WHO: Finnley Parker
WHEN: October 22, evening.
WHERE: The Parker-Sparks residence.
SUMMARY: Finnley fills out a petition.
WARNINGS: Mom feels.
Papers were strewn across her desk, the end of her pen stuck between her lips as she let her eyes trail over lines written on the formal-looking documents. Shortly after her conversation with Oliver about her desire to officially become an uncontested mother to Jonas, she’d begun looking into all of the things she would have to do in order to make it happen. Not wishing to get ahead of herself, she’d also taken an evening out with Jonas to ask him what he thought about it. Many tears had been shed on both sides, but the overwhelming consensus had been that nothing would make either of them happier. She couldn’t be happy about the fact that Jonas had been abandoned by his birth mother, but she was overjoyed to get to fill that role for him now after he’d gone so long without. Though the wedding was still nearly nine months away, she knew that there wasn’t really a bad time to begin this process. Though it wasn’t nearly as rigorous as adopting outright, it could still take time before the courts would allow the process to be finished. From everything she had read, there was a slim possibility of at least one home visit to be done by a social worker that would either deem her a suitable parent in a proper home environment, or a bad candidate for parenthood. She thought - hoped - that there would be little way for her to mess that up if it came to pass. Mostly...there was paperwork and waiting for it to process through the courts. Even if they didn’t fill it out immediately, if they waited until it was closer to the wedding, Finnley was too anxious to let those forms sit unfilled. So, she started neatly filling out those boxes in her favorite pen. As the ink dried, she couldn’t help but look at that document. A formal request for one Finnley Starling Parker to adopt Jonas Sparks alongside Oliver Jonathan Sparks, in the absence of Jonas’s birth mother after the forfeiture of her parental rights some years prior. There was nothing to contest there, which made this possible at all. There was a clause where Jonas would have to sign off, explicitly stating his agreement to the adoption because he was old enough to have a legal opinion in such a thing. She knew that when she took it to him, that he would be eager to sign. Oliver would, too, on his requisite lines. A background check would be prepared for her, along with a collection of information not unlike a resume. Eventually, it would culminate in a court hearing, and ultimately...Jonas would receive a new birth certificate, even though his name wouldn’t change. It would just list her as his mother, and she couldn’t think of anything better than that. She pulled an empty file to the middle of the desk and gathered her research and filled out forms, neatly organizing and filing them away, the petition right on top. She hadn’t signed or dated it yet, but it was there for when the time came. The lack of officially recognized paperwork didn’t make her less of a mother at this point, she thought, but Finnley never wanted there to be any doubt. Just a year prior, she had been preparing to meet Jonas for the very first time, and in that year, he had changed her irrevocably. Being a mother was now one of her greatest joys, and she owed that to him and his willingness to welcome her into his life. She vowed to be a better mother than hers had ever been. With Oliver to guide her and Jonas watching, she knew that she was right on track. |
