I talked to Evie. I panicked about something when you weren't around, and I called her. She's really not doing okay. [A hint of rustling as she crawls onto the mattress that's still in the attic.] She says Daisy makes her sad, and that she doesn't understand her at all, and that she's a terrible maman. She sounded really, really depressed. She promised to call her doctor, and I asked her to lunch next week. I didn't ask Anais if she was doing something. I didn't even think about contacting her when the baby was born.

Okay, just for tonight I won't think about it. Maybe I won't think about it tomorrow either, if you promise to bring us back a Christmas tree.
