He annoys the fuck out of me, but I think he likes Corvus. [A pause, press of pen as she considers.] He apologized for the things he said to me, and I told him that it was the most honest he'd been in a year, and that I'd rather have him be an honest dick, than treat me like glass. Then he said he'd behaved like I'd wronged him, and he apologized again, and I told him to go back to being self-sacrificing and not standing up for himself if he wanted to.

The problem is that Jack doesn't usually do honest, and he's so used to being self-sacrificing that he doesn't know how to be anything else. He feels guilty about what he said and the way he said it. I would too. [...] We've never actually talked about it, you know. The things he's said, about being dead inside and going through the motions. If we push, he shuts down, but if we say nothing, everything just goes on like it is. What's the middle ground?

He knows everything about Corvus, kid. There's not much he can do to hurt him. [Another pen press.] He needs to do honest more often. He's ended up where he is by never doing honest. I just don't know how you make him realize that isn't working, not for him, and not for anyone else. Is there middle ground? I don't know if there is with him. He needs someone he doesn't need to pretend around, but it's obviously not you, and it's obviously not me. Who's left?

I'm going to be straight with you. I'm on painkillers every single day, and I'm in a pretty shitty mood, because they never completely take the edge off. I'm worried I'll just make it worse, because my patience for his self-sacrificing is really thin.

I know. What he said in Gotham was the most honest he's been in a while. I could try pushing, maybe. Make him talk to me. He's always on me about being honest, so at the very least he could do the same. [...] I don't know. He and Cerise aren't on the best of terms. If he won't talk to me, he won't talk to Wren. Maybe he needs to stop pretending altogether.
