I'm quite done. I'm not saying another word on it.

Your hold on your temper is astonishing, Mr. Callaghan. Was your childhood home especially violent?

Please don't play psychologist on me. I pay someone else for that.

And no. My childhood home was not violent. Let's chalk it up to bad pain management and a lot of guilt over the past few years.

Unfortunately, no. People suffering from chronic pain have not statistically been convicted with rape.

Perhaps deep-seated resentment as a foreigner in America?

There's always a case that falls outside of statistics.

I've been here less than six months. I think you can discount that explanation.

I am getting help. And I will refrain from letting my anger show itself in the journals or contacting anyone involved again. I offered to find Clare new roommates if she desired, though I would never hurt her. I've never hurt someone before in my life. Never. I couldn't live with myself if I hurt someone again.

Are you implying suicidal thoughts? Statistically likely.

To be perfectly honest with you, yes. I am implying it, and I am feeling that way to some degree at the moment. Not that it would make the situation any better for anyone. It's a selfish thought because it solves nothing.

Technically that is untrue. It would solve the concern and rage of the great number of people you have managed to offend, your own apparent remorse, and any chance of relapse.

[...Oh, right.] But suicide is bad. Terrible waste. Quite.

[...] Everything you just said. That's how you really feel, isn't it? If I simply killed myself, problem solved. The latter was you being 'polite'.

How I really feel? I feel that there are few things you could have done to label yourself such a pariah so efficiently. Rape and mutilation are, in some ways, worse than murder in the eyes of those around you. I am not sympathetic, but I am also not as outraged as the artist, who has a hidden temper to match his thick head.

Frankly, my principle emotion is astonishment that you think further communication with your victim was even possible--and that was before you threatened her again.

I [...] really don't know what to say. I don't have any excuses. I behaved poorly in a situation that was already bad to begin with.

And I don't know why I spoke with her, quite honestly. I thought, perhaps, that I could offer some apology. I've never been in a situation like this before. I don't own a manual to tell me what to do, and I've never known anyone in a similar state. So.

That was not a very good apology. I think, perhaps, it is because you are not sorry. You are sure that the events previous made you into something you are not, that it was out of your control. These are common excuses in criminals, particularly in crimes of passion: I was not myself. Something came over me. I was angry. The victim made me angry. And so on and so forth.

Hmm. Yes. That was an apology.

Self-knowledge will have to be enough. Reparations appear to be impossible, at least on the woman's behalf, but I am sure there is something you may do to appease your conscience. The therapy your lover suggested is no doubt wise.

My conscience wants to be appeased by copious amounts of liquor. My therapist says that's unwise.

And wait. My lover? I've no one like that.

More excuses, Mr. Callaghan.

No? I mispoke. Wrong term. Sexual partner?

I'm well aware of that. Can you fault a bloke for wanting to be a little numb?

I've really no idea who you're talking about. I've no sexual relationship with anyone here.

Yes. Thin, blond hair, 180 cm, male with an occasional preference for women's clothing. Given your experience and his, probably a brief, even cursory meeting, not even a night. I was under the obviously mistaken impression people liked the delusional appellation of lover in this topic of conversation.
