kesi I have struggled with the label of "disability," over the years. I am Deaf, and I proudly own that identity, but it's difficult for me to claim disability in the same way. Historically, the word has so often come with the connotation of being somehow "less than" or not reaching a standard benchmark of existence, and that's not me. I am a whole person. But there's a social movement to encourage the use of the word for positive means, so here we are, on the #internationaldayofdisabledpersons.
And, not that we're voting, but if we needed a Sexiest Deaf Spokesman, we could do a lot worse than @nyledimarco.
"For able-bodied/hearing people, it is important to note that we are not your sob-story. Not an inspiration porn that makes you feel better about your day or life, even. Please try to avoid telling us that weβre brave or an 'inspiration'. We are people. We have personalities. We have rights. And we are here to stay. Be our ally."
