful spots just in case. It didn't take but a few minutes to find parking near the clothing store, and he made sure he had his wallet and keys in his pocket. "There's a cat in here that talks. Used to own the place, but now it belongs to one of the girls from another place. Another time, I think? Luke's friends with her. But in case you hear a voice- you aren't going crazy."

"Whoa hoooo buddy slow down." He turned in the seat to look at Carter, expression one of absolute dumbfoundedness. "Monsters. On top of weeks of darkness and fucked up fog." Robbie leaned back against the seat, his head far enough that he was staring at the truck's ceiling. He let out a groan.

Which he kept up until they were parked, basically. He got out of the truck still grumbling a little under his breath, once again biting the inside of his mouth when Carter tried to reassure him that hearing voices didn't mean he was going crazy in the store, which only made Robbie laugh, a little bitterly. "Tell that to -" He started to say, and then stopped.

No one needed to know that.

"Right, talking cat. Because why not." He walked into the store behind Robbie, taking just an extra second at the door to prepare himself before walking in.

"To say the least? There's gotta be a list somewhere, or I bet you could look back on the network. Sometimes it feels like I can't keep up with everything." Carter glanced over as Robbie leaned back, keeping quiet for the last little bit of the drive.

"Hey, Jimmy's pretty cool. You might like him." Carter pushed the door open, giving Alison a small wave before taking a moment to see where things seemed to be. It..wasn't Tuesday, so they should be okay for going upstairs, too, and the curtain in front of the staircase was pulled open for visitors. "Everything seems to change places in here, but you can usually find a bunch of things you'll like."

Talking cats. Carter was settling in nicely, but they'd all been here for a long time already. Did they just settle easier than him? Was it not this crazy for them when they'd first arrived? Monsters and months of darkness and fog and talking cats with stores that had things always changing places.

Maybe if Robbie had his memories, and was more settled in himself as a person, it might not be so much. As it was, it was a lot. Almost too much. He quieted then and followed Carter around the shop, clearly lost in his head. It wasn't that he hadn't heard anything Carter said, it's just that... he couldn't wrap his mind around it. He didn't know what to say.

Normally, when he got this trapped, a little voice would call to him will you hear me, dear? and he'd come back to himself. Or what he thought was himself. That wasn't here, though, and Robbie stared at a rack of women's clothes, lost.

Carter could sense a bit of Robbie's..confusion and after a moment he trailed off, turning to look back at his friend. Brother? If Robbie wanted that. He didn't want to assume, but as he was Kelly's mate, Carter already thought of him as family.

"Robbie?" He turned back to him, reaching a hand out to gently touch his shoulder. "You okay?"

A soft hand on his shoulder, and a familiar scent. Not as familiar as it should be, but it was there - it didn't smell like home but it was supposed to. It was supposed to and Robbie placed his hand on top of Carter's on his shoulder and breathed in deep.

"Not yet." He said, turning to look at Carter. He felt defeated, and entirely dependent on people he had been so determined not to trust. "I'm sorry. I wish..." He trailed off. What did he wish? "I don't know. I'm just sorry."

Carter remained still as Robbie turned to him, trying to give him time. He watched his face, the myriad of emotions that played over Robbie's face in the few moments as he spoke.

"You don't have to be sorry," he insisted, pausing for a moment before tugging him close, wrapping his arms around him. Carter inhaled, breathing in that lingering scent of home and giving Robbie whatever time he needed before he pulled back. "Do you want- would you rather go somewhere else? I can just take you back to the house, do the rest of this later? Alison could probably pick out some stuff for you if you wanted."

He almost pulled away, the idea of a hug was a lot and he wasn't used to so much touching. Not all wolves were like that, as touchy as the Bennett's were. He didn't remember what it was like, but it felt good and he didn't resist, he put his arms around Carter and hugged him close, hugged him tight and breathed him in too, because it felt grounding. It was keeping him firmly on his two feet. He exhaled. Inhaled. Exhaled.

"No, I want to do this, I - we can stay." He said, still not letting go. He held on for another few moments before finally letting go. "Okay. These... are women's clothes, cute but I don't think I'll fit." He joked because it felt better than trying not to. "Where's the men's stuff?"

"Alright. I will." The Bennetts were supposed to be the enemy, but there they were and Carter understood, he knew and he felt like he fit somehow in a puzzle Robbie couldn't see the picture of. One little piece out of thousands that were scattered all over, but one little piece that slid into place and felt like yeah, that could be it. That could be right. It was all he had to hang on to.

Robbie nodded to Alison, giving her the best smile he could muster as he followed her motion and Carter's lead. "Sweater. Cool beanie. Jeans. Do they have beanies here?"

"Oh, yeah, that too." He didn't think about the basics in a little store like this, but yeah, he needed those too.

He looked over the selection, letting his hand run over the sweaters. He didn't really care all that much what it looked like, but it mattered how it felt. He liked to look nice, he liked to match, but for comfort - it had to be soft. His hands fell on a forest green sweater, soft to the touch and he tugged it from its place. "How am I supposed to pay for this?"

"You'll probably think of things later that you didn't think of today, and that's okay."

Carter fell quiet, letting Robbie take his time in looking over the sweaters, touching each to get a feel for the texture and the scent. "I've got you for today. But there's the money jar at Pickman at the front desk, or Alison here will often take barters- fold some laundry, help with stock, that kind of a thing? In exchange for a wardrobe. Most of us end up getting jobs around here. Mark owns the garage. I've got a gig over at the hardware store."

“Yeah, you’re right.” He probably would. He’d think of millions of things tomorrow that he couldn’t think of today and he’d forget them all over again because he was just not able to think straight for any length of time yet.

He was getting there, though. With Mark. With Gordo. With Carter. Each conversation he had was bringing him closer to a feeling of reality that he hadn’t been able to grip onto in a long time.

“Thanks, man.” He nodded, knowing he’d likely barter instead of borrow money. It felt weird to have nothing to his name at all. Even his cell phone wasn’t really his, not that he’d had much use for one living in Caswell, since he never left.

He grabbed a few more things, knowing his size well enough that he didn’t need to try them on. He sniffed them, glad for the soft clean scent of the store and nothing else on each piece. Just the fabric, maybe a little dust, and laundry. “We’re… we’re going to be good?” He asked, looking for reassurance.

"I'm not expecting us to remember everything today- I just want to make sure you've got the basics you need to get by to start." Carter could sense that Robbie was overwhelmed, and he tried to send as much reassurance as he could through what he could feel of their bond. It wasn't a clear and open bond, though- Carter figured it was probably the different times and Dunwich messing with that.

He shouldn't have been surprised.

"Yeah, of course." Carter didn't care to spend the money on Robbie- he was Pack, and everything ended up shared with pack anyways. They were family.

He paused at Robbie's next. "Yeah, dude. We're going to be good. Things don't have to be so bad here."

It would be hard, but if Mark and Gordo and Carter all said this place had positives about it - that it could be good here, that he could make a life here and belong? Well. Either Robbie had lost his mind entirely or they were telling the truth. Maybe it was both.

"We can always come back tomorrow, yeah." He agreed, thinking maybe he'd have to write a list of things he'd need over the next few days until he was set up. Days, man. Robbie huffed to himself, still struggling to believe he'd be here still, for who knows how long.

"Okay, man. I... hear you. We'll be good." He placed a hand on Carter's shoulder, giving it a light squeeze before he went back to browsing the clothes.

"It doesn't have to be tomorrow, either. You can take as much time as you need." Carter picked up a flannel for himself, then a couple of silly sweatshirts in his and Luke's sizes.

He smiled as Robbie squeezed his shoulder, and a little tension drained out of his shoulders. Yeah. Yeah, things would be good eventually. They just had to give it a little time. "And if you need anything while you're here, you just let me know. I'm gonna show you how to get to my house at least, and see if we can get you familiar with some of the other scents."
