Space was cold. General common areas on starships were cold.
But this? This was frigid. And Spock didn’t like it.
Not that this stopped him from bundling up in an attire that was both warm and malleable. He wanted to be certain he still had the flexibility to maneuver quickly should this entire plan go south. He remembered how close he had come to being the main course on one of those creature’s dinner menus the day he arrived. If Diana hadn’t been around with her magic then the displaced people of Dunwich might not ever have realized he was there. Not until it was too late, that is.
Spock met Lieutenant Kirk at MIST and explained his plan. On the outset it was relatively simple.
Step 1: Seek out one of the mist creatures. (Implementing Kirk as bait if necessary.)
Step 2: Use the tricorder to record any energy readings or potential frequencies emitted by the creature.
Step 3: Return safely to MIST.
There were, of course, any number of things that could go wrong in his plan, but that’s why he required Kirk. He needed someone to back him up. Someone to watch his six while he was scanning the creatures. Someone who could pick up the mantle of the tricorder—should tragedy befall Spock—and continue the work. Kirk was the logical choice to join him.
It would also give Spock the opportunity to get to know the Farragut’s soon-to-be first officer a little better. So, he handed off his phaser to his new colleague and they headed on their way.
“You must be dismayed that your arrival here has waylaid you from your new duties on the Farragut,” Spock said as they approached the entrance to Sidewinder Park. It hadn’t been the closest place to begin their search, but Spock knew firsthand that there were creatures out in that region. It was also near to the ghost line perimeter which, based on La’an’s recent theories, seemed relevant to the creatures in some way.
Spock scanned the area with his tricorder as they walked, boots crunching in the hard snow. “It is impressive how quickly you’ve managed to move through the ranks. I presume you intend to make captain as quickly as possible?”
The tricorder whirred and beeped. But so far no sign of any creatures in the dense fog.
He paused when they reached an area where the dense foliage opened to a small clearing in the trees. "This could be a good location for you to attract one of the creature's attention."
