WHO: Diego Rojas + his parents
WHEN: August 6, afternoon
WHERE: Dunhaven + Chicago
SUMMARY/NOTES: Diego calls home to tell his parents about Finn. Italics are in Spanish; I didn't want to have to write it all out lol.
“Mijo, cómo estás? Tu papá y yo --” “Mamá, espera, por favor.” He hated to cut his mother off, but there was a reason he was calling, and as much as he loved hearing his mother’s voice on the other end of the line, he wanted to tell her the news before she launched into a detailed play-by-play of their day. He could hear her inhale sharply, and he murmured an apology immediately. Her younger son wasn’t usually like that; they both knew that. Diego was just a touch impatient, and he knew exactly why. He’d been thinking about family often in the last few weeks, not only inspired by Finn’s request but also by the memories and by the movie. It had been clear to him early on in the reveals that Cassian had spent much time on his own, unlike his own life. Diego had grown up surrounded by family, and by neighbors who were just as close. He’d grown up surrounded by a community full of love, and Cassian’s loneliness stood out in stark contrast. But Cassian had found pieces of that in the end, hadn’t he? It’d taken him longer than it’d taken Diego to find where he belonged, but he’d found that same feeling Diego had every day when he woke up beside Grace, or when he put Hannah to bed. Cassian just hadn’t been given as much time. “There’s something I -- we wanted to tell you.” “You’re having another baby? Oh, what a blessing!” “Mama! No! We’re done having babies.” At least he was pretty sure. They really couldn’t afford it with Finn going to college, not until Grace was done with her own education. "No more babies.” “But don’t you want a son?” Diego couldn’t help it: he laughed. On the other end, his mother sounded offended. “We’ve talked about that. I have everything I need, and I already have a son.” His mother knew how he felt about Finn, how he’d always felt. The lack of paperwork legally defining Diego as Finn’s father had never stopped Diego’s family from welcoming Finn as family before, so he didn’t know why his mother was hung up on that. It was probably some old tradition she was holding onto, he thought. Passing on the family name, passing on the lineage. Diego couldn’t care less about that. “Is Dad around? Put him on speaker.” He waited and listened while his mother fussed at his father, telling him to turn down the volume of whatever he was watching on the television to listen. They might bicker, but Diego knew that no one loved another person as much as his parents loved each other. That was what he’d always wanted: to find someone to love that much. Once his parents were settled, Diego took in a deep breath. “Finn asked me to adopt him.” He had to pull the phone away from his ear to protect himself from his mother’s screech, and then he heard his father’s voice. “You’ve made your mother cry.” DIego laughed again. “Good cry, I hope.” “Of course. We love Finn, you know that.” “Yeah, I do. Me too.” Diego smiled, and let his eyes settle on a photo from his wedding day. His family -- his parents, Grace, Finn, his brother -- all looked back at him with joy on their faces, and Diego felt his heart clench. Cassian never had this chance, so he’d have to hold tightly onto it for him. “Me too.” |
